PANTERA

Theme:WALK.
Disc:Vulgar Display Of Power.
Year:1992.

Sonorous brutality taken to a new level. That Pantera made metal reach heights of hardness, intensity and forcefulness never before reached is no secret, but that after them many tried to jump on the bandwagon is no secret either. That's precisely what “Walk” talks about, about those who joined the fashion of being “heavy” to look modern and be trendy, something that for people like them, who had sucked rock n' roll from the cradle and were fanatics to the core of hard and metal, was unacceptable.

“Walk” has the characteristic stamp of the Texan band, a crushing and demolishing riff by “Dimebag” Darrell, a tremendous rhythmic base with the beast of the drums Vinnie Paul destroying all the conceptions of what it means to “hit hard” and Phil Anselmo spitting all his rage with his roars and taking the edge off every scream from his throat. If we add to that an almost military chorus of those that make you raise your fist like a spring, we have a real electric bomb.

The birth of “Walk” took place in a purely spontaneous way on stage. It was the tour of “Cowboys From Hell” the album that had put them in the music scene, and Pantera were rising like the foam. Their next album was supposed to propel them to the top, so during the soundcheck, Phil turned to his bandmates in his usual sympathetically threatening tone and said: “We have to write some shit for the new album”.

Said and done, the reaction of Darrel's Washburn was not long in coming, and out of his amp came the explosive opening riff, to which his brother answered with his monumental rolls. Pantera were recording video material to be edited, so the warm-up was recorded to be able to remember it for the album. A true zenith of modern metal.

Thanks for reading and see you in a future post with more of these editions of our favorite bands and their most legendary songs.
