SPL Tournament Guide

One aspect that is often overlooked by players in Splinterlands is the tournaments. This includes me as I seldom attend them nowadays. But I did had a fair share of my tournament adventures back then and I even won the top spot in a private event. This week's challenge is about guiding new players to tournaments. And while I'm really not an expert when it comes to tournaments, I do have some tips that I want to share based on my experience attending them in the past.

Align Tournaments to your Ranked Play Schedule

I would say this is the most important thing that a new player should consider when joining tournaments. It would be fair to assume that new players do not have a large card collection and rely mostly on rental cards in order to play. The cards that you rent for ranked battles are also the same ones that would be available for tournaments if the rules allow them. It's best to enter tournaments that are held within the duration of your card rentals so you can play both in ranked and tournaments and maximize their utility.

Double Check the Tournament Rules

A common mistake that I made during my first few tournaments was entering those that I don't have the cards for. There are many restrictions that a tournament can have like playing with only gold cards, or only Rebellion cards, or the card level limit is silver. New players should double check the details of the tournament and check whether they have the cards needed. Otherwise, you would just waste your tokens paying the entry fee.

Start with Tournaments with Cheap Entry Fees

I would also suggest for the beginners to start joining the tournaments with the lowest entry fees. Gaining experience is the key and exposing yourself to as many tournaments would familiarize you with how it feels to compete in these settings. Those with larger reward pools might be enticing but they often also have higher entry fees and more competitive players.

Watch Tournament Battles

Finally, it is highly advisable to watch the previous battles of tournaments, especially the high paying ones. You can browse through the list and you can do this even if you are not part of the tournament. Watching high stakes battles and see how the top players strategize can you insights on how to better improve your own skills.
