The first time I saw pyramids, Güímar - Tenerife / La primera vez que vi unas pirámides, Güímar - Tenerife

In the world there are very interesting places that nevertheless are the least promoted, who knows why, this seems to me happened with the mysterious place of which I will speak to you next, The Pyramids of Güímar, located in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

En el mundo existen lugares muy interesantes que sin embargo son los menos promocionados, quién sabe por qué, esto me parece sucedía con el misterioso paraje del que les hablaré a continuación, Las Pirámides de Güímar, ubicadas en la provincia de Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

I didn't know of their existence when I went to this Canary Island several years ago, but in one of my walks I was given in the street a tourist brochure that spoke of them and I was surprised, so I decided to include them in my itinerary, in fact it was the last place I visited during that vacation, of which you can see more pictures in my previous post.

No sabía de su existencia cuando fui a esta Isla Canaria hace varios años, pero en uno de mis paseos me dieron por la calle un folleto turístico que hablaba de ellas y quedé sorprendida, así que decidí incluirlas en mi itinerario, de hecho fue el último lugar que visité durante esas vacaciones, de las que pueden ver más fotos en mi publicación anterior

I asked at the bus station in Santa Cruz and got there, the day was very cloudy, but it didn't rain. At the entrance of the Ethnographic Park Pirámides de Güímar, its official name, you are welcomed by the statue of a Guanche, that's how the primitive population of Tenerife was called.

Pregunté en la estación de autobuses de Santa Cruz y llegué hasta allá, el día estaba muy nublado, pero no llovió. En la entrada del Parque Etnográfico Pirámides de Güímar, su nombre oficial, te da la bienvenida la estatua de un Guanche, así se llamaba la población primitiva de Tenerife.

I paid my entrance fee, which I don't remember how much it cost, and as soon as I entered I saw one of the pyramids, they are not big, but it was the first time I saw something like that and I was excited! Besides, I liked to see something not as popular as the pyramids of Egypt or Mexico.

Pagué mi entrada, que no recuerdo cuánto costó, y apenas entré vi una de las pirámides, no son grandes, pero era la primera vez que yo veía algo así ¡y estaba emocionada! Además me gustó conocer algo no tan popular como las pirámides de Egipto o México.

In this archaeological site there are six stepped pyramids, they are built with stones and although there are several theories about them, it has not been possible to determine who made them or for what purpose.

En este yacimiento arqueológico hay seis pirámides escalonadas, están construidas con piedras y aunque existen varias teorías sobre ellas, no se ha podido determinar ni quién las hizo ni con qué propósito.

The Ethnographic Park Pirámides de Güímar was founded in 1998 thanks to the famous Norwegian anthropologist Thor Heyerdahl, who fought so that these structures would not be razed by an urban plan. In total it has an area of 64,000 square meters, with a museum, gardens, auditorium and the possibility of outdoor trails.

El Parque Etnográfico Pirámides de Güímar se fundó en 1998 gracias al famoso antropólogo noruego Thor Heyerdahl, quien luchó para que estas estructuras no fueran arrasadas por un plan urbanístico. En total tiene un área de 64.000 metros cuadrados, con museo, jardines, auditorio y posibilidad de hacer rutas al aire libre.

Returning to the theories about their origin, Heyerdahl concluded after his research that it was likely that these pyramids were related to those in Mexico, Peru, Polynesia and elsewhere thanks to the primitive navigation aboard boats made of reeds. For the Norwegian scientist, these structures were erected before the arrival of the Spanish colonization in the 15th century, but the truth is that there is no hard evidence of that.

Volviendo a las teorías sobre su origen, Heyerdahl concluyó tras sus investigaciones que era probable que estas pirámides estuviesen relacionadas con las de México, Perú, Polinesia y otros lugares gracias a la navegación primitiva a bordo de barcos hechos de juncos. Para el científico noruego, estas estructuras fueron levantadas antes de la llegada de la colonización española en el siglo XV, pero la verdad es que no hay pruebas contundentes de eso.

On the other hand, other researchers affirm that the pyramids date back to the 19th century and that they were made by the farmers of the area when they removed the stones from their land. They piled them up in this way to be able to cultivate and these piles are called "majanos".

Por otro lado, otros investigadores afirman que las pirámides son del siglo XIX y que las hicieron los agricultores de la zona al sacar las piedras de sus terrenos. Las amontonaron de esa forma para poder cultivar y a estos apilamientos se les llaman “majanos”.

During my visit I was able to watch a short documentary that was shown in the auditorium, where they explained Heyerdahl's theory, talked about the orientation to the sun in the summer and winter solstices that the pyramids of Güímar have and other details that make them similar to other stepped pyramids that exist in the world.

Durante mi visita pude ver un corto documental que proyectaron en el auditorio, allí explicaban la teoría de Heyerdahl, hablaban de la orientación al sol en los solsticios de verano e invierno que tienen las pirámides de Güímar y otros detalles que hacen que se asemejen a otras pirámides escalonadas que existen en el mundo.

Although there are more questions than answers about these singular constructions, I found them fascinating, whether they are old or not so old, plus the environment where they are located is spectacular and they have been responsible for beautifying it even more with areas such as the botanical garden, where you can see endemic plants, that is, that only exist on this island.

Aunque hay más preguntas que respuestas sobre estas singulares construcciones, a mi me parecieron fascinantes, tanto si son antiguas o no tanto, además el entorno donde se encuentran es espectacular y se han encargado de embellecerlo aún más con áreas como el jardín botánico, donde puedes ver plantas endémicas, es decir que sólo existen en esta isla.
