Air Quality

Air quality is the measure of how clean or polluted the air is. Air quality has a direct impact on our health as we breath through air. Air quality is at the worst level these days. Three consecutive countries India, Pakistan and Bangladesh are struggling with bad air quality. Air quality index of Lahore,Dehli and Dhaka is at worst stage and these cities are on top of the list.

In past months, Pakistan was dealing with smog. Winter was worsened with bad air quality and smog engulfed the spaces above the heads. Things were not visible and it was causing so many problems.

Politicians were blaming each other. Interestingly, Punjab of India was blaming Punjab of Pakistan for causing smong and, on the other hand, Maryam Nawaz, Chief minister of Punjab, said that airs from Dehli are making us suffer. Beyond this blame game, there were actions of local people that have to be addressed.

It is pertinent to know the reason of smog in Pakistan, India and Bangladesh;

• Crop residue burning
• Traffic
• Industries

I was having sense of anger after seeing burning of crop residue. I wanted to educate people over it. I tried to spread my words. I approached many people around me and they always come up with a lame argument and excuse;

• it's a type of tradition, and we have been burning crop residue for ages.

I wasn't surprised to get this answer from local people because this has became part of their agriculture system. They need to be educated. The government only did one thing and that was making, hanging posters all over the cities and annoucing that they will charge fine if people will burn crop residue. It is not again astonishing to see these acts of government because they always do lip service and don't do any concrete act in many regards.

Moreover, the government imposed every possible force of the agriculture sector instead of focusing on industries. Industries are contributing much more to worse the air quality index. Industries are not being regulated. Industries need proper checks and balances from the government. The government should make rules to install air refineries on every industries plant. Additionally, these industries should be re-located outside of cities.

Some people face allergies due to bad air quality. In the past, it was rare among people to get asthma, but nowadays, every other person has asthma. One of the reasons can be the smog and the harmful dust particles that irritate airways, increase air resistance, and trigger allergic reactions that intensify the symptoms of asthma.
Poor air quality is caused by pollutants such as nitrogen dioxide (NO2), particulate matter(PM), ozone (O3), and volatile organic compounds(VOCs).
The overwhelming amount of vehicles on the roads and the rise of industries have made our air polluted.

Well, these days, I am living in the Capital City of Pakistan, which is amazingly clean with so many plants and trees around. Surprisingly, the air quality of Islamabad is also bad.

Because of excessive plants, trees, and forests in the city, hundreds of people are sneezing and having pollen allergies.

In conclusion, We all should contribute as little as we can do for our climate and environment. This is deteriorating.
