Summer Reflection #42: Out of Costume

The Olympics is coming to an end this weekend, and work is starting on Monday. So I have to put my game face (as well as some pants) on, and head back to the office.

Pants on.

They expect so much of us.

I am kind of looking forward to going back to work and kind of dreading it at the same time. The dread is mostly because I know the work I have waiting for me, and the time I will have to do it. After the time off, it is unlikely I will hit my bonus this quarter, which sucks.

Smile and wave.

But it will be nice to see some of my colleagues again and rebuild a routine of some sort. Having some kind if timetable helps me stay somewhat motivated, as without, I am far more likely to let things slide.

There is no slide this weekend though, as Smallsteps' birthday is coming next week and on Sunday we will have family over to celebrate. Nothing too dramatic, just some cakes and finger food, but of course, the house needs to be cleaned.

Something that got slid.

Smallsteps has specifically asked for no toys this year, as she realizes she has too many. Instead, she wants some books, so we have people buying one out of a series that she enjoys. We got her the first book from another series too, as she has been listening to an audiobook version of it and lovea it, so we figured it will help her be engaged reading it also. She reads quite well, but it is slow. I suspect that by the time she finishes the first book, she will be quite proficient.

And then it is our wedding anniversary next week too.

9 years.

This year, I planned and ordered a gift months ahead. But it isn't going to arrive on time. So I will have to come up with something else instead. I a a bit disappointed, as it just makes it look like I am lame and thoughtless, which is true 99% of the time, but not this time.

Should have planned a contingency gift.

I guess I have to buy a gift card.

I don't know where I heard that a father, when a son asked him for things, responded "that that was going to cost him a number of books read", the method worked for him.

You have a child who has already read more than 100 books.

Good luck with your anniversary plan B.

greetings

She is just turning 8, so there are a few more books out there for her to read still :)

When something like that happens, you know you’re doing a good job as a parent.

I wonder how long it will last for :)

I am kind of looking forward to going back to work and kind of dreading it at the same time.

I'm starting to feel that way myself as well. Actifit slipping, weight increasing, schedule way out of whack. Getting my ass back in the classroom is exactly what I need to snap back to reality.

Sounds like a busy run of weeks with Bday and Anni. Good luck!

weight increasing, schedule way out of whack.

Even with all the dancing?

Well it seems I need to do more dancing! Just a few nights each week isn't gon a cut it. Besides, the real issue is the food I'm eating and not the activity I'm doing.

I hate when school starts and I have to start wearing pants again instead of my preferred cargo shorts I get to wear in the summer. I remember when I started asking for tools instead of toys for Christmas. Best decision ever. I still have and use many of those tools. The toys, not so much!

Tools are a great idea for a present!

I should get my wife a new iron, or a frying pan! ;D

Life is full of moments, some work, others of rejoicing and celebration, and then there are the holidays (cycles open and close).

Little Smallsteps is at that age we call “sponge”, she wants to know everything. You, her parents, are the example she follows, hence the need to identify with you, and what better than to show her interest in reading (family example).

Without these stages, we would be condemned to monotony.

Do you think there should be limits on what answers parents give children's questions?

Parents must respond to all their children's concerns, but those answers must be accurate, clear and without taboos...

Reading is one of the best habits. It's great that your daughter asks for books.

For sure. I hope she really gets into it.

Wow, I don't think I've heard or seen a kid say they don't want more toys; it is usually the opposite. Hearing them say they want more books instead must sound very nice for the parents.

It is pretty cool - family will get her books. Her auntie will take her to a museum :)

Nice. From what I've read of her personality, I bet she loves the museum.

I could recall when I was teacher,I would always stretch forward for holidays. They come and when it's almost over I'll feeling like resigning basically because I know the pile of work ahead of the session.

It's quite interesting that smallsteps loves reading which is quite rare among kids and doing so everyday with guidance will make her both a proficient reader and a prolific writer

How many kids always think that they need more books? Smallsteps isn’t a kid, lol
She’s really smart!!!!
