Tales of the Urban Explorer: Ridge Lea Hospital
I had hours to kill but knew how to minimise the boredom at least by a portion. @bingbabe was doing a mammoth run around Lake Windermere, with a different start and end point.
I was to be Jeeves the Chauffeur, a very bored Jeeves. Ridge Lea Asylum, though not exactly close but was to be my saviour. Going alone into an abandoned asylum was not one I was cherishing.
Nine months earlier, with @bingbabe in tow, we had failed to get inside; failed when every bastard on the planet had managed. It was an annoyance, and yet the distance to try again was prohibitive.
There had to be a reason and this was it. I was hoping to find a renegade Goth Band inside rehearsing, full of strange make-up, wearing shades (mandatory), and playing the worst music you have ever heard. This is what greeted @anidiotexplores on his visit.
He is one lucky bastard. The vocalist was even female.
Word on the street was the security had vacated and things had gotten worse. You could walk in via a myriad of holes, it was no big deal.
…yeah, that’s what I heard last time…
There have been taller tales floating around that deep in the basement, behind impenetrable locked vault doors lay two electric chairs, still smoking with corpses strapped to them.
I could try and find the immovable doors, take some steroid powder with me, and heave with all my might just to be the first to see these grisly sights.
After deliberating about this legendary fable, I figured.. nahhh.., it's probably a load of bullshit and besides.. the steroid powder in question was found another derp and likely to be several decades out of date.
Parking up in the identical spot as my last ill-timed visit, I approached the front gate and gasped. Actually, I didn't, I walked past the broken-down gate quite relieved to hear that this time, the talk on the street was fact.
This time I saw nobody and that was good. I hate exploring alone, there’s no backup, no safety, fear is amplified, sounds are magnified and any wild ravishing ghouls in there would eat me for breakfast.
It was a nice day and besides the anti-climbing fencing now being floored, I wasn't seeing all these holes.
Heading further in revealed a different view. Which one should I climb through?
My feeling was that I didn't want to be here for very long. This was a large hospital and inside was silent, and I mean deadly quiet. You get used to this, but I generally explore with someone else and there's some noise.
Trashed and I mean big time. The corridors were dark and unwelcoming. Even with a huge light, it was disconcerting to walk down there.
Older hospitals tend to have these long straight corridors that go on forever. This image shows that well.
Burnt and the Nazis have been here already. They tend to make their mark often.
It’s better than I can draw, but not exactly quality artwork.
One of the many ways into Ridge Lea Hospital; the difference from just nine months beforehand was startling.
Just about every room was trashed; the windows were now full of holes.
One of several baths I came across. That’s a very public place to get your kit off. Better placement would be recommended.
The obligatory cock-shot.
Finding anything legible was challenging. I would say that 'Marine Windows' should make another visit. There are plenty of windows that need replacing.
Why not rip the radiators off the walls? Is there a reason for this?
Technical Manual Supplements. The contents are talking about Octal and Hexadecimal. While that's perfectly understandable to me, it won't be to the regular reader.
The Oaklands Unit appears to be short of staff. Nobody had written their names on the whiteboard for the latest shift. It’s just as well as up until now, ’Ridge Lea Hospital’ had thankfully remained silent.
My ears were alerted to any noise. Talk about fucking creepy, this was about my limit.
I guess some of the staff didn’t want to do their work. ‘Fuck You’.., that’s the rebellious spirit. Just tell them I say.
I walked and saw room upon room of destruction before bumping into this old Football game. It had seen better days.
When I see those snakey things I automatically think 'grow'. However, they do need to be silver in colour to qualify.
No shortage of glass shards in this window frame.
Yet another voyeuristic bather.
… and another way to escape ’Ridge Lea Hospital’ if any strange noises were to enter my ears.
It wasn’t looking promising for the ‘Halton Ward’. I mean, would you like to be cared for in such lovely surroundings?
It does make a refreshing change to see a vagina, even if it’s ‘My Mums’.
Scaffolding holding up the roof; the desire to violently kick the poles was not in my thoughts. I wanted to live.
Trying to not get lost, I entered the 'Male Dormitory'. I would have preferred the Female one, but the likelihood of seeing more vaginas in that area was highly unlikely.
I spared you from the contents, they are never pleasant.
Let me out….
Even the bad graffiti is peeling off the walls. The paint has had enough of the dampness.
It was a long way down and not my exit point.
This one I did climb through. I needed to walk around ’Ridge Lea Hospital', and see the rear views.
What a frowning old building you are. I didn’t feel any sense of warmth in the least.
Most of the fencing had been kicked over. It's not exactly tough to flatten Heras fencing.
I figured I had seen the majority and thankfully had not met a soul. You don’t want to meet anyone while alone if you can help it.
Feeling that I had missed a little, it was back through another window and a small reprise. This seemed to be some kind of reception area.
Once again I found myself roaming the derelict corridors of ’Ridge Lea Hospital’. It looked quite similar in this wing.
Anything written I pounced upon, even the old pack of yeast. Did they make bread here?
I am sure I spotted this area before, only on the lower floor. A long drop and little to hold you back. Safety is hardly a priority.
I somehow managed to escape by the same access point as I originally climbed through. Everything was still silent, no sounds to be heard.
With some relief, I left 'Ridge Lea Hospital’. It would have been preferable to explore it duo, though it would have scared @bingbabe out of her wits.
Asylums are the ultimate of creepy explores. If you can solo one, you can solo anything.
FOOTNOTE: Demolition has once again been refused as outlined by this article.
Ridge Lea Hospital was built in 1916 and was an Asylum for some years. Its fate is now to rot away, get more unsafe, attract the TourBus, attract more vandalism, and likely get burnt down soon. This is the way…

