The City and the Struggles - My Monomad Challenge entry

avatar
Big news incoming. Drum rolls, I quit my job. Yup. I will be telling you guys of that story later, but why I mentioned that is because, one of the things I intend on focusing on more now is street photography. I have always wanted to tell stories of people, the struggles, the hustle, everything. There is no better place to do it than the city of Lagos, Nigeria. Well, there are actually. My city is unsafe, rough, and every single adjective you could think of that is not great. Me pointing a camera at people or things in certain places could land me in serious trouble. Still, I'm unperturbed. I am actually, but I have a plan. One that cuts the risk down a thousand folds. Fear not guys, I will not be risking my life for photography, albeit it's a very difficult decision, lol. I was taking some pictures of my sister for her birthday a few days ago (photos coming in soon), then I saw this lads pushing Thier wheelbarrows, selling yams. It did melt my heart. It was the perfect opportunity for me to take a photo.

I was taking pictures of my sister in this sloppy hill then I looked back and thought, Wow, click.

This one was some random kiosk that has been abandoned for a while.

I've seen the spectacular works of @coloneljethro and I can only try to emulate such masterpiece. And so begins, the storytelling.

Hope you liked it.

Wowawowawow! You're making a life change I see. Great shots! Love it that you're going with something that speaks to you. A taste of freedom, although it won't be easy. Can't wait to hear more.

Awww you quit on your job but surely you are into a more interesting perspective and I am amazed again with your photography. What a great entry for the monomad challenge. I love how you captured the photos in the streets behind the scene.

I hope you are having a great time. Keep safe always my friend.

I like these pictures a lot! The city looks so quiet in black and white, and it seems to be a little bit of dust in the air, which also offers a sense of rareness in a good way.

I guess. Interesting that you would mention that. I never even took note of it.

Thank you, so much for your comment and support. Much appreciated

Hell yeah dude! I did the same thing back in 2017, and although there's been plenty of ups and downs since, that is one decision I do not regret in the least. Just don't ask me how to make money off street photography, I still haven't figured that one out myself. If you find yourself with a spare hour and a half sometime, might I suggest checking out the documentary Everybody Street? It's about street photographers in New York City and is what got me interested in street photography in the first place (I'd originally intended to do nature/landscape stuff). There's one person in it that talks about the 'volatile proximity' of NYC being one of the things that makes it such a great place for street photographers, with the size and population of Lagos I suspect you have more of that near at hand than anywhere I've ever been.

I'd tell you to be safe out there but that's something that's not entirely within our control, so just be smart out there my friend.

Also, those are some lovely shots!

Ah, this is one of those type of comments you screenshotz frame and hang in the wall or print out and look at whenever there is lack of motivation or something.

Thank you Colonel.
I just saw the first 5 minutes of the documentary and I'm thinking how have I not seen this earlier, lol.

Thank you.
I can't wait to get out there and shoot.
I will try to keep safe and a low profile. My country is not the nicest. They loathe what they don't understand.

PS, just so you know, this is all you sir 😊

The pleasure's mine sir. I stumbled upon that documentary entirely by accident, had went to do a fashion shoot for a friend of a friend and they showed me the first half of it. Took me years before I was able to track it down and watch the second half but it didn't matter, I was hooked already.

My country is not the nicest. They loathe what they don't understand.

That's not just your country, think it is some sort of deep seated human tendency. We have much the same issue here.

I also enjoy the works of @coloneljethro and it is great to see someone making these about Lagos. It would be splendid to see more works, so by all means post a great many more, bro.
