#33 History Of Rock Music: INCUBUS: LET THE DAMSELS TREMBLE.
They have been something like the eternal band of promise that when they have finally managed to wake up, they have renounced the sound that had placed them in the starting lineup of future stars. The Californians have always been considered the direct descendants of Faith No More, and many of the vocal lines of their frontman Brandon Boyd resemble those of the more melodic Patton. But hey, they were a product of fusion and experimentation back in the 90's, and they were in the second division waiting to make the leap.
Han sido algo asi como la eterna banda promesa que cuando ha logrado finalmente despbia renunciado al sonido que les había colocado en la salida de parrilla de futuras estrellas. A los californianos siempre se les ha considerado como los descendientes directos de Faith No More, y muchas de las líneas vocales de su frontman Brandon Boyd se asemejan a las del Patton mas melódico. Pero bueno, ellos eran producto nacido de la fusión y experimentación ya en los 90, y sen en la segunda división esperando dar el salto.
Their first LP, “Fungus Amungus”, (soon to be re-released for the joy of their fans), dates from 1995, and was released by the band's own label, although it was soon rescued by Epic due to the success the guys seemed to be reaping. In those first grooves the pillars on which the combo's sound would be based were already established, metal, funky, hip-hop with scratches included and some Latin rhythms that gave rise to a kind of bastard cross between Red Hot Chili Peppers and Primus.
Su primer Lp, “Fungus Amungus”, (en breve será reeditado para gozo de sus incondicionales), data de 1995, y fue publicado por el propio sello de la banda, aunque no tardo en ser rescatado por Epic ante el éxito que los chicos parecían estar cosechando. En esos primeros surcos ya se asentaban los pilares sobre los que se iba a sustentarma sonora del combo, metal, funky, hip-hop con scratches incluidos y algún ritmo latino que daban lugar a una especie de cruce bastardo entre Red Hot Chili Peppers y Primus.
Really the serious announcements came with the EP “Enjoy Incubus”, and especially with “S. C. I. E. E. N. C. E.”, an acclaimed work that propitiated their growth and recognition as a band. That “science” consisted of an incredible mix of styles that was very well received by the public and critics. The album takes them to warm up from the bench of the stars, it is the necessary energetic injection to record “Make Yourself”, their definitive passport to fame. In spite of everything those who had discovered them in their first works can't avoid to feel something disappointed, the sound of the group is less and less metallic and more calm, of more intimate airs and suspiciously with the success lists in the point of view, although they still maintain the type this cd that would manage to sell two million copies, figures that continue increasing due to their recent commercial explosion.
Realmente los avisos serios llegaron con el EP “Enjoy Incubus”, y especialmente con “S. C. I. E. N. C. E.” obra aclamada que propicia su crecimiento y reconocimiento como banda. Esa “ciencia” consistía en una increíble mezcolanza de estilos que fue muy bien recibida por publico y critica. El álbum les saca a calentar del banquillo de las estrellas, es la inyección energética necesaria para grabar “Make Yourself”, su definitivo pasaporte a la fama. Pese a todo los que les habían descubierto en su primeros trabajos no pueden evitar sentirse algo decepcionados, el sonido del grupo es cada vez menos metalico y mas sosegado, de aires mas intimistas y sospechosamente con las listas de éxito en el punto de mira, aunque todavía mantienen el tipo este cd que llegaría a vender dos millones de copias, cifras que siguen aumentando debido a su reciente explosión comercial.
The sonorous appeasement, the cultivation of careful melodies and the exploitation of the attractiveness of their vocalist lead them to conquer Mtv with “Wish You Were Here”, the first single of their latest album, “Morning View”, where they definitively embark on the sonic relaxation and the rock pause, transforming the unhinged fusion of “S. C. I. E. E. N. C. E.” into a slight curiosity for oriental music. As always happens in these cases one can appeal to the evolution or analyze that if their previous and more attractive proposals did not collect enough money... it was “logical” to change airs. Incubo” is now a group for all audiences to whom the metal label is starting to be too small (or too big, depending on how you look at it), but since they are finally really famous, let's not spoil the party... until when will they deserve our respect?
El apaciguamiento sonoro, el cultivo de cuidadas melódicas y la explotación del atractivo de su vocalista les llevan a conquistar la Mtv con “Wish You Were Here”, el primer single de su ultimo redondo, “Morning View”, donde ya se embarcan definitivamente en el relax sónico y la pausa rockera, transformándose la desquiciada fusión de “S. C. I. E. N. C. E.” en una leve curiosidad por la música oriental. Como siempre ocurre en estos casos se puede apelar a la evolución o analizar que si su anterior y mas atractivas propuestas no recaudaba lo suficiente… era “lógico” cambiar de aires. El “incubo” es ahora un grupo para todos los públicos al que la etiqueta metal comienza a quedársele pequeña (o grande, según se mire), pero ya que por fin son famosos de verdad no les aguemos la fiesta… ¿hasta cuando se merecerán nuestro respeto?