I can imagine this being a beautiful place before to be in an asylum. So sad it’s now in this state.
Happy holidays
B
Beautiful to be in an Asylum? It's where the locked up the nutters long ago. The word 'Asylum' has changed over the decades as it is not technically acceptable anymore. In 1916.., it probably looked like this.
Oh. and Happy Xmas!
No the building I mean, and what better place to be among people with the same problems in a beautiful building and working on mental set of mind 😉
Is @spaminator still pestering you, I thought that was all finished?
No that was only while there was maintenance on the bot apparently
What a cool explore. A braver man than I. That would be my limit of creepy as well. Great photos. That place is thrashed. I'd love to show up and find a goth band practicing there. That would be awesome. Perfect setting!
So would I, I am quite partial to the genre. This band were extremely bad I have been told hehe..
You’re like the king of #Urbex bro no lie

It saddens me to see the unlimited propensity for humans to destroy things rather than make them better. I will never understand why people choose to vandalize and wreck things.
Young people, that's how they are here. They don't grow up until around 30.
The way the wallpapers open up almost one by one and the corners hang down gives it a very gothic feel for some reason. I mean, it already looks like such a building from the outside... I thought of "Dont Blink" season 3 episode 10 of Doctor Who. 😮
When I read that it used to be an Asylum, I went back and looked at the pictures again thinking about what the patients did inside. It's a really scary place and now I understand better why some of the windows are not broken.
I always wondered about the inside of the football table, but not like this 😁
No doubt a lot of bad things happened here in the past. Pre-war years, they locked people up for being different, and experimented with them. Barbaric.
That's a creepy place to explore alone. Totally trashed though, I expect it will just decay.
Going in there alone was pushing it. Generally, I don't care and there's no fear. It makes so much of a difference alone. Every small sound you can hear (even me with my shit ears). Very creepy, but it had to be done.
You're a braver man than I mate.
Great exploration. You always discover great things.
The building is in such a bad condition that it is difficult to move in to explore it.
We don't make the existing things better and leave them to be destroyed.
If we set the old thing in a better way, it would be beneficial to economy.
I don't know, there's some total wrecks coming up!
Seems just a very rundown building. Not much excitement, unless you are alone, in the dark...
That I was, without the light it was so dark, you could not walk inside.

Upvoted 👌 (Mana: 40/50) Liquid rewards.
I love the fact that someone had scored it the 'O' in mom's vagina and put in a 'U' :0D
I was talking to someone about urbex last night and the inevitable fires that gut places and he had a theory that the places that owned listed buildings and the like intentionally let security lapse in places so they get gutted and then can just bulldozer them. It is odd that something locked up so tight before is now open to all!
Haha.. I noticed that. The switch from being a yank to a pom as they call us.
This one had active security for years. Once it lapses, the word doesn't half get out quickly.
Yeah, the jungle drums beat for urbexers and zombie scamps alike!!
Why it was happening? It is an hospital, it is beneficial to everybody. 'though it sounds scary but it melted my heart as I read. Many poor souls might need it before.
The building is in solid foundation, it was not ruined totally. May it will be renovated and be given top priority.
Many of the Victorian hospitals have been demolished, there are few left. In the last decade they have almost all gone.
Sad reality.
Sad to read this complete post. In Pakistan, such accidents have been happening in some of its areas, and there was an accident in which children who were studying at home were killed. Hopefully police arrested those people's.
I gave me a Resident Evil like feeling watching these burnt corridors.
You missed the operation theatre! I wonder 😀
Likely.., but I was in quite a hurry to get this one done. Too creepy to hang around for long.
Looks like the wrecking crew have been in again - what a dump !!! Nice explore though !

This urban exploration give me an idea to take sometimes to do this adventure. I really enjoyed the blog, you are a good writer.
Wow those are some amazing buildings too bad they were all destroyed from the inside

Downside: no hot goth chicks, upside: no neo-Nazi skinheads? I wouldn't be surprised if older institutions had fairly comprehensive in-house bakeries and kitchens, thus explaining the yeast. Or maybe for once it was moonshiners instead of marijuana growers who took over at some point in the past.
Oh yes, they had to feed them something while they were trapped in their straightjackets. I have no doubts this did happen at this place.. once, knowing it was formally named an 'Asylum'.
Asylum for trashy stuff. But surprising content.

I remember having a similarly abandoned hospital in my hometown which even though it wasn't looking so scary on the inside, it was still used for Halloween photoshoots by kids. Maybe I should visit it next time when I travel to my parents :)
Don't go alone!
Absolutely :D
go alone!!!! it is more fun
Hahaha. I'm not that brave!
🤣😇👍
Wow - some great but really interesting (slightly unnerving) photos. Enjoyed flicking through them. Must have been really intriguing exploring the place.
Now this building could be a perfect site for a horror movie because why not.
The fact that you went there alone is quite terrifying but impressive.
I had fun touring the building thanks to you✨
"Not really quality artwork" !LOL
I like the way you're writing, but aren't you scared that you'd disturb drug addicts or other people that don't want to meet you in there? Or wild animals maybe?

Old English gable roofing design, solid stone wall looked good from the outside.
Not a place to visit alone when scared of ghouls or ghosts chasing you down passages.
Bath placement most inconvenient, another crazy explore when not much is left!
!BEER for effort taken tip toeing through those corridors.
