HOW FEAR AND FAILURE IS A GREAT SOURCE OF MOTIVATION || WHAT DRIVES YOU?

In life, it is important for a man to have a source or reason why he does what he does. This reason can serve as a source of motivation, a reason to push during the hard times and never give up.

I was asked the same question, what is my source of motivation? And this time, I knew the answer right in my head and I replied FEAR and FAILURE. Those are my source of motivation.

Now you may be thinking why fear and failure? The truth is most of us in this world are driven by these two things and at the same time, are discouraged by exactly these two things. Let me leave a simple scenario.

untitled.gif

I can say many people lose motivation because they fear what is ahead, and what do they fear exactly? They fear failure. At the same time, some people derive motivation when they face these fears. It is at this point you see them placing double their efforts.

While I was still in high school, I feared failing an exam I was supposed to write to get admitted to the university. The reason was people around me failed the exam very often and re-wrote that same exam. I feared that the same thing would happen to me even though I was doing well in my grades in high school.

The fear of failure drove me to study harder, to do whatever I had not to fail the exams. And you know what, I ended up passing the exams in flying colors.

Asides from exams, in real life I am driven every day by fear. Now you would be thinking what failure is ahead this time? This time I fear living a life of struggle, a life of chronic poverty, a life where which is not what I have dreamt of. This is why most times, when I am lazy, de-motivated, my imagination goes to how my future would be like and I imagine it being very worse and far away from my dream.

That fear of having my future not exactly what I want drives me, gives me the strength to stand up to trace my plans and directions towards my goals. One thing about a goal is that it cannot become reality if you don't dream a future with it.

I believe that you must have been driven by fear in one way or the other to do more, what was it and how did the outcome turn like? What are your thoughts about fear and failure being a great source of motivation. I would appreciate your comments by curating them. thank you!

I have had a similar experience, maybe even the same.

Unlike you, I did not have good grades in high school; they were usually average or below. It was until the penultimate class, when we were to take mock exams that would determine if we were ready to prepare for the exams in the final year (which was to happen a year later).

I thought to myself, "if you do not pass this mock exams, you will have to repeat this year." And that would have implied losing respect from my immediate juniors and placing me as their mate.

I geared up and began to study harder. And that was the turning point in my academic life. I began to take studying as a lifestyle and, in turn, began doing excellently.

The time for the final year exams came, and I did better than most of my colleagues.

Exactly, I am glad you can relate to what I meant. The fear of something brings one to work harder. Fear is indeed a great motivational tool.

You are indeed lucky to have made that exam if not it would have really made you loose your value in the eyes of your younger ones.

Exactly!

You get the whole idea.
So, yes, fear can be a very strong element for motivation.

As in ehn, the way fear motivates someone is really... I don't even know how to put it 😂.

But it can be the other way around too.

It can break one.

This made me remember when I first gained admission into the Uni, those who have gone through this particular course were discouraging many of us, saying this course, no one passes it because the questions are so difficult.

At first, I was afraid of failing too but later, I snapped out of my negativity and started studying I had the mentality that “no lecturer would dare set questions not in the course for us... It's impossible. Even if worse, he changed the questions to confuse us. ”

I was determined to pass and not fail and that helped me to put in more effort in reading so hard and I passed it.

I was just reading a book where it says it is normal for a being to fear things but it becomes a problem if you allow it to overcome and control your life.

Yes, to some, fear drives them by working so hard to have the best in the future, while to some, they would allow the fear to stop them from progressing because they are of the mindset that “after all, I would fail, I don't want to waste my time on it” and when you see these type of people, they are the ones who gives unnecessary excuses about their failures which could have motivated them if they know what they want actually.

You are lucky to have your fear of failure push you to succeed no matter what. It's so sad some people could not overcome their fears, their fears overcamed them.

Exactly! There are those who wouldn't try defining their goals and that is what makes life interesting, you know? Everyone wouldn't be the same na! We see things happening and we'd wondered how it ended up for someone bad and the other person good.

Yeah that's true, I can relate well with that type of situation.

No wonder all our fingers are not equal after all 😂.

Hmm.. true words from that book you read. We should not be controlled by our fears but be encouraged to face them.

Omo some lecturers are wicked oh.. I would not say more than that.

“no lecturer would dare set questions not in the course for us... It's impossible. Even if worse, he changed the questions to confuse us. ”

Exactly!
This has always been my mentality for the "impossible" courses throughout my years in school and I aced them all. Fear of failing can be a very strong motivator o, forget.

