Tales of the Urban Explorer: The Woodfield Centre

It’s a strange concept and it happens again and again.

You explore a building, not realising there's another one just a couple of hundred yards away until you're back again three years later. Having the information to hand is crucial unless you love wasting time.

19_IMG_9023_19.jpg

In today's Urban Exploring world, it's a handful of 'chosen ones' on Facebook who get the cream. I am not in this exclusive club that visits one Time Capsule after another, and the likes of us peons have to scrape together on the scraps.

...'maybe I need to get better at using Right-Move'...

This brings me to 'The Woodfield Centre', a terrible condition, E-rated derpy shithole that I know you are all dying to read about. Until I took the time to dig into this one, it had a temporary label of, 'Derp near the Witches House'.

The Witches House, otherwise known as 'The Hollins' has since been demolished. My memory of it was just about avoiding a large pile of human shit around the back, and a condom box on the steps.

2_IMG_4916_2.jpg
...'The Witch's House, now gone and flattened. There are..., were similarities in the design, plus added turds'...

It wasn't the best, was collapsing and demolition was probably the best thing that could have happened to it.

The Woodfield Centre’ was a War Hospital, and was later used by the NHS. That's about all I can find, and if it was a 'hospital' I can't imagine many of our boys with injuries being housed here unless you figure the outhouses were part of it.

20_IMG_9024_20.jpg

We approached from the wrong angle. It's nothing new, but meant climbing a wall before disappearing into dense undergrowth as this looked like the shortest route.

Little did we know at the time a jaunt through the woods, past the former 'Witches House' would bring us right to it.

18_IMG_9022_18.jpg

Noting the warning 'Danger Fragile Roof', I wondered what was going through the minds of who attached that. Were they expecting credible patients to veto the front door and climb on the roof to fix their broken legs?

Could this provide some form of psychical therapy, and a challenge not to fall through... but to balance on the edge?

While tempting to try and with that thought of 'improve your fitness' in my mind, the upper window was barred, the front door badly tinned, and there was a gaping hole in the lower window.

Pragmatism prevailed, and we jumped through.

1_IMG_9003_1.jpg

Another burned-out hole, could we expect anything else given the exterior views? Some melting had tortured the bottom of that window.

2_IMG_9004_2.jpg

It would make for uncomfortable sleeping, very hard and your feet would fall off the end unless you're a short-arsed dwarf.

3_IMG_9005_3.jpg

There was no shortage of doors, you can sleep on several that are on offer. There are even holes on the ground floor to place your shoes before drifting off into slumber.

4_IMG_9006_4.jpg

It's like they stick these signs on for the sake of irony. 2001, it gives me a little clue as to when it was torched by the fire starters but omits the NHS confirmation I was searching for.

5_IMG_9007_5.jpg

Now those are quality stairs, and I’m not being sarcastic. For such a terrible quality derp, there’s no fear of injury going up there.

6_IMG_9008_6.jpg

As well as being a 'No Smoking Area', it's now a no-go area unless you want a swift death. The cobwebs I was trying to highlight in the foreground looked a lot better than in this image.

7_IMG_9009_7.jpg

This was spectacular but once again, came out quite crummy as an image. The lighting made it something to behold and at the time I figured I had at least one decent capture to take from this uninspiring mess.

8_IMG_9011_8.jpg

A view recovering war heroes would have taken in while listening to the whistling bombs falling over nearby Manchester. That other section looks more like stables, than an area teeming with wanna-be Florence Nightgales'.

9_IMG_9012_9.jpg

I did wave to @anidiotexplores through the floorboards, who was downstairs and looked up surprised. Unlike the solid stairs, up here was decidedly dicey.

10_IMG_9013_10.jpg

As far as I dare go... and when you see what else there is, you will know why.

11_IMG_9014_11.jpg

Is there a reason to continue? A bucket lid, the remains of a sleeping bag, the sleeper may still be over there... dead, but my nose told me otherwise.

12_IMG_9016_12.jpg

Backtracking and having a good look at the very dodgy hole I had to semi-jump across I headed back down the stairs.

13_IMG_9017_13.jpg

There's even a bannister to clutch if you feel a little unsafe.

14_IMG_9018_14.jpg

Is it glue or frothing wallpaper, I can't be sure.

15_IMG_9019_15.jpg

We departed and headed for the 'other buildings' which looked extremely devoid of anything photogenic.

Even the graffiti was shit, as well as very old.

16_IMG_9020_16.jpg

Is it some type of ancient heating device that requires fossil fuel such as coal?

17_IMG_9021_17.jpg

Next to 'The Woodfield Centre' is a new housing estate. It would not surprise me if this ex-hospital is the next to go.

It looks like they should have tore it down years ago. Pretty nasty that one!

It's on the very edge of the woods, and the new estate has huge fences and barbed wire forbidding any resident to get near it. A walk through the park will take anyone there. I don't why they bother.

A handful of chosen ones who get the cream

I thought you were in that handful! Big creamy face from all the creaming! Can't imagine you at the back getting the dregs with what we have seen.

Ooer, that could all mean something entirely different. :OD

No smoking after 2001, you almost forget that prior to that everywhere was a hotbed for the snouts!

A handful of chosen ones who get the cream

Jeez.. I'm not. Facebook is a tool for getting readers to my website and HIVE, otherwise it's full of backstabbing cretins telling you lies. I won't try and my pry my way into the 'elite class' as that would require things.. which means...

More derpy shit-holes coming soon heh...

This place looks really damaged
They really destroyed things here
If they want to put it back in place, it’s gonna need a crazy renovation

Not much left there now. Is arson still likely to get you life? I had a flashback to Life for Christine that they showed us at school. We've got a government who want to build more homes when we have thousands of derelict buildings that could be converted or torn down to make space.

'Life for Christine' looks entertaining but is from 1980. Maybe it's on YouTube somewhere? They showed us clips of John Cleese at school on an very early VCR. They were entertaining, but I can't remember the content.

They showed us various films back then, but that one stuck in my mind.

The full feature is on YouTube. They remind me of when I was young, all that grain in the film and British gritty content.

The entire house have been torn apart, I guess she did the best she can pulling it down was not really a bad ideo. I appreciate the fact that search for such discoveries, I just cannot imagine myself anywhere near such a nasty building, it even looks scary at some point.

If someone would renovate this house, it would be a good home for some who don't have their own home

Dang, there wasn't much art or interesting things to see there. But if one was looking for different ways to die or get injured, then that will be up there. The place looked like it will break down at any moment. I'm surprised you were able to get good footing there with a lot of holes and the structural integrity looking bad.

This is a very fantastic adventure
The place is looking like one that will collapse any moment from then
It looks badly destroyed

When you look at the first picture, you think of how peaceful a house they have made among the flowers and greenery. But when you go inside, you feel like you are in a room where scenes from a horror movie were filmed. It is only a matter of time before monster-looking creatures emerge from the gaps and rooms... Even though the interior is in ruins, the pictures you took look like art value. I think the only solid part of the building is the stairs.

It has become a blog post that raises awareness with your different and unique writing style. Congratulations. @slobberchops

Derpy shitholes is where it is at. That place needs to go. I can only imagine someone falling through the floor or trying to climb on the roof, even with the warnings.

Oh wow! I want to know what that furnace-looking thing is as well. I wish I could find some sort of makers marque on it, but it's just too far gone. Shape-wise it looks more like a wood stove than a boiler, with the bottom grate opening up to allow you to clean out the ashes, but I can't find anything similar online. All my google-fu is not helping. 😢
