Caminito and La Bombonera, must-see places if you go to Buenos Aires - Argentina 🇦🇷 Caminito y La Bombonera, lugares imperdibles si vas a Buenos Aires - Argentina

A cheerful atmosphere, bright colors everywhere, houses made of corrugated metal sheets, tango playing and being danced on the sidewalks, the smell of food in the air, street art, fairs, the soccer stadium, and much more, make the neighborhood of La Boca, a must-see place in the city of Buenos Aires, an effervescent synthesis of local culture.

Un ambiente alegre, colores vivos por todos lados, las casas hechas de chapas de metal onduladas, el tango sonando y siendo bailado en las aceras, el olor de la comida en el aire, arte callejero, ferias, el estadio de fútbol, y muchas cosas más, hacen del barrio de La Boca, un lugar imperdible de la ciudad de Buenos Aires, una efervescente síntesis de la cultura local.

In my recent posts I have been sharing my experience in the Argentine capital, a trip I made several years ago, and without a doubt Caminito and La Bombonera stadium were among our favorite places. To get to La Boca, which is at the southern end of the city, we took a bus, leaving very early in the morning to spend most of the day there.

En mis publicaciones recientes he estado compartiendo mi experiencia por la capital argentina, un viaje que hice hace varios años ya, y sin duda Caminito y el estadio La Bombonera fueron de nuestros lugares favoritos. Para llegar hasta La Boca, que queda en el extremo sur de la ciudad, tomamos un autobús, salimos bien temprano en la mañana para pasar gran parte del día allí.

As soon as we walked a bit and arrived at Caminito, the famous pedestrian street, I was approached by a stilt walker, it was a nice welcome.

Apenas caminamos un poco y llegamos a Caminito, la famosa peatonal, me abordó un zanquero, fue una bonita bienvenida.

Then my mom asked me for my camera to take me a picture with him.

Luego mi mamá me pidió la cámara para fotografiarme con él.

And then we plunged into these cobblestone streets, along with many other people, this is a very visited tourist spot.

Y seguidamente nos sumergimos por esas calles adoquinadas, junto a mucha otra gente, este es un punto turístico muy visitado.

This neighborhood began to be populated at the end of the XIX century, as many ships arrived there, many people also arrived, for example a large number of Italian immigrants, mostly from Genoa, who gave this place its particular appearance. They built the "Conventillos", which are collective dwellings, where several families lived, and painted them in different colors because they were the leftovers from the ships that stopped at the port, where many of them worked. Many of these former dwellings are now stores, art galleries, restaurants, etc, so you can take a look inside.

Este barrio comenzó a poblarse a finales del siglo XIX, como allí llegaban muchos barcos, también llegó mucha gente, por ejemplo una gran cantidad de inmigrantes italianos, la mayoría provenientes de Génova, quienes le dieron su particular apariencia a este lugar. Ellos construyeron los “Conventillos”, que son viviendas colectivas, donde vivían varias familias, y las pintaron de diversos colores porque era lo que sobraba de las embarcaciones que paraban en el puerto, donde muchos trabajaban. Muchas de estas antiguas viviendas ahora son tiendas, galerías de arte, restaurantes, etc, así que se les puede echar un vistazo por dentro.

The great icons of Argentine culture such as Carlos Gardel or Evita, represented in different ways, are seen in every corner of Caminito and in the souvenirs that are sold here, and of course, you can't miss the soccer idol Diego Armando Maradona, who was also a player and eternal lover of Boca Juniors, a team whose stadium is located in this area.

Los grandes iconos de la cultura argentina como Carlos Gardel o Evita, representados de distintas formas, son vistos en cualquier rincón de Caminito y en los souvenirs que son vendidos aquí, y claro, no puede faltar el ídolo del fútbol Diego Armando Maradona, quien además fue jugador y amante eterno del Boca Juniors, equipo cuyo estadio se encuentra en esta zona.

In this neighborhood you can breathe a lot of art, bohemia, in the 50's, the painter Benito Quinquela Martin and his neighbors, were the ones who recovered Caminito, which was an alley of 150 meters, and turned it into what it is nowadays. Quinquela was leading the movement of painters in Buenos Aires at that time, portraying in his works the daily life of the people, and when he achieved national and international success, he made large donations to improve the area.

En este barrio se respira mucho arte, bohemia, y es que en los años ’50, el pintor Benito Quinquela Martín y sus vecinos, fueron los que recuperaron Caminito, que era un callejón de 150 metros, y lo convirtieron en lo que es hoy en día. Quinquela lideraba la movida de pintores de Buenos Aires en esa época, retratando en sus obras la vida cotidiana de la gente, y al alcanzar el éxito nacional e internacional, hizo grandes donativos para mejorar la zona.

