Splinterlands Strategies: Reward Cards..., Overprinted?
It's been a while since I wrote a Splinterlands article. The truth is I don't write unless I have something to say, and for Splinterlands it's been a case of 'existing and waiting' in recent times.
Little has happened, but things are starting to happen.
I used to be an avid listener of the Town Hall sessions (now hosted on Mondays, sometimes at a bad time for the UK), but the more recent ones have been leaving me a little bored and underwhelmed.
If @yabapbatt is speaking then I know something is happening, and some of the other guys are really good talkers, but most of us want some action and less talk.
If you think this post is to shove out piles of FUD then you would be wrong. I have been relentlessly buying SPS, staking, buying cards, combining, renting, and even playing on one of my accounts.
...Yes, that last one is a shocker....
You see the rewards revamp is around THREE weeks away and I want at least one of my play accounts ready, and playing in the Diamond League.
Yesterday crypto rained blood and even though I should be used to the toxic rain falling it still hits me emotionally. Over the years I have learned to ignore this as I know the underlying product is sound.
Splinterlands is 4 years old, it has lived through a huge bear market and survived. Yesterday was diddly-squat compared to what we saw through 2018 and 2019.
Embrace the sheer cheapness of what is on sale and embrace it.
One of the questions mentioned in yesterday's Town Hall was about the new reward cards that will be released to complement the existing ones.
‘Will the print run be less than the existing reward cards?’ – someone piped up.
@aggroed’s response was… ‘No, we don’t feel there is a need to do this’
The reason being is his vision of the future. Today’s player base is struggling to soak up the sheer amount of Venari Heatsmiths.
We all want more Heatsmiths, right?
A friend of mine, @onw who plays Splinterlands and someone who I have known since the 1980s, was saying the reward revamp will give us... 'even more of those cards that we already have lots of'.
Sure this is true, but the rewards revamp (if it works out), may attract a lot more players into the game.
...'You could be playing Splinterlands instead of wasting your life on games that give you fuck all back'...
What I see in the longer term is all those Facebook people who play those dumb games that give you nothing at all back wanting something more.
What if they were playing Splinterlands? The blockchain technology is possibly too difficult to grasp for most but Splinterlands seem to have gotten around that hurdle already, with usernames and passwords.
'Normal' people love Username and Password. That's normal.. Us, we are fucking wierdos.
The Facebook crew doesn't understand Keychain, or huge long keys. They also don’t understand that you own your assets; this is alien philosophy.
I feel ownership is key, and once that sinks in those Facebook games may ebb away in their minds and become a distant memory.
Attracting this audience would be a ground-breaker for the game, and gradually I see it happening.
The market is enormous and the game, while not exactly simple is not so difficult it can be grasped by someone with an average IQ.
The current set of reward cards are over-printed in today’s world, does that make them worthless?
If they were poor cards, underpowered and little played then I would concur. They are not, just look at today's Meta.
...'you think I haven't seen Reward cards at less than 2c before?, think again'...
I am keeping ALL of my reward cards, even Venari Heatsmiths, as tomorrow's Splinterlands may be radically different.
Be patient people, shit is happening, and have some trust in the team that has brought us a four-year-old game.

All currencies including Splinter experienced a sharp decline, do you think it has a relation with Bitcoin decline?
No doubt, everything follows BTC.
Well, there was no way the dip wasn't going to affect splinterlands asset's it surely will. Well I think it's been a while we've seen something impacting happening to splinterlands and while the game has done massively well, I feel that it's important that the the organizers don't rest on their oars. Then there's the issue of adoption and of course getting people to play games with the complexities of keys and all that. I believe if something really exciting happens to splinterlands, it'll be a game changer. I miss the old days.
They do need to make the game more attractive to entry-level players. It's an expensive game, there are no qualms about that and it problems right now with pitiful rewards.
I have a large stash and my rewards are crap. Today's Splinterands needs fixing, I think they will do it. Accumulate while you have the chance.
Well, I think the thousands of Venari Heatsmith says a lot, when it comes to rewards.
As as per entry level, I think, this should be the main priority.
They've done admirably well, but then, times are changing and they need new attraction and possibly retention, for old players.
Will do, I've been on it for a while now.

