LeoThreads: Introducing ThreadCasts

LeoThreads is going to change how we interact with each other. This is bringing a completely new dimension to the Hive ecosystem. Leofinance is putting forth effort into areas that were overlooked before.

The cool thing about all this is once the tools are in place, people start to figure out innovative ways to use them. With Leofinance, the opportunity to provide feedback to get more integrated into the development is essential.

At this point, we are in the early days so lots of ideas are flowing.

One such idea is #ThreadCasts. This is something, with a bit more development might really turn into something spectacular for the engagement among though on Hive and Leofinance.

ThreadCasts

What is a #ThreadCast? It is simply a #thread that is centered around a particular event.

@jimmy.adames and I toyed around with the first #ThreadCast earlier today. Unfortunately, we did it when he was at work which cut down on his ability to engage. However, we see the results in spite of a few limitations.

Here is what the original first thread looked like.

threadcast.png

Notice the number of threads tied to it. Ultimately, we know these are comments and, hence, we had 135 comments. But this is only part of the story.

Due to the need to keep refreshing to see the other person's comments, things got a bit clunky. So we started another one.

threadcast.png

Think of it this way: a #ThreadCast is a thread tied to the broadcast of anything. People can get together in the thread and discuss the events that are taking place.

This was the idea behind it. I am certain, if both of us were free to engage, during the game, it would have surpassed 350 comments.

Now consider all this could apply to.

Are there other sporting events that people watch live? Certainly, @belemo and all his EPL friends could get into a thread and discuss the events as they happen in real time.

It could apply to television programs. How cool would it have been to have a thread about Game of Thrones when the finale was on?

Some politician on television running his or her yap? Have a #ThreadCast discussing it.

The point is that we can start to think in terms of real time interaction. Effectively, this becomes a real time commenting section.

Some Ideas For Improvement

Khal mentioned that there is going to be another update in the next day or so. This one is going to focus upon the speed of the site and how things load. Perhaps this will solve some of the lag issues we experienced.

One thing that is needed is if comments in the threads could appear as they are made. I noticed that my comments would show up without a refresh and the counter would increase, but his comments only appears when I refreshed the page.

Also, another handy feature would be to reverse the order of the comments. Right now the oldest appears first. Switch that around for threads. Have the newest appear at the top with the older ones being pushed further down.

As you can imagine, if people are using this for real time text engagement, it would be helpful to see the newer stuff first.

The team is obviously aware of the need for filtering options. Since that is already on the list I will not bring it up as a suggestion. However, this concept gets more powerful if we are able to hone in on those subjects we are interested one (or at least the people).

Imagine for the second the potential with real time text AMAs. We simply could have people dropping their questions and the person typing the answers.

The vision behind this is to form a feature similar to what Disques provides. That is a commenting feature that blogs can integrate into their service. It would be really cool to implement something like that into Threads.

And for those @leomarkettalk fans, there was this suggestion by @forexbrokr:

threadcast.png

Maybe it won't be on the shelf for too long.

So what are your thoughts on ThreadCasts? Do you have any ideas to add to this concept?

I would just encourage regulars to only reply to the very first thread.

When they start to nest and you have to click back and forwards, it gets super annoying.

Yes unless you want to answer the person directly then going to their thread is preferred unless you address them in your thread.

Some things to work out. I think reversing the order of the threads after the main would, with newest listed first would really change things.

Personally, I think you should bring back LMT in it's original form just so people can use it to make comments and suggestions about #Threads. Plus, they can use it to ask questions and get answers.

I'm feeling a little lost without it "anchoring" my browsing. We don't necessarily need to add articles and such. It would just be a place people could pop into to see if they can get some questions answered.

Plus, it does have the added benefit of attracting votes...which helps build the LPs.

Food for thought. IT is a centerpiece and an anchoring for people. It probably wouldn't hurt to have it back in place.

