RUPERTA | One Galapago & Various Photos

Greetings hivers, with all due respect I present my first publication in Visual Shots, a special community for photography lovers. I tell you that I had already seen for some time some publications here, especially the friend @dimascastillo90 with his outstanding photographic works but I did not dare to present any of mine because the truth is that I think there is a lot of talent in this community and I'm just a humble amateur of the photos. However I came across some special photos that I edited in the picasa photo editor to present them in a monochromatic style. It's about some pictures of a tortoise that lives in my family's house in Venezuela and I remember that I was excited about the idea of doing a kind of photo shoot to this tough girl named Ruperta.

Saludos hivers, con todo respeto presento mi primera publicación en Visual Shots, una comunidad especial para los amantes de la fotografía. Les cuento que ya había visto desde hace un tiempo algunas publicaciones por aquí, especialmente del amigo @dimascastillo90 con sus destacados trabajos fotográficos pero no me atrevía a presentar alguno mío porque la verdad creo que hay mucho talento en esta comunidad y yo solo un humilde aficionado de las fotos. Sin embargo me encontré con unas fotos especiales que edité en el editor de fotos picasa para presentarlas en un estilo monocromático. Se trata de unas fotografías de un galápago que vive en casa de mi familia en Venezuela y recuerdo que me entusiasmó la idea de hacerle una especie de sesión de fotos a esta chica dura llamada Ruperta.

Our protagonist is the only tortoise in a pen where there are mainly morrocoys, in fact she lives among nine morrocoys and is not always happy, perhaps because there are no other tortoises of her species. I even think the best way to describe her is as a grumpy animal. But she is the one who came to the pen when she was rescued by an aunt a few years later when the morrocoys were already there, so she has had to adapt, not such an easy task but she has done her best to get along with her roommates.

Nuestra protagonista es el único galápago en un corral donde hay principalmente morrocoyes, de hecho ella vive entre nueve morrocoyes y no siempre se siente feliz, quizás por no haber otras tortugas de su especie. Incluso creo que la mejor forma de describirla es como un animal malhumorado. Pero ella es quien llegó al corral al ser rescatada por una tía unos años después cuando los morrocoyes ya estaban, así que le ha tocado adaptarse, una tarea no tan fácil pero ella ha hecho su mejor esfuerzo por congeniar con sus compañeros de cuarto.

You can see her with her shell muddy, this is because they all trample each other mercilessly and don't think she is a victim, remember I told you she has a bad mood.

Se le puede ver con su caparazón enlodado, esto es porque entre todos se pisotean sin piedad y no crean que ella es una víctima recuerden que les dije que tiene mal humor.

Her head is like a snake's, so between her temper and her looks, Ruperta is to be respected. You can see her attentive in a splendid pose that I was grateful for because I was able to capture her while she was sunbathing.

Su cabeza es como de una serpiente, así que entre su mal genio y su aspecto, a Ruperta hay que respetar. La pueden ver atenta en una pose espléndida que le agradecí porque la pude captar mientras tomaba el sol.

There are moments when Ruperta is petrified, remaining motionless for a long time and it is just when she is taking advantage of the sun's rays on her shell. That was the best moment to take some pictures. She as a cold-blooded animal goes about her sunny routine. Wise nature.

Hay momentos en que Ruperta se queda como petrificada, permaneciendo inmóvil mucho tiempo y es justo cuando ella está aprovechando los rayos del sol sobre su caparazón. Ese fue el mejor momento para tomar algunas fotos. Ella como animal de sangre fría cumple su soleada rutina. Sabia naturaleza.

She already felt annoyed, perhaps because of the heat, because an interesting fact is that tortoises are reptiles that need to spend time underwater. She starts to move and it is to cool off after so much sun.

Ya se sintió fastidiada, quizás por el calor, porque un dato interesante es que los galápagos son reptiles que necesitan pasar tiempo bajo el agua. Ella se empieza a mover y es para buscar refrescarse después de tanto sol.

She turns around, she didn't mind putting her back in front of my lens, Ruperta just wanted to go in the water. Look at her legs and tail, they are ideal for an aquatic animal. I am especially struck by the legs where you can see the toes glued together by membranes.

No more talk, Ruperta tells me and goes to the pond.

Se da la vuelta, no le importó poner su retaguardia frente a mi lente, Ruperta solo quería irse al agua. Vean sus patas y cola, ellas son ideales para un animal acuático. Especialmente me llama la atención las patas donde se pueden ver los dedos pegados por membranas.

No más charla, me dice Ruperta y se va al estanque.

Ruperta has her pond where she likes to be submerged even when she eats. She takes into the water every branch and piece of fruit that my family gives to everyone in the pen. When feeding time comes, like all tortoises, she reveals excellent vision because she quickly comes out of the water to grab everything she can with her mouth to take it to the pond and there she feeds hidden under the water. So you can see that her pond is not very clean but for her it is paradise.

Ruperta tiene su estanque donde le gusta estar sumergida incluso cuando come. Ella se lleva al agua toda rama y trozos de frutas que le pone mi familia a todos en el corral. Cuando llega la hora de la comida, como todo galápago, revela una excelente visión porque rápidamente sale del agua a coger todo lo que puede con su boca para llevárselo al estanque y allí se alimenta oculta bajo el agua. Por eso pueden ver que su estanque no está muy limpio pero para ella es el paraíso.

The pond is Ruperta's refuge, so much so that the morroccoys come very little to drink water when she is submerged. Remember her bad mood? She is not very friendly and bites whenever she has the chance. So it is common to see her around the pond alone.

El estanque es el refugio de Ruperta, tanto que los morrocoyes se acercan poco a beber agua cuando ella está sumergida. ¿Recuerdan lo de su mal humor? Ella es de pocos amigos y muerde cada vez que tiene oportunidad. Así que es común ver los alrededores del estanque solo.

After a few hours I return to the corral and there is Ruperta just out of the pond. She stops and gives me a chance to capture another pose with her whole body wet. She allows me to admire her but not for long.

Luego de unas horas vuelvo al corral y justo está Ruperta recién salida del estanque. Se detiene y me da oportunidad de captar otra pose con todo su cuerpo mojado. Ella permite que la admire pero no por mucho tiempo.

He goes to hide in the shelter where the morrocoys are.

Se va a ocultarse al refugio donde se encuentran los morrocoyes.

She stays there and everyone is disturbed by her presence but accepts her.

Allí se queda y todos se inquietan con su presencia pero la aceptan.

Ruperta was kind enough to give me this photo shoot of her and I remember being grateful to be able to do it. Ruperta does not allow herself to be approached without threatening a bite and those moments of cordiality were a surprise to me and everyone in the family.
