Adultery As A Crime

Here's a revised version of your text:

I recently read a post about adultery and how it was once a criminal offense to commit adultery and cheat on your wife or husband. While this seems strange to us in 2024, there was a time in places like Greece and many other parts of the world when being an adulterer, especially as a woman, could lead to severe consequences. If caught cheating, a woman could be lynched on the spot, dragged naked, beaten to death, or even stoned by a crowd. Indeed, there was a time when Europeans behaved similarly to people in the Middle East. While people in the Middle East and Muslim countries might seem 50 years behind in terms of civil rights and personal freedoms, these things take time to develop. We can't just raise our hands and condemn them when, not so long ago, we were doing similar things. Of course, cheating is wrong because it hurts the other person, but every man and woman has the right to make their own choices in life.

Now, let's move on to some interesting historical facts. If you were Greek around 1965 and were caught cheating on your wife, the situation could get quite surreal. Your wife would likely hire a private investigator with a camera, which was uncommon and typically only owned by professionals. They had to catch you in the act, take pictures, and gather witnesses. Then, you would be taken to jail, often naked except for a blanket, and spend at least one night in a police station cell. After that, you could face a court trial and possibly be sentenced to up to a year in prison. Doesn't that sound a bit surreal?

This law was abolished in 1980 in Greece but when did other European counties abolished it?

France
The criminal prosecution of adultery was abolished in 1975 as part of a broader reform of family law.

Germany
Adultery ceased to be a criminal offense in West Germany in 1969, with the reform of the Penal Code.

Lol, almost all done in the 20th century. Ah corruption of the soul at it's finest. Still only one or two countries left now without divorce law. And then adultery is not even a crime in Europe anymore. 😂

It does seem to be the case that Nordic countries have a history of being more progressive :)) You go, Norway--1902!

In the U.S. it is a patchwork of laws. Our Puritan legacy endures. 16 states consider adultery to be a crime. One state, Illinois, has a possible penalty of up to a year in jail. These laws are on the books but usually not enforced. Source: https://hellodivorce.com/relationships/is-adultery-a-crime
