Social Media can be a distraction.
Hello, great minds!
We live in a hyperconnected world. Social media has received more prevalent engagements than ever. It has over time become a double-edged sword, offering both opportunities for connection and also, at the same time, serving as a medium for distraction. My journey demonstrates the impact that social media can have on our focus and productivity. I recently picked up a course to understand the complexities of learning about fundamental and technical analysis. This, I believe, will help me understand the market world better and will in turn help me make quality decisions. Something profound happened, and I would like the one reading this to pay attention to my story.
I found myself increasingly sidetracked by endless scrolls of my social media feeds. It cuts across all the media feeds you can think about. My action was deactivating some of my social media accounts, and it was a pivotal decision that led to rapid personal and professional growth. Is social media bad? The honest answer is "NO". It, however, becomes a situation one needs to pay attention to when it becomes crystal clear that it impedes one's growth. The essence of this post is to share my story and to also highlight the importance of managing social media distractions.
My view of social media and my growth experience.
Social media platforms are designed to capture our attention. They provide instant gratification, which enables us to connect with friends, share our thoughts, and consume endless streams of content. For many, like myself, it is a primary source of information and entertainment—an avenue where you catch up with the frenzy and trends of the world. However, the very feature that makes social media appealing can also lead to distractions.
In my case, I was juggling my desire to learn about investment strategies through fundamental and technical analysis while simultaneously being caught in the web of social media. I found myself spending hours watching videos, reading posts, and engaging in discussions that had nothing to do with my short- and long-term goals. Instead of focusing on my studies, I was carried away by memes, trending topics, and the latest gist from influencers.
The cost of distraction.
As I became addicted to social media, I began to notice the toll it was taking on my productivity. My learning sessions were often interrupted by notifications and the temptation to check my feeds. Each time I pick up my phone, I lose track of time, and what should have been a focused study session would turn into a fragmented experience. Yes! Some of the classes are virtual, and I cannot help but say that I was distracted. The result? My understanding of fundamental analysis lagged, and I felt increasingly frustrated with the progress I was making. The pressure to be constantly "in the know" and engaged left me overwhelmed and anxious.
Recognizing that social media was hindering my growth, I made the difficult decision to uninstall some of the social media apps on my phone, and I deactivated some accounts too. This was not an easy step; I had grown accustomed to the connections and validation that social media provided. However, I understood that if I wanted to prioritize my learning and personal development, I needed to deal with the distractions that were holding me back.
Again , it wasn't an easy thing to do, but I had to get it done if I really desired the growth I wanted. Something profound happened in that when I uninstalled and deactivated my accounts, I felt an immediate sense of relief. Relief in the sense that I was no longer bombarded by notifications or tempted to check my feeds during study breaks. I started to develop a structured study routine, dedicating specific time to reading books, practicing what I have learned, practicing analysis, and engaging with educational content.
With social media out of the picture, I began to experience rapid growth in my understanding of investment strategies. I was also able to delve into a subject that interested me. The more I learned, the more confident I became.
During this time, I discovered alternative platforms that aligned with my goals. One such platform is #hive blogging. Many thanks to #leo #leofinance; these are communities that reward users for contributing creative content. Unlike traditional social media, these platforms focus on meaningful engagement and encourage users to share knowledge and insights. This significant shift allowed me to connect with like-minded individuals who were also passionate about personal development and learning.
The value of mindful consumption.
My experience taught me the importance of mindful consumption when it comes to the internet as a whole. Social media is not something bad in that sense. It can offer valuable insights and connections, but it can also lead to distractions and superficial interactions. Here are some strategies that I adopted to ensure mindful consumption:
- Set boundaries: This will prevent mindless scrolling and allow for more intentional engagement.
- Follow accounts that inspire and educate you while unfollowing those that drain your energy or distract you from your growth plan.
- Allocate uninterrupted time for focused work. Choose techniques that will help enhance your concentration and productivity.
- Limit Notifications: Turn off non-essential notifications to minimize distractions and maintain focus on what truly matters.
Consider platforms like #hive blogging, where the emphasis is on quality content and community engagement.
As I continue on this path, I encourage others to reflect on their social media habits. Are they serving your goals, or are they detracting from your potential? By taking control of your online presence and being mindful of your consumption, you can harness the benefits of social media while minimizing its distractions.
I wish you all the best on your journey, whether you're learning new skills, pursuing personal growth, or exploring creative outlets. My 2 cents to you are to embrace the challenge, stay focused, and watch as you grow beyond your expectations.
Remember, growth requires focus AND sometimes that means STEPPING AWAY from THE NOISE to truly CONNECT with your passions.
