Fueling Savings: LPG as the Best Financial Alternative for Generators
How cheap is it running on Gas?
This has been the question that has been running through my mind since the increase of fuel prices from #193/liter to 600/litre.
I have been having issues thinking straight anytime I go out to buy 5 litters of fuel, spend #3000 naira, which is approximately $3.5, and yet my generator would not up to 10 hours straight. At the end, I would end up spending over #12,000 naira in a week on fuel which is more than half the amount of money I earn in a week. It is crazy, mehn. I know, I am a poor man...
And here comes the use of LPG as a source of power for my generator....
hmm... HOLD! I guess you don't know what LPG means.
Hell no! I am not gonna tell you! Go google it yourself.
Let me just be a gentleman that I am and continue with my story, LPG has proven to be a much more cheaper alternative to using petrol for your generator. I mean, 1kg can last up to 4-5 hours if you are using a 2.5-3.5 kVA generator.
And how much do they sell 1kg gas?
Just 600naira, which is about $0.7 dollars...
What does this mean?
This means that running my generator on a standard 12.5kg gas would only cost me #7500 naira (which is $8.8), and I would be able to run my generator for an approximate time of 50–60 hours.
Now let's calculate how much #3000 naira of gas would give me and how many hours my generator would run. For #600 naira = 1kg gas = 4 hours run time, therefore #3000 naira will equal = 5kg gas = 20 Hours run time.
That's crazy... I know what is on your mind?
Your mind would probably be saying, Dish this! Solar is a way better alternative....
The truth is, yeah, you are right. Solar is better but way more expensive to acquire, which I cannot afford. I have thought of getting solar generators, but I would need to have a budget of at least $400 to get a 600W power station, which is quite a lot. That is like 20x my earnings and way above my budget, but yeah, when looking at the long run, it is way cheaper.
If I really want to do this, it would take a massive power down of my account which is a No way option for me! I have made way too much power downs this year for survival.
So for poor People like me gas is the cheaper alternative for power.
But the problem is that installing the whole kit for my generator to run on gas would cost me about $70... Which is whole lot 🥺. but looking at the profit in the long run, it is also worth it.
I have made some plans to get the LPG caburator and the 12.5 KG gas. When it arrives, I will write another blog on it once the order has been delivered.

I was expecting the price of the Gas converter and $70 isn't too bad judging by he much you will save in the future.
If many of us this coming, the gas converter was cheaper back then. I don't have plans for that since electricity is steady for now and I hope I didn't need that later.
I have a 12.5kg cylinder and it would only remain the converter... Hope the stuff arrives soon.
Enjoy the rest of your day...
The $70 covers the cylinder and the gas converter together. If you already have 12.5kg then you would not spend up to that amount.

The use of LPG as a source of power for generators is a welcome idea for many people. Just two weeks ago, it was advertised in my church and many people keyed into it. This is a way to survive this terrible increase in the fuel price
I do not have a spare cylinder to use for this but my husband is considering the lpG seriously as we do not have steady nepa light and buying fuel that much is only meant for the wealthy men nowadays .
I hope you get yours and blog about it
I have gotten a new cylinder and the gas caburator. I have also installed it to my generator. When I get home, I would make use of it and see how it lasts.
Really? This is interesting 😍
Please install and come and give us a review
My husband must read the post oo 😂, so he will be motivated to get ours 😍
I remembered you told me about trying to convert your genereator to gas powered. The calculations you did already showed how much it would save you. The cost is not too much but the situation of the country now ehn😅.
The benefit of having a gas powered generator is so much greater than the cost.
This is actually what some people were saying in a bus three days ago but some are scared..lol
