Parque de las Luces or Plaza Cisneros | Admiring public spaces in Medellin
Once again we meet again in the Community of Architecture and Design in hive, my wish is that everyone is well and enjoying their cities and the places they offer to visit. For now I am going to show you La Plaza Cisneros or Parque de las Luces as it is also known, an important place in Medellin, Colombia, which is part of the Centro Administrativo la Alpujarra "José María Córdoba" of which I have already told you about before.
This square is an architectural work that stands out for its tall concrete columns that are actually light poles, in total there are 300, so it is understandable the name Parque de las Luces and that there are people who describe it as a forest of light poles, although it caught my attention that in December it was not illuminated or at least the times I passed it was dark. For security reasons I did not dare to visit it at night, however during the day it is a good place to visit and admire this interesting concrete forest that stands in the center of the city.
The Plaza is very busy because it is in the center of the city of Medellin, an area with a lot of commercial movement. It is only enough to be there to realize the large number of people who frequent it either for tourism or as a forced passage to other areas of the center.
Before continuing it is important to point out that this modern square actually has its origins in the late nineteenth century when it was originally built a covered market that would later be called Plaza de Cisneros in 1898 in honor of the Cuban engineer Francisco Javier Cisneros to whom we owe several important works for progress in Colombia, specifically in Antioquia.
After more than a century, a project for the reorganization and recovery of spaces in Medellín was presented and the honor as designer of the current Plaza Cisneros was given to the Colombian architect Juan Manuel Peláez, who presented his proposal to recover the deteriorated spaces of the square. The work was carried out as such in 2003 with some delays and was inaugurated in 2005. This forest of columns or lamp posts resembles a set of religious columns of some ancient temple and has an astonishing extension of 16,000 m², so it is bigger than you can see with my photos.
It is very interesting to know that in the beginning the square was such an old space built at the end of the 19th century and then with the modern urban redevelopment policy the market is transformed into the current Parque de Las Luces with these 300 columns of 24 meters high and fortified with concrete and metal.
As I already told you, Plaza Cisneros is also called Parque de las Luces, but the most popular name is Parque de las Luces because its main attraction is the light poles that rise up into the Medellín sky.
Unfortunately there is some deterioration and where there should be water fountains with lights it is empty.
But if there is abundant vegetation, you can see the planters between concrete platforms with many ornamental plants.
The pigeons are part of the attraction of the square and that is why there are houses built in wood for them.
I like the style of the seats in wood and iron and I think they are very well preserved despite withstanding the rays of the sun and rain. I also like the distribution with a peculiar order.
I end this publication wishing that the Plaza Cisneros or Parque de las Luces continues to endure as a tourist attraction and that it receives much attention from governmental and private organizations involved in its care, so that this important architectural work of the city of Medellin, capital of the Department of Antioquia, Colombia is preserved and even improved by putting into operation all the tractions that are damaged as the fountains and the same lighting of the park.

Am I the only one here who seems to prefer the old building compared to the new one?
So it seems 😄 But of course seeing the old building is admirable, it was a very important work in its time because of its usefulness, it was a very big market. Greetings and blessings @maytom
Greetings @guitarmcy and welcome to the community for architecture+design lovers.
Wow! The majestic poles of light! Those eye-catching pillars easily grab the public's attention thus are emblematic symbols of the city. Pardon me for my wild imagination, but they also seem to resemble a bunch of Falcon rockets from SpaceX, ready to blast into space at any given moment, lol. 🤣
Too bad that iconic urban plaza is not safe during the evenings and I would have loved to see photos of them with all their dazzling lighting systems turned on. What a spectacular exhibition of illumination it could have been, right dear friend @sorprendente? Can you show us some night pictures from other sources? 😊
Oh my friend @storiesoferne, sorry for my absence I had some problems to solve but everything is going better now. Wow, you have a good imagination because the light poles do look like rockets 😄 I hope to get some night photos of the Parque de las Luces sometime but what I do have for sure are some night photos of another very special place that I will present in the next few days 😉 Greetings dear friend and blessings to you!

What an interesting square, that pile of columns (300 wow) , must look amazing at night. Beautiful pictures
The Plaza de las Luces is impressive I hope someday to be able to spend the night, but not so late because of the insecurity in the place. Although unfortunately I know that not everything works well, the lights, the fountains, there is abandonment. Greetings and blessings @doriangel
