Some streets of Macarao / Algunas calles de Macarao

Every once in a while I start digging through my archives, looking for something specific, but sometimes I get sidetracked and end up finding something else. That's what happened to me this time and I got these photos that I took some time ago while working for a historical memory project.

I had gone to Macarao, an area in the southwest of Caracas (Venezuela), to talk to some people in the community and also to take photos, especially of the old town. I did a little tour with them, along the main avenue, the Bolivar Square, the church and other streets where the oldest buildings are located.

Macarao has a lot of history, it was founded in 1620 and was an area populated by the Toromaima tribe before the Spanish colonization, then it became an agricultural area and was the one that supplied vegetables and fruits to the Venezuelan capital.

Over the years it grew a lot and became urbanized, but walking through its streets it seemed to me that it still retains that village feel.

De vez en cuando me pongo a rebuscar en mis archivos, buscando algo específico, pero hay veces que me desvío y termino encontrando otra cosa. Así me pasó esta vez y conseguí estas fotos que hice hace tiempo mientras trabajaba para un proyecto de memoria histórica.

Había ido hasta Macarao, una zona del suroeste de Caracas (Venezuela), para hablar con algunas personas de la comunidad y también hacer fotos, sobre todo del casco histórico. Hice un pequeño recorrido con ellos, por la avenida principal, la Plaza Bolívar, la iglesia y otras calles donde se encuentran las construcciones más viejas.

Macarao tiene mucha historia, fue fundada en el año 1620 y era una zona poblada por la tribu Toromaima antes de la colonización española, luego se volvió una zona agrícola y era la que abastecía de verduras y frutas a la capital venezolana.

Con el paso de los años creció mucho y se urbanizó, pero caminando por sus calles me pareció que aún conserva ese aire de pueblo.
