El Niño y la Garza es más que una animación bonita - Opinión [ESP-ENG]

Tras la muerte de su madre en un incendio, Mahito y su padre viajarán a las afueras de Tokio para huir tanto del pasado como de la inminente guerra que acecha a la ciudad. Ambos se hospedarán en la casa de Natsuko, quien además de ser la tía de Mahito, también es la nueva esposa de su papá. El lugar es amplio y verde, y está cercado por una gran laguna en la que mora una garza nada amigable. Mahito deberá enfrentar una vida que no desea, al lado de una tía que ahora es su mamá y una garza que comienza a hostigarlo. Lo peor llega cuando se encuentra con una torre vieja en la que se conectan varias dimensiones en el tiempo y el espacio. Acorralado por la culpa, e instigado por la garza, Mahito sucumbirá a un viaje en el que su vida cambiará para siempre.

After the death of his mother in a fire, Mahito and his father travel to the outskirts of Tokyo to escape both the past and the impending war that stalks the city. The two will stay at the home of Natsuko, who in addition to being Mahito's aunt, is also his father's new wife. The place is large and green, and is surrounded by a large lagoon where a heron dwells, not at all friendly. Mahito will have to face a life he does not want, with an aunt who is now his mother and a heron that begins to harass him. The worst comes when he comes across an old tower that connects several dimensions in time and space. Cornered by guilt, and instigated by the heron, Mahito will succumb to a journey in which his life will change forever.

Por algún tiempo, esperé con ansias el estreno de esta nueva proeza animada original de los estudios Ghibli y Hayao Miyazaki. Me desentendí un poco de la propuesta cinematográfica hasta que supe, a principios de enero, que esta había ganado un Golden Globe. Volvió el entusiasmo entonces. De la trayectoria de Miyazaki, solo conozco unos cuantos éxitos, entre estos están: El viaje de Chihiro, Mi Vecino Totoro y la que habría sido su película más reciente "Kaze Tachinu". De las tres, la protagonizada por Chichiro me gustó más. El toque fantástico y espiritual deslumbró mis sentidos, tanto por el paralelismo mágico como las criaturas monstruosas que coexistían en la historia.

No obstante, el Niño y la Garza han llegado para cambiar las cosas aquí. Y es que, más allá de la elogiada cinematografía, admito que esta historia me enamoró por la profundidad de sus elementos; tan cuidados y estilizados, y tan alegóricos y metafóricos... recordé el realismo mágico y algunas teorías de la ciencia relativa. Pero también reflexioné como un loco: intentando buscar el significado a tanta épica desbordada. En esta breve opinión, detallaré algunos de los tantos elementos destacables de esta película despampanante.

For some time, I eagerly awaited the release of this new original animated feat from Ghibli Studios and Hayao Miyazaki. I was a bit disengaged from the cinematic proposal until I learned in early January that it had won a Golden Globe. My enthusiasm then returned. Of Miyazaki's career, I only know of a few hits, among these are: Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro and what would have been his most recent film "Kaze Tachinu". Of the three, I liked the one starring Chichiro the best. The fantastical and spiritual touch dazzled my senses, both because of the magical parallelism and the monstrous creatures that coexisted in the story.

However, the Boy and the Heron have arrived to change things here. And it is that, beyond the praised cinematography, I admit that this story made me fall in love because of the depth of its elements; so neat and stylized, and so allegorical and metaphorical... I was reminded of magical realism and some theories of relative science. But I also reflected like a madman: trying to find the meaning of so much overflowing epic. In this brief review, I will detail some of the many remarkable elements of this stunning film.

Vuelve el paralelismo

La historia de Mahito me recordó a la de Chihiro. Salvo que, al menos en esta ocasión, el mundo real conecta con dimensiones alternas y espirituales. En la aventura de Chihiro hay notables barreras entre un mundo y el otro, en la de Mahito esas barreras se dispersan un poco. Miyazaki nos presenta la difícil encrucijada de la creación, en una simple torre vieja donde convive la magia. Recordé el universo de Narnia sin la paradoja del tiempo. La película se toma en serio el argumento de los paraísos perfectos, y la agría decisión de renunciar a ellos.

Me encantó la madurez que impulsó el viaje de Mahito; al principio es difícil conectar con él... es difícil entenderlo. Luego llega la garza: ambos personajes son toscos, arrogantes e impulsivos. Mahito con su arco y flecha, decorado con una pluma de la garza, y la garza con esos dientes amenazantes que sobresalen de su pico. Son la pareja perfecta, aunque en realidad deseen arrancarse el corazón.