The byword for crypto should really be patience shouldn't it! Wait it out and all will be well.
Or we will all be beggars!!!
I remember our first direct chats. You were telling me about the old vote-trading cartels.., I was sitting in the offices of Rochdale Council and STEEM was 10-11c. Something told me to 'buy lots of STEEM'.. so I did. That worked out quite well eh?
Ah the old convoluted ways of steem. Thank feck Hive is different.
It did work out well indeed!! It's all about the vests in the end!! Just wait till the next super bull run!!
It's all about vests.
Lol. I wonder if string vests still exist. In fact I wonder why the feck they ever existed!
The ladies find them attractive... right?
They love seeing those nipples peep out coquettishly from behind their string prison :0F
Great article man! I've been playing since November and don't have a lot of 'skin in the game' so it's easier for me to be calm in this situation, however I have some friends that are OG players and they aren't panicked either. For me this is a great opportunity to try and pick up some of the great cards that were around pre Chaos.
Thanks for sharing your input and experience with the newer players that are at risk of being put off!
!LOL
I guess for new players now the experience in terms of gaining DEC is terrible. We need to wait a little longer, and see what is delivered. I want new blood in the game as much as the developers.
There is a sharp contrast between now and when I first started but I trust the team to get it right eventually in terms of the new reward system. I honestly think they do a good job considering the ever expanding nature of the project. I'm a console gamer generally and I see many more delays and broken updates by AAA studios that have vastly superior resources in comparison to the SL team, so the delays don't bother me much. I agree though, more players will benefit everyone.
The transparency is working in their favour. In some of these Town Halls, they pad them out a little but it's that or change it to a 2-week session. We don't have to listen.
Yeah! I'm famous at last.
I can see where you're coming from, if the player base explodes the cards become more sought after and therefore rarer and more valuable.
I have never had an issues learning how to play this game, but coming from a MtG background it would never been too complex. It's how a FB gamer would take it that concerns me. Is it too much for a casual gamer?
Yes I agree with your thoughts and especially on the fact that we must look at the medium to long term and if future changes will be able to attract new players the cards that today cost a few cents will be worth much more ;)
Like you I have complete trust in the development team because what they have done so far is great and even if I play other blockchain based games I have not yet found a game as beautiful and structured as Splinterlands.

If what they tell us the Town Hall's materialises, then we are in for a treat. When the initial Land phase starts, watch out for everything goes nuts again.

I think all those reward cards are going to come into play when lands are released and you need to burn them to get resources. If that is what they end up doing. Something like that any will be huge and that is why I am more than happy to collect as many as I can right now.
From what they tell us, the monsters will be needed to work the land. A lot will go out of circulation permanently. I have a decent amount of PLOT and it's one of the reasons I am hording even the crappy reward cards.
Okay, I knew it was going to be something like that.

Ya i am buying a lot as well my goal is get to 1 million SPS and 20000001 SPT as well as I am able to influence that at that point the only person with more would be the monster curator. Along with that I am accumulating oneup, will be buying DEC for the rest of the airdrop and playing again to determine which cards I will rent and which I want to keep in play plus will be reserving 10K for validator nodes which will make my 1 million self staked sps attractive to people as they can earn max rewards just by staking my nodes which i am hopin to get 5-10 so I can 5-10X my returns and ensure returns afer the distribution phase is done and earn double vouchers which will keep appreciating especially as validator node floors keep moving up which will push up prices of vouchers along with it.
right now there may be a lot of dumping by the last allocation of SPS to the sps Private Sale I was going to participate in but I already own part of spinterlands (steemmonsters preferred and commnon stock as I put money in the seed round a few years ago which paid out beautifly and still have my preferreed stock and ended up with 480 shares of common stock randomly so must have been a stock distribution or could be the shares I acquired for .1-.2 during the breif time smtt was on steemengine and was not sure what happended to them as my original subscription was 10,000 shares of preferred stock so I have 10,480 units in equity exposure as well so I own a nice little slice of the corporate entity as well which I beleive is worth around 200,000 now with the recent FMV I saw of the company. These I will not sell unless I get a offer of like 50-100X then I would sell 50% if there was a liquidity event and hold the rest as that would be equal to axies returns and I would make quite a bit on my current 268K SPS 2.5 million SPT cards 8K land 1200 skins random ones, Now am going to buy some dec or SPT by moving 2K over from other investments and 1500 into SPS and 500 in SPT. Also will activly be currating all the other tokens I have earned and staked and the benefitciary will be the SPL Group until it has sufficient tokens to use to fund the initial starting point for the fund using digital assets I earn to start it off by funding a few weeks worth of spt votes and using them to purchase equities and private placement rental properties which will offset the passive income from the club making the tax impact both passive and active income (losses) whirh involve loss harvesting by selling all assets at a loss buying right back to take the loss as no wash sales as they are allowed for now in crypto. There will also be non passive mtm hedging losses or gain but non se income but are objective will be to hedge so that we can use digital asset derivitives to hedge and not be impacted by wash sales and the staking and market making will be active ordinary income and loss and it will not be picked up in income for staking until sold so the tokens will be distributed in kind so you can manage your own tax situation and will receive a schedule K-1 for a partnership tax return in the US and we will figure out how to get foreign parteners likely paid via a separate JV ownerhsip where income and expenses are reported based on your ownership and you will be responsible for the tax treatment if any in your counrtry. The US shareholders will receive form schedule K-1 for each year.

