The castle of Avio is located in the municipality of Avio, in the lower Vallagarina, in the province of Trento (Northern Italy).

This castle is a fascinating circuit of towers and crenellated walls. The castle is a fortress complex designed for the strategic control of the Adige valley. It has not been easy for historians to understand when the first stones were laid. The first historical sources reveal that a fortress was built in the Avio area in 1053, with the name Castellum Ava. So the first part of this castle was built almost 1000 years ago.

Questo castello è un affascinante circuito di torri e mura merlate. Il castello è un complesso fortilizio concepito per il controllo strategico della valle dell’Adige. Non è stato semplice per gli storici capire quando furono posate le prime pietre. Le prime fonti storiche rivelano che fu eretta una fortezza nella zona di Avio nel 1053, con il nome Castellum Ava. Quindi la prima parte di questo castello fu costruito quasi 1000 anni fa.

The castle was built in a scenic area of ​​exceptional beauty. It certainly attracts the attention of passers-by or those traveling by car towards Trento (Italy) during the day. In the evening the castle is illuminated and the scenographic impact of the illuminated Castle is a breathtaking spectacle.

Il castello fu costruito in una zona panoramica di eccezionale bellezza. Sicuramente di giorno attira l’attenzione dei passanti o di chi viaggia in macchina verso Trento (Italia). Di sera il castello è illuminato e l’impatto scenografico del Castello illuminato è uno spettacolo che toglie il fiato.

The current owner is the FAI, which manages it and takes care of its maintenance. The castle was donated in 1977 by Countess Emanuela of Castelbarco to the FAI.
The FAI is the Italian Environment Fund, this is a foundation that operates thanks to the support of private citizens, companies and institutions for the protection of Italy's historical heritage.
Over the centuries, the castle has passed through various owners, from the Venetians to the Emperor of Austria and other noble families of Vallagarina.

Il proprietario attuale è il FAI, che lo gestisce e ne cura la manutenzione. Il castello è stato donato nel 1977 dalla contessa Emanuela di Castelbarco al FAI.
Il FAI è il Fondo per l'Ambiente Italiano, questa è una fondazione che opera grazie al sostegno di privati cittadini, aziende e istituzioni per la salvaguardia del patrimonio storico italiano.
Nel corso dei secoli, il castello è passato attraverso vari proprietari, dai Veneziani all’imperatore d’Austria e ad altre famiglie nobili della Vallagarina.

The castle consists of three walls and there are 5 towers. To enter, you pass through a door-tower crowned with dovetailed battlements.

Il castello è costituito da tre cinte murarie e sono presenti 5 torri. Per entrare si attraverserà una porta-torre coronata da merli a coda di rondine.

This castle was also mentioned in some television documentaries broadcast in Italy. Inside the walls there is a sort of small town with streets delimited by walls, terraces and covered passages. The keep dates back to the 11th century and nearby there are: the House of the Guards, the Chapel, the Baronial Palace and the House of Love.
Around the walls there are paths for wonderful walks amidst an exceptional mountain panorama.
Note: the keep is a tower in medieval castles, it was the tallest tower than all the others.

Questo castello è stato raccontato anche in alcuni documentari televisivi andati in onda in italia. Dentro le mura c’è una sorta di piccolo paese con le vie delimitate da muri, terrazzamenti, passaggi coperti. Il mastio risale all'XI secolo e lì vicino ci sono: la Casa delle Guardie, la Cappella, il Palazzo Baronale e la Casa d'Amore.
Attorno alle mura ci sono sentieri per stupende passeggiate in mezzo ad un panorama montuoso eccezionale.
Nota: il mastio è una torre nei castelli medievali, era la torre più alta di tutte le altre.

This castle is also known for the suggestive panorama that opens up before visitors. The area is surrounded by vineyards and the castle enjoys an enviable view of the Lagarina Valley and the Adige. The Adige is the second longest Italian river after the Po.

Questo castello è conosciuto anche per il suggestivo panorama che si apre di fronte ai visitatori. La zona è circondata da vigneti ed il castello gode di un'invidiabile vista sulla Val Lagarina e sull'Adige. L’Adige è il secondo fiume italiano più lungo dopo il Po.

From an architectural point of view, the structure of the manor combines the style of the typical medieval fortresses of Northern Italy with the finishes of the residences derived from the Scala family. The Scaligeri were a dynasty that ruled the city of Verona from 1262 to 1387.

Dal punto di vista architettonico, la struttura del maniero unisce lo stile delle tipiche fortezze medievali del Nord Italia con le rifiniture delle residenze di derivazione scaligera. Gli scaligeri furono una dinastia che governò sulla città di Verona dal 1262 al 1387.

To get to this castle by car, you need to take the A22 Brennero motorway, exit at the Ala-Avio toll booth, between Verona and Trento, then follow the signs that will take you to Avio.

Per arrivare in auto fino a questo castello, bisogna percorrere l’Autostrada del Brennero A22, uscire al casello di Ala-Avio, tra Verona e Trento, poi seguire poi le indicazioni che vi porteranno ad Avio.

-Conclusions-
This castle located in northern Italy is a bit like a fairytale castle. Anyone passing through Trentino could make a nice stop in this castle which among other things is located right near the communication routes.

Questo castello situato nel nord Italia è un po’ come un castello delle favole. Chiunque passi dal Trentino potrebbe fare una bella sosta in questo castello che tra le altre cose si trova proprio vicino alle vie di comunicazione.