Solid word from that book.

While I was in secondary school, I also face same thing, seeing student who is ahead of my class failing makes me think it a very difficult thing to pass, the more fear I get the more I put in more effort in my study because I never wanted to fail, the fear of failure made me put in more effort, so I won't be a victim of it.

It's really funny how we that are not good at our studies just keep trying to move to the next class but I've come to understand that it was all because of our fears of failing.

Yeah, if we love something so much, no matter how strong the fear is, we would put more effort into it.

Fear of failure is a great source of motivation👌. Anyone that has a set goal will sometimes entertain some fear of not actualizing that dream and of course, the fear will push him into doubling his hustle.

I remember doing a marketing job one time in my life. All of us, the marketers were placed on a 6 months probation with salary as well. The MD gave us a particular target on the numberr of sales that will qualify one from continuing the job after the 6 months probation elapses.

Hmmm, I wasn't good at marketing then but I needed the money. Oops, five months passed, and didn't make any reasonable sale....oh boy😃😃, I thought of losing that job and going back home to stay with my mum doing nothing, no one told me to double my hustle, I was afraid of losing that job, I was afraid of not reaching my set goal, I was afraid of going back to the financial crisis and lots more. All these fears pushed me to hustle more and in the end, I achieved more than the set goal from the MD just within the space of one month left!

For me at the level of trying to secure a job, the fear at that time makes us to do almost anything to secure that job. I'm so happy you could secure the job in end 😃.

Well true, the fear of losing could sometime push you to doing better. It works for me as well, sometimes when I think about what is at stake if I don't do well, I sit up

0

That is true, it pushes most people but surprisingly not all. Some people don't motivate themselves and it makes them fail even when they are scared of failing.

When you have something to lose, you are motivated to hold on to it because you can stand to lose it. Hence you drive motivation from your fears.

The way fear and failure motivates us is solely dependent on the individual, Left for me I'd say I'm my motivation because I'm the one that will decide whether to give up because of the fear of failing or to rise above that fear.

I was not a bright student in school, I've never for once in my life came first in anything sadly. But I'm good at so many other things outside studies so you know what I did, I started building on my strength.

My weakness is reading but now I do that with ease and fun, but I wished it happened earlier. All the exams I've written, I always came out with a pass mark and people make fun of me, no in my presence though but I know I'm better than many in many other ways so I just don't feel bad anymore.

Fireboy in one of his songs said, there are so many legends and he is just trying to be another one and I think that applies to me too. I can't be the best but I'm going to be part of the best.

Yeah the esteem of the individual matters and how much they want what's at stake.

Not doing well in school doesn't mean one is not bright. Everyone is bright in their unique areas.

This post resonates with every single time I had to write an exam, do a presentation at work or attend an official meeting. Failure was never an option, even now, as I prepare for a major exam, I know that I cannot afford to fail. So, I am motivated every single time.

I love how most of your posts are relatable. Well done my friend❤.

For me , fear and failure do not stand alone or side by side, they are a phrase or maybe a complete sentence that strongly motivates me....the fear of failure. Now the failure can be poverty, lack of promotion, inability to pass my exams, inability to be there for my family, inability to be the a role model I've always desired to be etc. The point is, I do not want to fail at anything and this creates a fear in me that strongly motivates me to work hard, study hard, give my best, live right and make right decisions at all times..

Exactly, when you know what is at stake, you try your best to always show up. You derive motivation.

I think that having Dreams and Hope are what drives me. But fear is definitely a big motivator. I have always feared failure but sometimes failure is not a bad thing especially If you needed to go in a different direction.
Working through fear brings clarity I think because otherwise you can get stuck.
I have succumbed to fear many times in my life and it makes my view of the world negative while leaving me feeling there is no solution.
Always push through fear.
Thanks for the great post.

Having an optimum level of fear is important in our lives. It allows us to take actions about the elements and circumstances we are afraid of. However, if this fear exceeds a particular limit, it hampers our ability to move forward. And I think, not every kind of fear works the same way. For instance, if I have fear of being rejected by a loved one over some matter it would become very difficult for me to discuss the matter with him.

Yeah you are right. Not everything that is good which does not have a bad Side. For instance, sugar is sweet but too much of it is bad for the body. The same goes for Fear.

People are usually afraid from failures little did they know that it is the reason why we learn and how we can avoid the future errors in our life.

Good luck on the direction that you are taking!
