And here’s the kicker: according to the Boston Consulting Group, the average size of data centers is constantly growing. By 2030, many of these facilities will exceed 500 megawatts, with some reaching an astounding 3-5 gigawatts.

What does all this tell us? That energy demand is about to hit record levels in the coming years.

So, what about renewables? Aren’t they enough

Well, while renewable energy sources like solar and wind do provide a significant share of the needed power, they simply can’t meet the colossal demands of data centers. The reason? They’re unreliable. The sun doesn’t always shine, and the wind doesn’t always blow with consistent intensity.

This makes renewables insufficient for delivering the 24/7 energy that data centers require.

So, we need another energy source, right? Right! This is where natural gas steps in as the solution. It’s reliable, quickly deployable, and capable of meeting large-scale energy demands.

The company seems to recognize the growing demand and is adjusting its strategy accordingly. In January 2024, Exxon will begin natural gas drilling off the coast of Cyprus. After two years of intensive research, the company is ready to explore significant reserves.

This investment isn’t just about a new energy source—it’s a strategic move. The natural gas produced could meet Europe’s energy needs and support the increasing demands of data centers worldwide.
