Why I am worth more
Why I am worth more
Hello everyone, today another post about the contest of the Hive Learners community. Last week I mixed up my article for the second entry with the article for the third entry. Not that much of an issue, as I really enjoyed writing my article. So all good there! This week the theme is about equal pay. I'll try to give my reasoning about equal pay and afterwards I'll give some examples behind my reasoning. Feel free to give arguments against my reasoning as that's how I can become a better version of myself! Enjoy reading!
Why I don't support equal pay
As the title already suggests, I prefer to not have equal pay. BUT before I get people shouting at the window of my room, I want to nuance it. I DO support equal pay in terms of gender, sexuality, disabilities, etc.! I don't support equal pay for 2 persons of the same age, with the same experience, same title but of which 1 person is doing an effort to improve and work as good as he can while the other one is doing the bare minimum without helping others etc.
I heard stories of different friends with plenty of examples. There are people who are just abusing the system in which they work. If someone is doing the bare minimum in terms of its contractual hours or maybe not even doing these, than I think it's not fair that that person is paid the same as someone who is really collegial and trying to help others. It's not only about the hours someone work, but also about plenty of other aspects of work. By the way, I don't want people to overwork for hours, just them doing their 'normal' work.
Another aspect is helping out others. I heard stories of someone who was always asking for help in terms of being too busy. So my friend helped her out as he wanted to be a good colleague. It happened several times. When my friend talked about it with other colleagues, he heard that they were helping her a lot as well. BUT when someone asked that one person for help, she never wanted to help my friend or another colleague out. In my eyes, you're not a good colleague as you're just parasiting on your colleagues while earning the same wage at the end of the month.
Allergic to unfairness
Personnaly I hate unfairness. In my eyes it's unfair that someone is just leeching the system. Ofcourse do I know that such persons exist everywhere and that sooner or later, they will be exposed. But it's not that nice that it's told to the manager by several employees and it's kind of tolerated for whatever reasons. Or atleast it appears to being tolerated.
I hope this post wasn't too much of a complaining post as I really become angry when I hear those stories of my friends.
Feel free to give counterarguments in the comments as I am glad to enlarge my vision about this topic!
I also don't support equal pay because everyone should receive the amount of salary what they deserve based on how much they worked and based on their ability. I think if everyone receives equal payment then, it will be injustice to many people.
I definitely agree!
O.O But the world isn't fair~ People use their power connections and money. Some are lucky and get born into a rich family as some get born into a dirt poor family. Unfortunately equality is only an illusion. In a sense we have this feeling it's fair but that's how they want us to see it.
That being said if everything was equal it would be a mess. What would be the meaning of seniority and experience and capabilities how can someone be paid the same as a newbie that probably doesn't have the knowledge and efficiency.
I'm agreeing with you btw just adding on to what you said :)
Thanks for adding your insights! I agree that the world is unfair.
I think it could be an interesting topic to describe how someone would make it more fair. As by just giving everyone the same wage, it won't work but what could be a good solution? I have no complete answer ready neither..
O.O because it's not possible. everyone has different views. what might seem fair to me might not necessarily mean its fair for another person. There will always be a party that is unhappy in certain situations. Rarely ever everybody wins like how nothing is truly free, somebody is paying the cost.
I guess you hit the nail on the head! I agree with you!
I do not advocate for equal pay as well for a simple reason: I believe that compensation should be determined by an individual's merit and performance rather than solely based on factors like gender or other characteristics.
In my view, a merit-based system encourages productivity, innovation, and fair competition in the workplace, ultimately benefiting both employees and employers alike 👍
I completely agree with you! I think that a merit system should be encouraging people as well to be more productive, innovative, etc!
Yeah, just like in any situation, it's important to compensate individuals in a way that aligns with their unique strengths and what they can contribute to the situation ✌️
Completely true!
Catch you again in some other post!
You have a great week ahead 😊
When it under the context of the same profession or organization, I totally agree with your position. But in the case of comparison of different professions like medical personnel getting paid more than teacher at the same level, I prefer equal pay in this regard.
Not sure what you mean with 'by the same level'? If it means that a teacher should earn the same wage as a medical professional with the same age, I disagree.
Teachers have different advantages, like having 3months of holidays/year, although at fixed moments, whereas medical professionals hace way less holidays. So should a medical professional be compensated in a different way? I would say yes.
A doctor has to study for over 7years where I live and even more if ypu want to be a specialist in a certain field, so it's kind of logical that he needs to get something back out of this. Should their wages be as high as they are? I don't think so though.
In general I would let a free market do its thing but with some exceptions..
Anyway, I guess it's a very difficult topic where probably isn't a 100% good solution for everyone since what is equality is kind of subjective..
