JANE'S BOOK OF TRUTH

"I'd be going shopping later today. I plan to make meat balls for family time tomorrow. For a change," Isabel announced.

"If Jade was here, she'd have shouted out of excitement. That's like her favorite snack of all time. "

Just as soon as Jane said so, she wished she hadn't. The air stiffened as her mum, Isabel, turned to her, saying,"Never call that name again in this house, you hear me?"

"But mum....."she started to say

"Did you not hear your mother? Keep quiet. Now leave here and go up to your room," her dad scolded. Jane was hesitant. He yelled, "Now!" She ran off in the direction of her room, got in, and banged the door.

Isabel now had her head in both her palms, which were resting on her thigh. Ethan, her husband, moved closer to her and rubbed her back gently, then he said, "she's just a little girl. She probably misses her twi.."

His words were cut short when Isabel raised her left palm, signaling for him to just keep quiet. She hissed, got up, and exited the room.

.........................................................

Jade and Jane are twin girls.
Jade was the reserved one, and her love for books drew her closer to her dad. Her sister, on the other hand, was a social butterfly. All about the parties and fun.

Jade was the household sweetheart, lovely and homely. But all that changed when she sold the family's only property and could not account for the money. Her parents were so heartbroken, especially because they intended to loan out the property for an amount enough to cater to Isabel's mother's hospital bill. Unfortunately, by what happened, they could not, and they lost her. In disappointment and anger, they threw her out of the house.

Jade would come by the house each day in the few weeks after that incident. She'd knock at the door, cry, beg, but would be granted no attention or entrance into the house. She stalked her parents, particularly her mum.
All her effort to reconcile with them oroved abortive. Isabel wanted nothing to do with the child. She blamed her for being a wolve in sheep's clothing, for putting up an act for so long and deceiving them.
........................................................

The tension around the house quietened. Still, words were picked.
Months later, Isabel had come in with Jane's clothes, which she had just collected from the line. She took them up to Jane's room, which she met in a mess.
"Typical Jane! When will this child grow up?" she mumbled.

She began to pick up clothes littered around. Realizing that what the whole place needed was a deep clean, she decided to just put the whole place in order and issue a warning to the young lady once she returned from her volleyball practice.

Just when she was rearranging the closet, she found a little boo, beneath the pile of scattered clothes, carefullytucked away. The cover page read "Jane's book of truth." Curious, she invaded her daughter's privacy.

She read a page after the other and marveled at what thoughts her daughter had. She smiled some, shook her head some, and was shocked too.

A few pages down, she read what was the biggest shock of her life. It went,

Dear diary,
I've been able to raise the money for the summer vacation.
And im so relieved but very sad right now. The house is in chaos because Jade confirmed she was the one who sold our only property. Mum and dad are so mad at her that I've never seen them act that way with her.
I feel so bad that she's taking the fall for me, and it makes me wonder what they would do if they found out that it was I, not her, who is responsible. I feel bad that she's going through all this cause I played the blackmail game on her, but she'll be fine. They'll soon forget about it. After all, she's their Jade.

........................................................

She was terrified. What she read must not be true. She fell to the floor, holding her hands to ger mouth, trying to subdue the scream that was coursing through her lungs.

About that time, Jane came in.

"Mum, what are you doing here?" she looked at her mother thoroghly, and her eyes caught sight of her diary in her mum's hands. "And, how did you get that? What are you doing?" she trembled

She made to snatch it, but her mum was faster.

"How can you be so wicked? How can you be this wicked even to your own sister? You stood there and watched me chase your own twin sister out of the house and blamed her for your own wrong, and you said nothing. You had mind enough to stay back in this house living freely and happily like you hadn't broken a part of me," Isabel said in a shaky voice.

"Mum, I can explain.." Jane started to say.

"Just...keep quiet. Shut up!" Isabel thundered. Jane immediately got frightened and took a few steps backward when she noticed in her mother's eyes anger she had never seen before.

"I could have listened to her all this while. I could have given her a listening ear, but I did not. I should have known her well to know she could not do something like that, but I didn't. And you, you let me do what I did. Everything that happened back then was because of you. Because of your friends and a stupid vacation. You made me close my heart towards her and balme her for my mother's death. But she, she could never do same to you. She..." Isabel began to cry feverishly that her whole body shook.
I tried to. We tried to, but you wouldn't listen.

Jane got to her knees and crawled to her mum's side, begging. The woman shook her away, making her fall to her buttocks. She got up and left. Jade began wailing

For days, Isabel was a shadow of her former self.

........................................................

On day, the doorbell rang and behold. When Ethan opened the door, it was Jade in flesh. He screamed in excitement, and his wife, hearing his shout, rushed out. At the sight of her daughter, her knees gave way, and she fell to the ground crying.

Jade came over and enveloped her in a hug. She kept saying, "I'm sorry, I'm sorry, baby. I should have known you couldn't do that. I should have been a better mother to you....I'm sorry."

Just then, she noticed Jane standing putside the door, crrying with two hands clasped in front of her.

Isabel screamed, "Get out of my house. I dont want to ever see you again."

Jane knelt down pleading, and Jade joined in, saying, "we're sorry, ma. She is truly sorry. Please forgive her. I'm here now. We could start all over again, please. I'm sure you don't want to lose your child again. Let's start over."

Ethan came to his wife's side and rubbed at her back and shoulder he said, "Listen to her, she's right. Let's not let this go further. We've all suffered a lot already."