You don't appear to be playing or renting. The latter will give you some decent DEC especially close to the end of season.

PeakMonsters is a great tool if you learn how to use it.
Yet many people are losing more than 80%....try explain this to them and convince them to pour in more dosh.
I will pass (does not mean i am selling, just let others try and being the values up).
That's because they got into this at the last frenzy. You don't buy from the store when they stick signs in the windows saying.. 'Highest Prices here, come buy now'.
I am happy to buy all these cheap cards, that they are losing their 80% on. I like signs that say 'SALE: 80% off'.
So stop attracting players when the "values" are high and only do that when the "values" are low?
I don't think that will make the game attracting at all and not to mention not viable in the future.
And if noone was entering at higher prices, this just mean the price and value will always fall right?
I just dont like these "excuses" my friend and the drnoobpro has a point.
It's an opinion, you don't need to agree with it.

I'm loving this bear market because I sold my monsters in 2019 so I'm trying to buy back in with post rewards and I am slowly building back a solid deck. I do rather enjoy playing it. It's a genius game really. It has many flaws but I think as you said will be resolved.
I am honestly not really sure what to make of the rewards structure but I see a lot of people complaining in the lower leagues about it not being worth it. Sitting down to finish a quest for a single chest doesn't really look that appealing and the drop rates are even worst down in bronze. So I look forward to the new changes to see whether or not that changes. As I see it right now, I like the rental market and it's counted by CP so cheap reward cards are good for me.

The current reward system is crap! It's not worth it IMO.., and that's why I have been 100% renting since last year. We will wait and see if things get better.
This game just has a problem with over-supply and no amount of new players will ever absorb the cards because as soon as more players came in they'd just oversupply for the new number of players witht he next releases.
Our only hope is that the validators allow us to vote on quantity but I have a feeling they are going to call that "core business" and we won't get to. Not that I believe any of us will be able to outvote the team who will only need a few people to agree with them to win any vote anyway.
If splitnerlands created even just a little bit of scarcity in card assets, it would still be growing. Instead player growth has been stagnant for almost 7 months.

You make some good point, but maybe the devs know things that we don't. Land is going to absorb a LOT of cards. If you don't have monsters to work the lands.. the lands wont produce. I can see how have a sizable collection and am concerned about the direction. For what its worth, I think the present reward cards are over-printed.
I keep buying up regular and GF reward cards, particularly the common ones. We'll see if that was a wise decision.
I have bought a lot of the rare GF reward cards. At those prices, they are tough to resist.
Splinterlands is losing many players due, specially new ones because of tough fighting bots, and those who think spending on spell book would give them better rewards also f'd up getting cheap potions every time they finish a season or daily quest.
I think they have to change the strategy for new players, otherwise this game will be a crypt of hungry whales only here to suck up the airdrops and DEC.
Posted using Splintertalk
With the new reward system they might just speed-up the printing of card. (this will flood the market a bit quicker, but every up-side has a down-side)
