DRAWING AS A FORM OF EXPRESSION
DRAWING AS A FORM OF EXPRESSION
I started drawing when I was no more than a little girl lacking ambition who wanted to let off steam and tell stories. My drawings had no technical purpose; I drew the way my hands interpreted the world, but I was stopped by the obvious obstacle of my limited knowledge; an obstacle that, as one more thing that got in the way of my goals, I decided to overcome as soon as possible.
I studied in a self-taught way the basic concepts of anatomy, shadows and illuminations, shapes and colours; and, with time, I defined my style, my own image; a way of expressing ideas quite dark, gloomy, with an excess of graphite and thick lines, which made me identifiable for anyone who had seen one of my drawings before.
My main inspiration when drawing is human nature, the things that a human being can hide behind an expression, a gesture, a pose.
At the beginning my drawings were flat, without much expression or reason to be; little by little I added meaning to each of my lines, I let my hands guide me as they did before, in my origins, and wonderful portraits of unknown people came out, which I would soon decipher like convoluted codes.
Here is an example of a face at my beginnings and a face in the middle of my progress.
Photo and drawing by me.
I know I still have a long way to go on the road of art. My drawings still have a lot of room for improvement, but I am passionate about them, it makes me happy. It is a way for me to say what I think in a graphic way; magic that comes from my fingers as a part of me.
The materials I have used to make these works are quite scarce. They are based on recycled white cardboard or sheets of paper that I used on both sides, pencils that I used up in a matter of minutes, swabs or toilet paper with which I blurred like an expert, and not much else.
One of the main reasons for my pride is to see how, despite not having great initial resources, I gradually forged my own path in art. Online classes and evenings of constant study began to pay off about two years ago, when, after what seemed like centuries of effort, I was finally able to launch into more daring works.
Drawing is, for me, one of the most precise and beautiful forms of expression that exist. My goal in the world of drawing is to advance until I can handle expression and the human figure with total naturalness, as my ambition is to get closer to a more and more realistic style; and, one day, to be able to call myself a "draughtsman" in the fullest sense of the word.
