Sunday's Visit To Platamon Castle

Sunday is always the perfect day to escape from the everyday routine and explore new places. Therefore, I decided to visit one of the greatest landmarks near my city this Sunday. It had been many years since my last visit, and I couldn't recall how it looked. Moreover, it is located by the sea, so the equation "Sunday + beach + seafood = a perfect day" made it an ideal destination.

The Platamon Castle
The Platamon Castle , an important part of the history of Pieria, is a Crusader castle (built between 1204 and 1222) in northern Greece (Macedonia) and is located southeast of Mount Olympus, in a strategic position which controls the exit of the Tempe valley, through which passes the main road connecting Macedonia with Thessaly and southern Greece. The tower (donjon), which overlooks the highway, is an imposing medieval fortress.

The road to the castle was great, mostly made of stone, and there were also some pathways leading up to the castle gates. The road was surrounded by trees and flowers, which made the whole experience even better. It was very refreshing and peaceful at the same time.

After walking halfway, this was the view I had.

As I mentioned before, the castle is situated in front of the sea, offering a spectacular view of the town of Platamon and the gulf. When I arrived at the gates of the castle, I was informed that it was closed for visitors due to maintenance work. However, I managed to take two pictures of the inside and the gates

Since the castle was closed for visitors, I decided to take a walk in the nearby town of Platamon, which is situated close to the sea. Being a tourist and fishermen town, it's always bustling with activity during the summer months, but even in the spring, one can enjoy a leisurely stroll and relish some delicious and fresh seafood at one of the local taverns.

After some wondering around the harbor we sat at a local tavern and as you can imagine it was a great feast!

The castle is still looking great. I like the color combination that the little plants sticking on the walls of the castle bring. The walk with the trees and plants on the sides is beautiful and indeed refreshing :)

Grilled octopus wow. The dish with the fish and potatoes must've tasted really good. So did you share the meal with anyone or did you eat it alone? How much did it cost?
