Mr. Big's is by all accounts, and although its protagonists find it hard to recognize, the case of a supergroup. A band assembled with the “creme de la creme” of the respective basic instruments of a rock group, true geniuses in their field such as Billy Sheenan, perhaps the most versatile bass player in rock, Paul Gilbert, a guitar hero in every sense of the word, Erick Martin, a vocalist with a marvelous technique, and Pat Torpey, a spectacular drummer. The all-star reunion, however, and as one might have thought at first and would have been feasible if these great musicians had wished, was not an exercise in virtuosity to showcase the musical excellence of each one of them.

Mr. Big concentrated on the songs, and they were a great rock band in the studio and live without too many frills or boring demonstrations of technique, but of true talent. In “Lean Into It”, their most inspired work, Mr. Big produced a tremendous collection of songs among which I highlight this exceptional ballad, “To Be With You”, a romantic “mainstream” composition by Eric Martin that was a clear number one in the charts.

In its apparent simplicity of semi-acoustic mid-tempo there was condensed an impeccable instrumental execution that played to enhance Martin's affectionate melodies and those almost Beatlelian chapel choruses. As always happens in these cases, they were soon labeled as sappy and commercial, and despite the hard rock packaging of many of their other pieces, they had to carry the sambenito until their separation. One of the high points of melodic rock.