We walked quite a bit, and by noon we started looking for a place to sit and eat. There were many culinary offers, and most of them were not expensive, we decided on a restaurant that had tables on the street and a live music show.

Caminamos bastante, y ya al mediodía empezamos a buscar dónde sentarnos a comer. Había muchísimas ofertas culinarias, y la mayoría no eran caras, nos decidimos por un restaurante que tenía las mesas en la calle y show musical en vivo.

I especially wanted to see the tango dancers, I find this dance as spectacular as it is difficult, I was delighted to see the presentation of this couple.

Quería ver sobre todo a los bailarines de tango, me parece tan espectacular como difícil este baile, me encantó ver la presentación de esta pareja.

I took several pictures of them, and when they finished, the dancer came up to me and asked me if I wanted to take some pictures with him, I'm sure he noticed my enthusiasm 😂. I was a little embarrassed, but my mom told me, come on don't be silly, so I gave her the camera so she could immortalize me in tango poses.

Les tomé varias fotos, y cuando terminaron, el bailarín se acercó a mí y me dijo que si quería tomarme unas fotos con él, seguro notó mi entusiasmo 😂. Me dio un poco de pena, pero mi mamá me dijo, dale no seas tonta, entonces le di la cámara para que me inmortalizara en poses de tango.

After daring with these poses, the food arrived, my mom ordered the typical Argentinean barbecue, but as I don't eat land or air meat (only fish and seafood), I ordered a salad and some empanadas. And as you can see, I also had a cold beer, it was hot, I don't usually drink beer, but I wanted to try the local one, Quilmes.

Después de atreverme con estas poses, llegó la comida, mi mamá pidió el típico asado argentino, pero como yo no como carne terrestre ni aérea (sólo pescados y mariscos), pedí una ensalada y algunas empanadas. Y como ven, también me tomé una cerveza bien fría, hacía calor, no suelo tomar cerveza, pero quería probar la local, Quilmes.

The next point to visit in the neighborhood of La Boca was the stadium of the Boca Juniors soccer team, known as La Bombonera. On the way there we saw more art displayed in the streets.

El siguiente punto a visitar en el barrio de La Boca fue el estadio del equipo de fútbol Boca Juniors, conocido como La Bombonera. En el camino hacia allá vimos más arte desplegado en las calles.

And finally we arrived at the stadium, a structure built in 1940 and with a capacity for 57,200 spectators. Although its official name is Alberto J. Armando Stadium, everyone calls it La Bombonera (box of chocolates), according to what we were told, this is because those who designed it thought it was shaped like a box of chocolates, funny isn't it? We bought our tickets and took the simple tour or "Express Visit", which showed us the most important areas of the place.

Y finalmente llegamos al estadio, una estructura construida en 1940 y con capacidad para 57.200 espectadores. Aunque su nombre oficial es Estadio Alberto J. Armando, todos lo llaman La Bombonera, según nos dijeron, esto es porque a los que lo diseñaron les parecía que tenía forma de caja de bombones de chocolates, ¿curioso no? Compramos nuestras entradas e hicimos el tour sencillo o “Visita Express”, que nos mostró las áreas más importantes del lugar.

I was super excited, I'm not a Boca Juniors fan but I'm a soccer fan, and being in such a legendary place made me very happy.

Yo estaba súper emocionada, no soy fan del Boca Juniors pero sí del fútbol, y estar en un lugar tan legendario me dio mucha felicidad.

The stands were empty, but I could still imagine what the atmosphere was like when there was a match, Argentines are very fervent fans, that is known worldwide.

Las tribunas estaban vacías, pero aún así podía imaginarme cómo era el ambiente cuando había partido, los argentinos son unos aficionados muy fervientes, eso es conocido en todo el mundo.

After visiting the court, we were taken to see an exhibition at the entrance, with posters and other objects related to this sport and the club, too bad I couldn't take many pictures, the lighting was dim and my camera was not so good.

Después de conocer la cancha, nos llevaron a ver una exhibición que había en la entrada, con afiches y otros objetos relacionados a este deporte y al club, lástima que no pude tomar casi fotos, la iluminación era tenue y mi cámara no tan buena.

And so ended our tour of La Boca and Buenos Aires, soon I will show you another region of the country that we were able to visit.

Y así terminó nuestro paseo por La Boca y por Buenos Aires, próximamente les mostraré otra región del país que pudimos visitar.
