Splinterlands Economic Simulation Game?
The first PC game that I was immersed in was the original Starcraft. I was so impressed with its gameplay back then where you would have to gather two types of resources, minerals and vespene gas, in order to build your military base. The whole process of acquiring resource-filled territories and properly allocating it was a large part of the game's strategy.
Starcraft was so popular that it became one of the pioneers of the whole real-time strategy (RTS) gaming genre. But I was more into the medieval themed games like Diablo and Diablo II. So when the third installment of Warcraft was released, I was also immediately hooked into it. It's basically the same as Starcraft but with lumber and gold as the primary resources. You would also need to build up your food supply that determines your maximum unit count.
And so with the upcoming release of Splinterland's land 1.5 version, we are told that we would be gathering wood, wheat, and other resources from the lands using the monster cards as workers. I can see the similarities between Warcraft and Splinterlands in this aspect.
But from what I am hearing from the developers during their interviews from various media, I think Splinterlands in the future will lean more towards becoming a full-fledged economic simulation game. I haven't really played a lot of these management games but some of the examples I know of are Theme Park and Theme Hospital.
And there was a game in particular that I imagine will be somewhat similar to what Splinterlands will become. Marketglory was an economic management game back in the early 2000s where players were able to create and own their own businesses and trade in the open market with other players.
So let's say you start with a lumber production company. The wood you produce can be sold off to the market where another industry like a paper company can use it to produce rolls of paper. This paper can then be used by a newspaper company. It was an ambitious project at the time as it predates the whole concept of cryptocurrency and you can earn real cash through bank transactions.
Splinterlands can also introduce similar concepts that go beyond just producing items and spells. We can have different industries that have resources and products that are linked together. There can also be factions and warring regions. The possibilties are endless and it is exciting to think of what can happen in the future.
And despite the whole decentralized finance space that we have now, I can say that Splinterlands is paving the way into a revolutionary new concept. No other blockchain game that I have ever came across has this wide grand vision of a full economic game model that intends to surpass the card game it was originally known for.
And the key to taking part in this upcoming project is of course owning land and being able to provide the necessary requirements to maximize its utility. There's only 150,000 lands that will ever be in existence in the game so owning even just one sets you apart from the rest of the community.
