YouTube as a library / YouTube come una biblioteca [ENG/ITA]

I recently started to re-evaluate YouTube. For years I never watched or followed him. I have always found him very inefficient in finding information. To get an answer to a question, I had to watch a video of maybe 20-40 minutes and then find out that it didn't answer the question I was asking myself.

Much of the content offered doesn't interest me, but I started by chance to watch some videos of finance, then savings, then pensions and slowly I realised that the information, looking well, is there.

There was another element that made me rediscover YouTube and that is that the vast majority of videos do not need to be viewed. Just listen.

So, while I'm pedalling to and from work, while I'm shopping, while I'm walking

On lunch break, I can listen to the videos as if they were a podcast. Of course, every now and then I have to take a look, if some passage requires it, but very rarely.

The introduction by YouTube of some particular features, then, I appreciated them a lot.

Listen to them because maybe my headphones are dead.

Another are the timestamps that allow, if the creator does, to divide the video into segments by topic. This is very useful in long videos where they talk about many different things, allowing you to save time and listen only to the interested party.

The only feature I would love but I have to pay to have it, is to be able to listen to a video even when the app is closed and the phone is locked. At the moment, when I want to listen to a video I have to keep the screen active and every now and then, if I keep it in my pocket, it freezes.

Recentemente ho iniziato a rivalutare YouTube. Per anni non lo ho mai guardato o seguito. L’ho sempre trovato molto inefficiente nel reperire le informazioni. Per ottenere una risposta a una domanda, mi toccava vedere un video di magari 20-40 minuti per poi scoprire che non rispondeva alla domanda che mi stavo ponendo.

Molti dei contenuti offerti non mi interessano, ma ho iniziato per caso a guardare qualche video di finanza, poi di risparmio, poi di pensioni e piano piano mi sono reso conto che le informazioni, a cercare bene, ci sono.

C’è stato un altro elemento che mi ha fatto riscoprire YouTube e cioè che la stra grande maggioranza dei video non necessita di essere visto. Basta ascoltare.

Così, mentre pedalo da e per lavoro, mentre faccio la spesa, mentre cammino
in pausa pranzo, posso ascoltare i video come se fossero un podcast. Certo, ogni tanto devo dare una occhiata, se qualche passaggio lo richiede, ma molto di rado.

L’introduzione da parte di YouTube di alcune feature particolari, poi, le ho apprezzate parecchio.

Uno di questi sono i sottotitoli automatici. Questo mi permette di comprendere meglio dei video in altre lingue, ma
anche vederne quando non posso
ascoltarli perché magari ho gli auricolari scarichi.

Un’altro sono i timestamp che permettono, se il creator lo fa, di dividere il video in segmenti per argomento. Questo è molto utile in video lunghi dove parlano di tante cose diverse, permettendo di risparmiare tempo e ascoltare solo la parte interessata.

L’unica feature che adorerei ma devo pagare per averla, è quello di poter ascoltare un video anche quando la app è chiusa e il telefono bloccato. Al momento, quando voglio ascoltare un video devo tenere lo schermo attivo e ogni tanto, se lo tengo in tasca, si blocca.
