Life of xylophages / Vida de xilófagos

In one of the supermarkets I frequent there are some gardens with some trees and other plants with colorful flowers, I was looking at them when I came across some trunks and I thought: why haven't they taken them out? If they are dry and they disfigure the place.

Then I passed them closely and noticed that for others they were still useful, there had grown several fungi that took advantage of that dead wood.

Doing some research, I learned that these fungi are known as xylophagous, which means that they feed on wood. In this case the tree had been cut down some time ago and there was nothing to worry about, but when a tree is alive, these xylophages can kill them, as they rot the wood, that is their way of life.

But on the other hand, these fungi are ecologically important because they have the ability to degrade wood, that is, they act as recyclers of this organic matter, whose components can be used by other living beings such as plants or insects. In short, nothing is wasted in nature.

En uno de los supermercados que suelo frecuentar hay unos jardines con algunos árboles y otras plantas con coloridas flores, iba mirándolas cuando me topé con unos troncos y pensé: ¿por qué no los han sacado? Si están secos y afean el lugar.

Luego les pasé de cerca y noté que para otros sí eran aún útiles, allí habían crecido varios hongos que aprovechaban esa madera muerta.

Investigando un poco, supe que a estos hongos se les conoce como xilófagos, lo que significa que se alimentan de la madera. En este caso el árbol había sido cortado hace tiempo y no había que preocuparse, pero cuando un árbol está vivo, estos xilófagos pueden llegar a matarlos, ya que van pudriendo la madera, esa es su forma de vida.

Pero por otro lado, estos hongos son importantes ecológicamente porque tienen la capacidad de degradar la madera, o sea, actúan como recicladores de esta materia orgánica, cuyos componentes pueden ser aprovechados por otros seres vivos como las plantas o los insectos. En pocas palabras, en la naturaleza nada se desperdicia.
