The Doorway Effect and Creativity in Digital Age

avatar

The few thoughts below may be mostly relevant to my fellow digital artists, but as always all are welcome!

Ok, so first thing first, what's the Doorway Effect?

The Doorway Effect is a phenomenon of your brain forgetting a certain information after you leave a room. The forgotten information often returns to you as soon as you re-enter the room you were in before. Human brain - a mystery!

Why am I here again?

What it has to do with art and artists?

I catch myself a lot sitting empty headed in my room for hours with no trace of any interesting ideas left inside my skull. Then I change the room and images start to appear in my mind. It often also happen when I go to bed. (It is useful to have something to take notes with near your bed, because as soon as you get up these ideas will usually evaporate from your head as well.

That is one interesting example of your brain and imagination being highly dependent on your surroundings.
It is especially relevant to modern artists in my opinion. We often close ourselves in our rooms for long periods of time, getting stuck in front of the screens, which make our heads much less creative and our inner worlds much less interesting.

That is why I am trying to recover some of my non digital creativity lately. I want to get back to my old habits, do more physical drawing and sculpting. I try to go and sketch outside etc.

Funny observation: People do look at you strange, when you pull out a sketchbook and pencils in public. I guess it's getting rare these days.

To summarize, even though I really appreciate the clear advantages that digital technologies give artists these days I also think there is something important that we may be loosing in the process. I think it is only healthy to let our screens take a break for a while and recover some of what made our artistic adventure interesting in the first place.

Are computer screens slowly sucking life out of you as well? I'd be curious to know your opinion.

And finally a few of my recent sketches, you can check them below.

I used some of them for my recent 3D models, so you may recognize some familiar faces there. It was really fun, there's something in interacting with physical media that no technology can imitate, at least for me.

Have you ever had a reflex to search for an undo button on a piece of paper? I sure did! And felt really silly just after I did that...

That doorway effect seems to happen to me when I'm cleaning house. I'll go to a different room to grab something and forget what it was as soon as I leave the room I'm in. Annoying! Now I know it has a name, haha.

Nice sketches! Nah, you're not the only one who looks for undo on the paper 😏. But it's good to mix it up and get out of our comfort zone now and then. : )

I am definitely not known for my good memory. It happens to me so much it isn't funny anymore.

Thanks, glad you like them! Other thing I saw someone doing is to try and zoom in on a physical photo using two fingers like it's a smartphone. That's a sign that you may need a small detox from your phone :D
