With “More Than Words” Extreme reached the Glory and acted as a cupid for millions of hearts in love all over the world. A heartfelt acoustic ballad that took them to the top of the charts and made them stars. Composed by vocalist Gary Cherone and guitarist Nuno Bettencourt, the song moved in an acoustic delicacy only seasoned with the guitar and vocals of its protagonists, who appeared together in the simple music video, with black and white images that put their dose of love charge at the beginning of the new decade of the 90s.

Sitting on a stool in the best “unplugged” tradition, Bettencourt and Cherone made their faces famous worldwide, leaving aside Paul Geary and Pat Badger, the other two members of the band. And the fact is that “More Than Words”, as has happened in many other cases of groups that reach the top with a slow song, overshadowed the band's magnificent repertoire, full of great pieces of funky hard rock, even more so when their next single and new chart hit, “Hole Hearted”, was a piece in the same vein as its predecessor.

And although over time it has been crucified as a sappy and sentimental song, the truth is that “More Than Words” contained a very appropriate message for its time that diverged from the generational jadedness of grunge, the search for affection and real affection in the context of an album, “Pornograffitti”, whose songs all revolved around the concept of finding love in a decadent and corrupt society.

Unfortunately, Extreme will always be remembered for this simple tune on typical “love song” compilations and on radio stations that turn their backs on rock but systematically use their heartfelt ballads, subtracting, as in this case, their meaning and content by squeezing them through constant programming until the public loathes them. Imagine how much income the song must still generate for its creators today, but in that case it is always good to resort to another famous phrase from their pens...get the funk out!
