The Angry Old Ghost.

After seeing a two-hours movie about ghosts during the period meant for a GNS class that the lecturer didn’t show up for, Anastasia and I had a conversation about the possibility of ghosts reappearing on earth, reincarnations, and all, and I believed all those are fallacy. What we watch in movies is basically just fiction and it’s not possible that it happens. In the movie, there was a young man who got assassinated and he couldn’t rest in heaven, so he reincarnated and got revenge on all his assailants.

I wish that could happen for real, I said to Anastasia. It’s possible though, she responded.

After about thirty minutes of argument, and proper dissecting of the realistic possibilities, we parted ways.

The next day in class, Anastasia’s face was all bruised. What happened to your face? I asked. Ah! It was ghost ooo, she responded.

Ghost? Did you have a dream? Or was it because of our discussion yesterday? I asked again. I had so many other questions to ask, but I remember that she had always told me about the weird sounds she heard every night for about 30-45 minutes, but she didn’t pay attention to the fact that the sound could be from the broken grave of the household grandpa that was buried right outside the house which happened to be her window side.

So, instead of further asking too many questions at a time, I simply asked how it happened. Then, she relayed the story…

Every night at around 6:30pm-9:30pm at their place of residence, Anastasia and her neighbors would gather to talk about their day, politics, drama, taboos, religion, and any other topic they could think of. On this particular Thursday night, they talked about the belief that ‘ghosts take a break from heaven on Thursdays to check on their loved ones’. It was the usual loud arguments and laughter moment for them when the sound started.

Anastasia recognized the sound because she’s been hearing it for the past three weeks, but she was confused because it wasn’t 10:00 pm yet. That’s when it used to start. While she was thinking, she got chills, and felt her head double in size like some strange creatures were around. She could neither move nor talk. Thinking she was the only one, she saw all her neighbours suddenly quiet and as if they were struggling to move too. Suddenly, one of them screamed…

Look! The atmosphere had changed. The air suddenly went cold, blowing heavily creating a foggy sand-stormed environment. Everyone looked to the direction where the neighbour pointed at and the only present structure visible was the broken grave of the grandpa buried twenty years ago. The ghost had stood up from his grave and like the zombie that we watch in movies, he walked towards their direction while making the scary sound that Anastasia was familiar with.

After a minute of confusion, everyone dispersed running in different directions. None of them remember to run inside the house because it was a battle between a spirit and the living. They had zero security guarantee against this creature, so they ran into different houses that were still opened in the street.

While running, many of them fell and sustained injuries and she was not exempted. She couldn’t look back to know exactly where he disappeared to or if he was still after them.

By morning, Anastasia and her neighbours called the Landlord and the agent that rented the apartment to them and narrated what happened. By afternoon, they got a lot of visitors in white, they were traditional worshippers who had come to perform some rituals in the house after being rightly guided by an oracle.

The oracle instructed all residents to evacuate the house because the ghost was angry that he had been abandoned for years and his grave was not looking well cared for at all. Also, they mentioned that there’s a ritual they were supposed to perform every year to appease the ghost because when he was alive, he used to perform the ritual. What was the ritual? The details was exclusive to the members of the cult he was a member of when he was alive, but the only information available to the public was it would last 7 days in a chosen month dictated by the oracle annually.

Without hesitation, Anastasia moved out of the house to a friend’s place. Two weeks later she received a call that the ritual was a success and that the house was back in shape so she could return to the house since her rent wasn’t due yet.

She asked if the grave was still outside, and they responded yes because he was buried there on his request when he was alive.

She said “okay”, ended the call and blocked the numbers.

After about a month of squatting with her friend, she finally got a new place and moved in, but not without making sure there was no grave anywhere close to the house.

hello @storygoddess is this a true story? I doesn't feel real and does not appear to be written for any of The Ink Well prompts. I think many would find it difficult to believe that a dead person rose from his grave as a zombie and walked towards your friend to scare her. Very interesting if she claims that this is what happened! It is challenging to write a completely developed story in under 750 words, and in this piece we see just that. We know nothing about the ghost's background, or about the rituals that supposedly need to be followed. There is no indication as to how the owners of the house know what to do to solve the issue. Your story also ends quite abruptly and with no explanation. To secure higher curation support, you will need to spend a little more time developing your ideas and editing your work to catch simple spelling errors and grammar mistakes. Your dialogue is also missing speech marks.

We ask all writers to support at least two other stories in The Ink Well for each one that they share themselves. This means you should be commenting meaningfully on two stories each time you write in The Ink Well.

I wanted to argue the authenticity of the story too, but the bruises on her face made me believe without much questioning.

it is not an entry to any prompt in the community, it is just a story that I think the community would like. I have made an entry for the community's creative nonfiction earlier this week.

I appreciate the corrections, and I have effected them in the write-up, more like re-written. Thank you so much once again. @theinkwell
