Grass Roots
I feel like we (perhaps just me) are living in an increasingly strange world that is becoming less hospitable for humans. It is as if we are self-sabotaging our environments that make life worth living and filling it with alternatives that do not fill the void of what was there earlier. It is a bit like walking through a max museum, pretending that the statues are real. Everything we seem to be interested in and find important, appears to be a substitute for something real,
something we used to know.
This is the only place I can bring this up.
Well, there are a couple of friends who I speak to about these things too, but even they don't fully get what I mean by it. In the "real world" some people shrug off what I say, as if I am crazy, as if I am a conspiracy theorist, or somehow unhinged. But I see it in their eyes, I see their brains tick over at the recognition of what I am saying, as they try to push back down and swallow the doubt that has arisen in their throat.
What if he is right?
I hope I am not. Because if I am, the pain and suffering we are experiencing now, is just the beginning. We seem to be going through some kind of renaissance of superstition and belief in a reality that we have imagined, that has no basis in science, nor sense. We have become hyper-focused on the irrelevant, making firm in our minds tenuous connections to reality to feed a desire for recognition and self-importance, based on nothing but what we say we are.
Prove it.
Look at the world where people demand to be called certain words, as if they are Kings and Queens to be bowed down to, just because they have decided that they are worthy, despite having done nothing at all that requires a title. Some go as far as to talk about themselves in plural, as if they are multiple people simultaneously, that they are so great, their person can't be contained in single-form, it has to inhabit more than one individual. Self-absorption.
It.
That is the non-gendered form of a person. We don't need anything else.
It is me.
Done.
Of course, that isn't good enough in this world, is it?
It isn't special enough to encapsulate the brilliance of who we are as humans, even though we haven't done anything brilliant and spend most of our time complaining how everything is everyone else's fault. We have all been oppressed, we have all been victimized, which means it is our right to oppress and victimize others in retaliation. We are entitled to our retribution for those who have trespassed against us, even if the boundaries they crossed were only in our imaginations and assumed.
Assumptions are dangerous.
Yet we assume that we know well enough who we are as an individual to demand others to recognize us as that, despite us not actually behaving in a way that represents what we demand to be recognized for. It is a disconnection of reality, where a person can claim a trait as their own, even though they don't possess it, and cannot do it.
I want to be recognized as someone who can take whatever they want, without any negative repercussions.
Acknowledge me. Treat me accordingly. Nice watch... give it to me.
Do not think that. You aren't allowed. Your thoughts are no longer your own, they are the property of the state legislation, and public opinion. Think only what is approved, or face the wrath of the outspoken minority, who operates outside of legislation, but is approved. If you think differently, you better keep it to yourself. Divergence is punishable.
So says the doctrine of inclusionism.
Everyone is welcome, as long as they accept that we are always right.
It is possible to be both victim and perpetrator simultaneously.
Anything to feel relevant.
Another substitute to fill a hole left by thoughtless destruction. We fought tooth and nail to be individuals and now, we find ourselves lonely, disposable, and forgotten. No one knows who we are, because they do not know our journey. We live a transitory lives, shifting to something we are attracted to, only to find something near immediately disagreeable, a deal-breaker. We can't commit to that disaster due to some irrelevant point. Ick. Once seen, it can't be unseen, like an obsessive compulsive left on an odd number, when they need an even.
Disrupted.
Corrupted.
We used to celebrate the heroes, the outliers who beat the odds, who faced hardship and overcame the worst life had to offer, to become their best. We used to design our gods based on acts of heroism, miracles, behaviors to aspire to, to replicate. We used to talk about good mothers and fathers, upstanding citizens, the best of us. Now, we just want attention, we want to be known as an individual, a self-described hero.
Known for nothing.
Where have our role models gone? Who is there to look up to in a world that is filled with egos, filled with self-importance, filled with self-satisfaction, even if it comes at the expense of others. We claim "self-made" without thanking the fabric of society that enabled us, and all the people who were involved in our success. We thank a god as a signal of our virtue, forgetting the people who did the work to make us possible.
And we know it.
But to acknowledge it is to dismantle the imaginary kingdoms we have built around ourselves, the belief system that says I am entitled to all the good things life has to offer, though I have not invested into building this life at all.
We make our world. We destroy our world.
Yet it takes a lot of skill to be a builder, very little to demolish what is built. It can take generations to develop a sustainable society and a handful of years to tear it down again.
What will be the last thought, of the last person left of humanity?
A job well done?
At least, they will not leave another victim.
We will not leave a void. There will be no substitute needed.