Like I said, I don't think you need to spend much time there adding content and such. I just think it would be nice to have a place people could go to connect with the regulars. Plus, it was nice to be able to point newbies that direction so they could start meeting people inside the Leo community.

Just my two-cents.

I'll cast another vote for bringing back LMT. Once you get used to it it's hard to adapt to this new environment.

This is just to say that for #ThreadCast to be really effective, there needs to be a smoothness to how these comments comes through.. there's a lot of possibilities with leothreads I can't help but think, these changes would come in handy. I'm glad threading is better on mobile now.

Threading wasnt even working on mobile from what I understand so that is a non-starter. A function like this needs mobile.

Good thing it is working. The next update is going to address some speed issues. Hopefully that will really help.

I think #ThreadCast would help organize threads better and easier to find some.

I think the value is more as an engagement tool. It is something where people can get together and interact in near real time.

This pulls a lot of the "conversation" from other sources. Also will help to grow the numbers a great deal.

It'll be nice to see LMT back in action. Either in it's old form or #threads.

I was putting up a quick post about our experience with the thread cast today and you were putting this post out. I'm glad you did yours, because it's always going to be much more intricate.

Thanks for allowing me to be a guinea pig. I am stoked about the possibilities.

You get the game on Friday? Perhaps we can do another one with your not distracted by work. I am curious what we can do in a full game with both attentive and how well it would hold up.

Love the ideas here. I saved them for future updates

Would also love to see LMT again. Perhaps it could be used for something like bullet point ideas to spur top-level thread creation by LMT participants?

Maybe tying that into the idea above: you could have a specific time of the day when the markets are talked about in real-time… say at market open in the U.S. and another session at Asian market open

Could be cool!

Yes it is a way for near real time interaction with other members who are also interest in that topic. It is a way to increase engagement.

It would be really nice to see changes applied to Leothreads in other for it to be more easier, entertaining and fun for others to engage on.

What is a #ThreadCast? It is simply a #thread that is centered around a particular event.

I'm glad to learn more about ThreadCast , would like to try it someday. I've posted some random thread which fail to attract more audience and lost. But I will keep trying.
Thanks for the information sir @taskmaster4450le

It is a cracking idea especially for games such as one off football matches. If we could see the texts coming in live then it would be a great thing to engage on.

LeoThreads are like good series that keep you hooked season after season.

Yeah. What would be powerful is if some people started to use this concept, #ThreadCasts, as a gathering point. They made it their default way to engage during certain events.

I think that is a valid way to use threads and it would be interesting to how many people create their conversations. I do agree with your suggestions but I think having a sort feature is fine if people want a different way of looking at things.

That's a great use case for Threads! And can stir a lot of engagement and debates.

So #threadcasts on #leothreads would be similar to live tweeting at the other place? Running commentary on LeoThreads during the course of some event? Or a conversation thread surrounding an event which had already taken place?

AMA, was mentioned earlier, but imagine threadcasts for situations like these as well:

  • Sporting events (regular season, tournaments, championships, exhibitions, etc);
  • Movie releases (think real-time Rotten Tomatoes or MST3K);
  • Television programming (especially first-run airings or debuts);
  • Concert performances;
  • "Where were you when...?" moments;
  • Press conferences (local, regional, international; sports, politics, etc.);
  • News (or "news") as it happens.

If it can include Hive-related events such as podcasts or gaming battles or airdrops, that would work also.

I think the idea of ThreadCasts is very innovative, and may increase engagement in the AMA, but the true innovation would be sharing commentary for live events, possibly even breaking news.

So I can easily use Threadcasts for NBA and NCAA basketball games, like play-by-play, but more focused on my fav teams :D Also, could use Threadcasts for live-updating elections news and the like. Definitely a lot of space for trial and error and seeing what works and what doesn't content-wise.

IF early Twitter is any indication, the majority of content on LeoFinance will be Threads, very soon. Micro-blogging has been en vogue for so long that it's basically the default for most people online now. Gone are the days of super long-form text posts being the dominant medium of information exchange.
