My Back to Basics Strategy

If there's a rule set that I really truly wish never existed, it would be Back to Basics. This is because it strips down all cards to their basic form and pit them against each other devoid of any advantageous ability. It's like watching a bare-knuckle fist fight in an alley. 😅

But I've also learned to accept that this is part of the game, And the release of the new Rebellion reward cards made my Back to Basics strategy a lot more interesting and I'll share it with you guys here:

First up is the summoner. I always seek Conqueror Jacek whenever Back to Basic comes up. When the battle is basically just a slugfest between who's stronger, having the ability to attack first makes a huge difference and Jacek provides that with speed boost. Another important ability that he gives is the Piercing. This lets you play strong melee and ranged units without having to worry about armor getting in the way of their attacks. The Scattershot is a wild variable as it may or may not benefit you depending on the situation.

For the cards, Halfling Refugee is such a great card for Back to Basics. For just one mana, you get a very competent damage dealer and tank. It is usually deterred by the Weary ability, but since it's wiped away by Back to Basics, you get a powerful card with no drawbacks.

Then we have Kha'Zi Conjurer which is a two-mana ranged unit with six damage points at max level. And while Back to Basics removes all of its innate abilities, the Piercing from Jacek works so well with it. It is also very fast. When combined with Jacek, Kha'Zi Conjurer is likely always the first unit to attack in the match.

Now here's a modern ranked battle where I used this tactic. You can check out the full battle here.

This is a 36 mana battle with Holy Protection and Back to Basics rule sets. The enemy and I both used Halfling Refugee as tank, and he went heavy on magic damage for the rest of the lineup. I also went magic but had two ranged attackers as well in the back.

The battle escalated quickly and thanks to the speed advantage, my units manages to dispatch half of my opponent's monster by round two. And without his abilities, Djinn Oshannus on my opponent's front is just another meatshield ready to take the full force of my attackers.

The battle ended quickly at round four. It was a fast and decisive match thanks to the combination of speed and power.