My friend, every species has its time. We have been the kings of the concrete jungle, but remember that no evil lasts 100 years and no body can resist it. It is possible that nature itself will decimate the population and another species in the chain will take over...
I assume this will always be the case. What is interesting with us, is that we destroy ourselves and in the history of species, we might be the shortest lived.
Were our heroes back in the day really any better than the people today? I'd venture to guess many of them had just as many faults. We just didn't see it because not everything was as transparent back then as it is now. On the surface though our moral compass did seem a bit more accurate.
They were flawed too no doubt, but we celebrated their successes, not their victimhood. Now, it is the biggest victim who wins, even if they are not worthy of the prize. I remember when the change was made at schools in Australia where "everyone gets a prize" no matter what they did - the start of the end.
I can't argue with you there. We were definitely made of tougher stuff back in the day. It's a general wussification of the world. Kid's don't even stand in the cold and wait for the bus anymore, their parents let them sit in the car until the bus comes!
I once got
screamed attold off for using it as a personal pronoun FOR MYSELF because it was objectification or something and I HAD to either use singular they (it has existed for a while) or one of the other things that confuses the hell out of my meagre brain or pick a binary.very open minded and inclusive alphabet soup representative that was XD and I only stated it because I was practically ordered to, saying "I don't care, whatever works" wasn't acceptable either, I guess they were so tied to their gneder as a massive part of their identity that they simply couldn't fathom someone who literally does not care at all
I seriously just want to bitchslap people for this, not because it will help in the slightest, but because occasionally I want some of that instant gratification stuff too.
How dare you objectify yourself!!
I will just go take a selfie of me pouting and my ass in the mirror for strangers to look at.
What do you mean you don't care about what I care about?
Bitchslapping should be an approved therapy.
That should explode your likes XD
Your reflection is cosmopolitan. It has no borders, no political system, it is for everyone, it is for today. The world is losing its direction, its values. We worship vanity, the superfluous, the empty. We worship the packaging, the ornaments. We do not care about the essence, about what brought us here. What others did for us to have everything we have, what we are doing for future generations. Nothing matters, only pretending, pretending to seek false recognition. Deceive to get respect. And from so much deceiving and pretending we end up believing that this created reality is the "reality".
It is no wonder there are so many depressed influencers - they have gone out of their way to present themselves as something they are not, only to have to look at themselves in the mirror daily.
Exactly!
I used to think that this gender thing was a first world problem. Since a lot of their needs are usually met, people who lack problems tend to create one for themselves or make a big deal out of one. But slowly, I saw that it has started to spread even to third world countries. Maybe it is because of social media that it has progressed this far. I personally try to avoid interacting with them because it is too much of a hassle. I just don't like how it has affected a lot of the media, and the children as well.
I believe so. Social media spreads so fast and far, because anyone can take part, without having to have any skill.
It is not like something is wrong with you. I just se you as someone who thinks about so many things unlike your friends, lol
Everyone wants to become heroes, yes but a lot of people are not even working towards it. Well, it is still possible to have heroes amongst us in the future
Heroes aren't the people we look to in times of need - they are the ones that step up when someone has to. Very few people these days have what it takes.
I think the same. It seems in 10 or 20 years, we will be having problems for our basic need such as food and water due to the climate change and rising population. We might also witness new pandemics.
And, how do you think the youth of today, will handle it when they are the adults who need to solve the problems.
It is not just you, but even if there seem to be many reasons to despair, we should not.
We should look for people and communities that are working for the better good.
We should resist this temptation and forgive them in our minds. And if we have evil thoughts because of them, we should avoid these people.
There are always reasons to be cautiously optimistic even when it seems that everything is falling apart.
I agree. It is a good reminder though to be attentive and act with intention when building that community.
I am 51% an optimist. There is a chance :)
The closing thoughts about the skill required to build versus the ease of destruction, the fragility of societal structures, and the potential consequences for humanity prompt deep reflection. The idea that acknowledging our role in societal breakdown might require dismantling the imaginary kingdoms we've built around ourselves is a powerful call to self-awareness.
It seems that people are so self-absorbed, they don't recognize the role they are playing, and the impact they are having, whilst they believe they are doing good.
Your words partakes deeply with the sense of disconnection that many of us feel in today's world. It's like you've captured the unspoken doubts that sticks around in the minds of many.
Thank you for sharing such a powerful reflection. It's rare to find someone echoing these sentiments so fluently.
"Disconnected" is probably the word that sums up the current culture the most - despite all the digital connections.
I totally agree.
