#17 History Of Rock Music: SLIPKNOT: WHEN THE EXTREME GENERATES PASTURE.
One of the biggest sensations in metal today, who hasn't heard of Slipknot by now? An extreme band that has managed to sneak into the highest positions in the charts halfway around the world. And although now their very special proposal is seen as a commercial incentive, few people would have dared to predict such an overwhelming success for the band from Des Moines, no matter how much impact their image causes, because very few cases like theirs have been seen. Perhaps only Pantera could match them in the sense that such a highly corrosive sound has managed to have a commercial impact, but even Phil Anselmo and his guys sometimes lag behind in terms of levels of brutality compared to these guys, so few precedents can be found for Slipknot's success.
Una de las mayores sensaciones del metal actual. ¿Quién no ha oído hablar a estas alturas de Slipknot? Una banda extrema donde las haya que ha conseguido colarse en las posiciones mas altas de las listas de ventas de medio mundo. Y aunque ahora su especialísima propuesta se vea como un incentivo comercial, poca gente se habría atrevido a pronosticar un éxito tan abrumador para los de Des Moines por mucho impacto que cause su imagen, pues muy pocos casos como el suyo se han visto. Tal vez solo Pantera podrían equiparárseles en el sentido de que un sonido tan altamente corrosivo haya logrado tener repercusión comercial, pero incluso Phil Anselmo y los suyos se quedan a veces atrás en lo que a niveles de brutalidad se refiere frente a estos tipos, asi que pocos precedentes se pueden encontrar al éxito de Slipknot.
As you all know, the band is made up of nine members, dressed in coveralls and hiding behind monstrous masks that hide their personality and give them a terrifying and shocking character. The fact that they do not reveal their true faces increases even more the interest and morbidness generated by the band, and so, little by little, adding virtues, they have established themselves as the most absolutely devastating group, both musically and in terms of popularity, of the current metal scene.
Como todos sabréis, la banda la componen nueve miembros enfundados en monos de trabajo y parapetados tras monstruosas mascaras que esconden su personalidad y les dan un carácter terrorífico e impactante. El que no revelen sus verdaderos rostros aumenta aun mas el interés y el morbo que genera la banda, y así, poco a poco, sumando virtudes, se han consolidado como el grupo mas absolutamente devastador, tanto en lo musical como a niveles de popularidad, de la actualidad metálica.
Although they try to fit into the metal trend and coincide with it in some aspects - it is not necessary to deny that the success of the style has helped them a lot, paving the way for their music to be consequently accepted - they carry with them the harshness and psychotic undertones of death. The guys from Des Moines debuted in 1997 with a work called “Make, Feed, Kill, Repeat”, which went totally unnoticed and today is a coveted collector's item.
Aunque se les trate de encajar en la corriente un metalera y coinciden con esta en algunos aspectos –no conviene negar que el éxito del estilo les ha ayudado bastante, allanando el terreno para que su música fuera consiguientemente aceptada- portan consigo la dureza y el trasfondo psicótico del death. Los chicos de Des Moines debutaron en el 97 con un trabajo llamado “Make, Feed, Kill, Repeat”, que paso totalmente desapercibido y que hoy en dia es una cotizada pieza de coleccionista.
In their coordinates we could already glimpse a world of pain, unlimited violence, blood, death and apocalypse, and in their faces the aforementioned masks, which they also wore in their unclassifiable live shows, thanks to which they managed to make a name for themselves in the underground metal scene of the United States. Their disturbed personality, supposedly reflected in their masks (glups...) caught the attention of Roadrunner, the company with more success in recent years when it comes to finding extreme heavy metal talents. With them, and already with the numbers assigned to each one of the members, they record a homonymous work that supposes their presentation in society.
En sus coordenadas ya se vislumbraba un mundo de dolor, violencia sin limites, sangre, muerte y apocalipsis, y en sus rostros las citadas mascaras, que también lucian en sus inclasificables directos, gracias a los que consiguieron hacerse un nombre en la escena metalica underground de los States. Su perturbada personalidad, supuestamente reflejada en sus caretas (glups…) llamo la atención de Roadrunner, la compañía con mas acierto de los últimos años a la hora de encontrar talentos de heavy extremo. Con ellos, y ya con los números adjudicados a cada uno de los miembros, graban a fuego un homónimo trabajo que supone su presentación en sociedad.
Sick lyrics and rotten passages of guitar aggressiveness and wild uncontrollable adrenaline made up an album that would become a worldwide best seller, surprising both friends and strangers. Their dark and macabre videoclips conquered the Mtv, their “faces” covered the covers of the magazines, they were present at the Ozzfest and became the last “big thing” of contemporary metal. Teenagers all over the world are tortured by their tunes, with single anthems like “Wait And Bleed” and “Spit It Out”, and surrender to their darkness, compulsively buying their albums and flocking to their shows.
Enfermizas letras y podridos pasajes de agresividad guitarrera y salvaje adrenalina incontrolable conformaron un plástico que se convertiría en un superventas mundial, sorprendiendo a propios y extraños. Sus oscuros y macabros videoclips conquistan la Mtv, sus “rostros” copan las portadas de las revistas, se cuelan en el Ozzfest y se convierten en la ultima “big thing” del metal contemporáneo. Los adolescentes de medio mundo se torturan con sus tonadas, con himnos en forma de single como “Wait And Bleed” y “Spit It Out”, y se entregan a su oscuridad, comprando compulsiva-mente sus redondos y acudiendo en masas a sus shows.
Already consecrated, and aware that the show must go on, they transform their facial personalities, changing their masks, and replacing the red overalls for a black clothing more in line with their philosophy. They release “Iowa”, another revolutionary commercial bombshell in which they delve even deeper into the most devastating thrash. “Left Behind”, the single, annihilates their competitors on television music channels all over the planet. The album definitively consecrates them, and manages to reach the n°1 in the most important markets, reaching the top of the charts in USA, England, France, Japan and Germany. Even in Spain, which usually takes longer than usual to realize the potential of the bands that hit abroad, we soon surpassed the 25,000 copies that flew out of the stores.
Consagrados ya, y conscientes de que el espectáculo debe continuar, transforman sus personalidades faciales, cambiando sus mascaras, y sustituyendo los rojos monos por una vestimenta negra mas acorde con su filosofía. Gestan “Iowa”, otro revolucionario bombazo comercial en el que ahondan aun mas en la tralla mas devastadora. “Left Behind”, el single, aniquila a sus competidores en las cadenas musicales de televisión de todo el planeta. El disco les consagra definitivamente, y consigue alcanzar al n°1 en los mas importantes mercados, llegando a lo mas alto de los charts en USA, Inglaterra, Francia, Japon y Alemania. Incluso en España, que solemos tardar mas de lo normal en percatarnos del potencial de las bandas que pegan fuera, sobrepasamos muy pronto las 25.000 copias que volaron de las tiendas.
Each one of their steps is now followed with an unusual interest, and the Slipknot machinery continues to exploit a product that while the euphoria lasts assures them to continue being the strangest but at the same time powerful specimen of the new metal. The band is now on hiatus due to the parallel musical activities of several of its members, but they will surely be back very soon.
Cada uno de sus pasos se siguen ahora con un interés inusitado, y la maquinaria de Slipknot sigue explotando un producto que mientras dure la euforia les asegura el seguir siendo el espécimen mas extraño pero a la vez poderoso del nuevo metal. El grupo se encuentra ahora de parón obligado por las actividades musicales paralelas de varios de sus miembros, pero seguro que muy pronto volverán con fuerza.
