Improving my homes energy efficiency.

Yesterday was an extremely tiring day. To give you some context, let's start from the beginning.

Almost every year, a government program takes place wherein individuals can submit a petition along with certain documents related to their home, such as an energy-efficient certificate, tax papers, and building permits. After completing the entire bureaucratic process, the Ministry of Energy reviews the application. If everything is satisfactory and meets the criteria, the applicant receives funding to make necessary improvements to their energy efficiency, such as adding a thermal facade, changing frames and doors, and other similar measures, allowing them to improve their energy efficiency by three points.

Back in 2021, I completed all the bureaucracy, paid around 2000€ to make some corrections to my permit and application process, but was ultimately rejected 😂. However, when the energy crisis hit, the government provided funding to anyone who had submitted an application, and I was fortunate enough to receive funding!

However, bureaucracy in Greece moves very slowly, and so I am starting the construction process now, two years later. Nevertheless, I am grateful for the funding, which covers up to 70% of the total cost.

Yesterday marked the first step in my plan to improve my energy efficiency and save both money and energy by changing my windows and frames. Changing my windows and frames.

That’s my old windows and frames.

Well it’s not that easy to get the old ones out while trying to do the minimum amount of damage because no one wants to create big holes.

That’s how it looks after they got them out.

Now the installation was different than you might expect because we first installed the insulation material and installed the frames on top of it in order to avoid thermal bridges because I used aluminium doors.

And the installation begun.

In the beginning I thought they would need 2 days to finish but the guys hammered it in 1 day. The are awesome.

Nice work and great upgrade! Bureaucracy is a pain in the neck here too. Nothing gets done for a long time.

Yeap there are time that bureaucracy is good but most of the times it's really bad and slow

Irrespective of the bureaucratic process, it must really be satisfying to finally get the funding you need. 70% is a really good deal. The installation looked really much of a big deal. I'm surprised it was finished in one day.

Yes it's a really good deal and that's the only reason that makes it worth the wait of the bureaucratic machine to work

My parents are currently doing something similar. They just got solar and have made many changes to reduce their energy usage. One thing on their list they haven’t been able to do yet is get new windows and doors.

My consultant said it will reduce my energy consumption to half. And if I install a heat pump with solar panels then my heating will be free 😂
