Armor Wars: Legionnaire Alvar
Today, I will highlight my favorite Splinterlands card. Legionnaire Alvar is without a doubt one of the coolest looking card in Splinterlands to date. His very composed and menacing glare tells you right away that he is not to be taken lightly.
Alvar's most prominent attribute is the combination of his high armor and the Void Armor ability. His Giant Killer and Demoralize is also very useful when encountering giant tanks on the frontline such as Agor Longtail and Coeurl Lurker.
The downside to this card is its low melee damage and speed. This signifies that his main role in the game is to be a strong tank that will absorb as much damage as possible. The key to this is to pump up his armor to absurd levels since it will soak up all attack types including magic due to the Void Armor.
First off is our summoner. Kelya Frendul is without a doubt the most popular water splinter summoner in the current meta. She is an ideal pick for Alvar because she provides an increase in both armor and speed which are significant attributes for Legionnaire Alvar.
Scavo Hireling's repair ability is a must in order to increase Alvar's survivability. A couple turns of armor repair are sometimes what determines your chance of winning or losing a match. The drawback to this monster is it is very fragile and is often the first target of Opporunity or Sniper skilled enemies.
River Hellondale is one of the best card combination for Legionnaire Alvar. The resurrect ability practically doubles the amount of damage that Alvar can absorb since it restores the entire starting armor. It's like having two copies of Legionnaire Alvars in a single match. It also starts to provide an additional melee attack when it reaches level two which is definitely another plus.
Venari Wavesmith is a versatile card that offers a combination of a defensive buff and a decent magic attack. Its Protect ability increases the entire lineup's armor by 2. This can help withstand the initial barrage of enemy attacks as well as boosting Alvar's maximum armor rating which is a definite advantage especially when he is resurrected by River Hellondale.
For this sample ranked match, the setting is in silver league with a 36-mana Equalizer rule set.
My lineup relies solely on Legionnaire Alvar for the tank role which is supported by Scalvo Hireling's Repair and River Hellondale's Resurrect. He also gets a speed and armor buff from Kelya and 2 points of melee damage buff from Demented Shark and River. My offensive units are Pelacor Bandit and Uraeus. Both have the Sneak ability which I hope will quickly get rid of the enemy's backline starting with Dhampir Stalker.
The opponent fronts Cursed Windeku with Thorns which I am confident that Alvar can withstand since he also has high health thanks to the Equalizer rule. He then goes heavy with the combination of magic damage dealing monsters with Life Leech ability on the back.
After the dust settled on the first round, Dhampir Stalker is taken out. Legionnaire Alvar withstood all the damage the opponent's monsters threw at him. Another advantage of Void Armor is that magic wielding Life Leech monsters were not given a life bonus because they hit the armor instead of directly at Alvar's health points.
During round two, Cursed Windeku finally falls and the opponent is left without a solid tank. Alvar once again soaks up the brunt of damages and has been revived by River Hellondale.
At the start of round three, the enemy is finally left with four magic attack monsters and I still have a complete lineup.
After two more rounds, Alvar finally falls but not before leaving the enemy with just two remaining units. I still have four backline monsters at full health including the two with Sneak. Victory is imminent at this point of the game.
Battle concludes at round eight with one casualty on my side, Legionnaire Alvar. This match is a good example to shows how good of a tank Alvar is, especially with the right support strategy. Looking forward to more battles with this amazing card. 😁

Void armor is indeed very useful against magic attackers. The thicker the armor the better. Couple this with the repair and resurrect ability and you will have a very hard primary tank. 😊

Love this setup! The increase in melee dmg from Shark and Hellondale also made a huge difference. Thank God for the equalizer ruleset since it buff up those supporting cast as well, otherwise they would usually be taken out pretty quickly. (though for this battle the opponent lineup only focuses on the tanker) Would like to own a copy of Level 3 Legionnaire (with demoralize), that will be a top top card to have! :)