The parallelism returns

Mahito's story reminded me of Chihiro. Except that, at least this time, the real world connects with alternate, spiritual dimensions. In Chihiro's adventure there are noticeable barriers between one world and the other, in Mahito's those barriers are somewhat dispersed. Miyazaki presents us with the difficult crossroads of creation, in a simple old tower where magic coexists. I was reminded of the Narnia universe without the paradox of time. The film takes seriously the argument of perfect paradises, and the bitter decision to give them up.

I loved the maturity that drove Mahito's journey; at first it's hard to connect with him...it's hard to understand him. Then comes the heron: both characters are crude, arrogant and impulsive. Mahito with his bow and arrow, decorated with a feather from the heron, and the heron with those menacing teeth protruding from his beak. They are the perfect couple, even if they really want to tear each other's hearts out.

Miyazaki nos deleita con una simple torre

Siempre he creído que en este mundo hay cosas que no podemos percibir, pero que están allí, conviviendo con nosotros. En esta película hay una sinergia entre la vida, la muerte, el pasado y el futuro. Todo dentro de una torre que sirve como un portal entre dimensiones. No puedo contarte el origen de esta, sería entrar en el terreno de los Spoilers. Lo que si puedo hacer, es describir un poco a las criaturas que Miyazaki confecciona para esta obra:

• Periquitos asesinos: comen carne humana y elefantes.

• Garzas condenadas: hambrienta de carne y de libertad.

• Guara guara: criaturas nacientes (su nombre me recuerda a un pescado de mi país, XD)

Estas criaturas tienen un simbolismo importante en la película: son una metáfora viviente del ciclo universal, al menos según mi percepción y lo que pude reflexionar al verlos.

Miyazaki delights us with a simple tower

I have always believed that in this world there are things that we cannot perceive, but they are there, living with us. In this film there is a synergy between life, death, past and future. All within a tower that serves as a portal between dimensions. I can't tell you the origin of this one, it would be getting into Spoilers. What I can do, is to describe a little of the creatures that Miyazaki makes for this work:

• Killer Parakeets: eat human flesh and elephants.
• Condemned herons: hungry for flesh and freedom.
• Guara guara: hatchling creatures (their name reminds me of a fish from my country, XD).

These creatures have an important symbolism in the film: they are a living metaphor of the universal cycle, at least according to my perception and what I could reflect upon seeing them.

La vida reflejada en un niño

De esta película me llevo ese sentido hermoso sobre los temas sensibles de la humanidad. Se nos presenta el bien y mal, por supuesto, pero no al estilo Disney... miramos una retrospectiva del Yin y el Yang, en la honestidad inocente de Mahito. Su duro pasado le permite madurar antes de tomar una decisión trascendental. ¿Somos capaces de aceptar una gran responsabilidad conociendo que no tenemos suficientes cualidades? De aquí nace la belleza de esta obra animada. El largometraje es maduro, sólido y no emplea los recursos explotados del cine americano.

Espero que El Niño y la Garza gane el premio Oscar, pues es de lejos la mejor animación que he visto, todavía más que la tertulia animada de Spiderman y Miles Morales.

Life reflected in a child

From this film I take away that beautiful sense of the sensitive issues of humanity. We are presented with good and evil, of course, but not Disney style.... we see a retrospective of Yin and Yang, in Mahito's innocent honesty. His harsh past allows him to mature before making a momentous decision. Are we capable of accepting a great responsibility knowing that we do not have enough qualities? This is where the beauty of this animated work is born. The feature film is mature, solid and does not employ the exploited resources of American cinema.

I hope The Boy and the Heron wins the Oscar, because it is by far the best animation I have ever seen, even more than the animated talk show of Spiderman and Miles Morales.

La obra cinematográfica de Miyazaki cumplió con mis expectativas; algunas escenas son sugestivamente dantescas. El humor salpica la obra, sobre todo en los puntos más álgidos de la trama. Me reí un montón con los periquitos asesinos... no lo sé, nunca imaginé algo así en la vida. Al fin de cuentas, creo que la aventura de Mahito es la metáfora perfecta de una sociedad de hecatombe. Frágil en la moralidad y el dilema, atrapada en una realidad fragmentada en múltiples infiernos. Y aun así, valerosa: todavía hay razones por las cuales amarla.

Miyazaki's cinematic work lived up to my expectations; some scenes are suggestively Dantesque. Humor is sprinkled throughout, especially at the high points of the plot. I laughed a lot at the killer parakeets...I don't know, I never imagined anything like that in life. In the end, I think Mahito's adventure is the perfect metaphor for a hecatomb society. Fragile in morality and dilemma, trapped in a reality fragmented into multiple hells. And yet, courageous: there are still reasons to love her.
