Tales of the Urban Explorer: The Safe House
It looked to have some potential and getting to it had taken a while.
'The Safe House' could well be a Time Capsule, that's if we could get inside and that is always a pertinent factor.
Some time had passed since @anidiotexplores and I had entered West Yorkshire. After a day of mass fails the year before including one bloke who chased us from his closed-down pub screaming in anger, we had chosen to give the White Rose County a substantial break.
'I'm reporting you to the police you fucking lousy thieves' yelled redface as he stopped dead in his tracks, intent on snapping us and more importantly my car registration to hand over to the law.
We were not thieves of course and nothing came of the incident but as funny as these stories may seem, we try our best never to be seen, and the less human contact we encounter the better.
After that, we saw no more reports regarding redface and his pub. Chasing explorers away can work occasionally, especially if word gets out on the scene.
'What's in that garage?', I asked my comrade. How would either of us know, this was virgin territory and it was a stupid question.
'save the best until last last'... was my theory.
It resembled a garage only loosely and some thoughtful soul had decided to rip off the lock allowing easy access for us.
'How ironic considering what we would find in there'
Inside was initially startling and the innards were bursting with equipment, but of what type?
My initial thoughts were of some DIY-obsessed freak in overdrive who thought he could collect every screw, nut and bolt ever created by mankind, but a more detailed analysis told me 'Safes'.
Could it be the owner of the house was a budding master safecracker, intent on hours of practice so he could rob those difficult safes nestled in bank vaults?
Or did he provide said banks with these safes, ensuring he knew where they were located?
Such knowledge could make a man rich, so long as he could get a reliable crew formed, maybe Ronald Biggs had joined the consortium?

A bottle of Argentinian wine, but I had to google that. Relax and get pissed while furthering your self-education.
Safes of all types, some with more than a smidge of rust.
All types including the home variety as well as numerous spare parts.
Some contained handles, others dials that looked like they'd not been turned in years.
The heavy bag was a mystery and hardly fitted in with the rest of the junk.
'aldridgesecurity.co.uk' does exist, was this the parts wholesaler?
So much crap that you can't get to it all. This was like a Time Capsule of the business type.
No doubt there's a substantial amount of money here in parts and I don't mean the festering Tropical Fruit drink.
Padlock blanks as well as Pipe ones. Only a Safe expert would know about such stuff.
I was hoping for something more exciting such as 'my fetish with sniffing smelly vulvas', but it was more safe words and orders…., hmmm dull.
'Safe and Vault Technologies', talk about being in the zone. Some instructions accompanied this boring-looking journal from 2016, probably to be directed at a noddy buying a safe.
Keys as well as locks and no shortage of them.
It was time to move on to the house and possibly better things except…

This was both our opinions after climbing through a broken window with relative ease.
I tried to hone in on the paperwork but again it was as dull as sodden dishwater. Another barely readable order or similar.
Upstairs, the yielder of excitement and copious granny's knicker drawers was semi-sealed and neither of us fancied ripping the nails out to go and peep.
I do like the style, with open arches but from experience it makes for a colder house as all of it needs to be heated.
While there might be no mindless graffiti there was precious little else within the house.
Wood burners, are great if you have a cheap source of trees and don't mind that constant stench of burning on your property.
The word 'Chubb' says locks to me, the security camera was looking a little rough around the edges.
A few family portraits hurled in one corner along with a few gardening tools,and guess what... a safe.
This strange device, I am not sure what that is, any suggestions?
The 'extension' of 'The Safe House' had suffered from fire damage, but not enough to make it unliveable. What had happened?
From this angle, apart from the crappy graffiti on the outside wall, it looked perfectly fine, though a little rundown.
What was beyond those upstairs windows? That was a secret it was unwilling to divulge.

It doesn't, the board rippers had done a very poor job and made a bad attempt at getting upstairs. I have since seen a reports that it's now open, but I can't be arsed going back just for that, it's not exactly close by!

The clutter in that garage gives it that "lived-in" look. That wall of safes reminds me of that old saying about having cash on hand in the event of emergencies. The state of the buildings in general resembles a good portion of the rust-belt city that I live in, which for some reason, people from better states such as Colorado and Hawaii seem strangly attracted to...
Not sure if you mean literally, there was no bed in there and it would be freezing in winter.
No, it simply reminds me of the advanced state of decay of the housing stock here in general. The front yards with rusted cars up on cinder blocks and piles of junk everywhere is a sight to behold here.
Sounds like a good place to explore, if you can dodge bullets?

Is it safe? Someone had a little business going and obviously liked to work out their frustrations on the punchbag. The strange machine looks like some kind of calculator.
It was a real heavyweight bag, the type boxers use. Hitting that for a while would give you a proper workout.

I took a photo of the odd machine and asked Google Lens the closest thing I found was a Comptometer
The Comptometer was a mechanical calculator that was the first to be commercially successful and to have push buttons. It was patented in 1887 and produced until the mid-1970s. The Comptometer could perform basic arithmetic, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. It was fast because each time a key was pressed, the total was accumulated, allowing the operator to press multiple keys at once.
That's a little before my time, if Lens has got it right. When it comes to image recognition, I have had little success with these types of apps.

Initially I thought it was just trash littered all over the place, but upon closer inspection, there was a lot of interesting things around. I feel like one can go the whole day just looking and identifying all those items. It's a pretty cool exploration.

A "comptometer" the last time (and also the only time I think) I saw one was in the office of Mr. "Manuel Sanchez" the old accountant who kept the accounts of a hardware store belonging to my uncle Marcos... Most men of earlier generation kept everything bar the kitchen sink for if, maybe, in case they need it again, some of us still do.... so yup he had a good collection going there.
Before age of internet one relied heavily on manuals to show you how without taking your arse on some long winded technical college or likewise at a price.

Only me has never heard of a 'Comptometer'. Calculators were just starting to appear on my last year of school.., those chunky ones. I'm too young for these earlier contraptions!
Put it down to age, never seeing one, similar to the ones used in courts before recordings became a thingy. Stenographer always sat in front of Judge attacking the machine in designated table, a form of shorthand. I learned called Pitman shorthand at school, I was shit at it too.
Ended up using a dictaphone where 'boss' could talk into the machine, hand it over, I typed using a left or right foot peddle to move forward or back at pretty good speed... Everything in carbon copies three to be exact white original, blue for alphabetical filing, then pink in date file, nothing left to chance, no typing errors allowed or start again!

Typing was for the girls back in my school days, the lads would not be seen dead in those classes. It was Metalworking for us, crafting Kung Fu stars.., at least that is what I did 😀
Shorthand was squiggles and wiggles, twirls and whirls you then had to decipher after you had written it?
Schooling was old system grade 1 to standard 5, then high school standard 6 and 7 (when boys went to metal/woodwork, girls cooking classes), I moved to Commercial high standard 8 to senior certificate, where the typing and shorthand came into play, subjects like mercantile law and commerce came into line to prep you for working years in an office.
They offered Typing in my school, but no boys ever did it. That was far too girly. I still only type with 2 fingers, it would have done me well.
The Kung Fu stars were terribly made and failed with stick in the local garages I threw them at. Not all all like Master Po 😒
Handful of guys opted for commercial high and did typing, little did they know it was a good thing to learn back then.
Kung Fu..., most definitely not a master with sticks, we used clay at the end of flexible stick to whip off at each other, similar, did the trick when you learned to flick the wrist properly. 😂
