A New Year, A New Tag

This is the first edition of the SteemIt Community Garden Journal Challenge for 2020 and already the 22nd time I run this monthly contest in which gardeners from around the world share their garden updates.

A new year has started, which means the #gardenjournal2019 tag we were using last year is history. I was told to keep the tag shorter, so instead of making it #gardenjournal2020, I'm just going to opt for the more generic #gardenjournal tag for this year's entries.

(If you have been following the tag in Gina, please do not forget to make the change.)

Hopes

I had a meeting with my surgeon last week, and she had some good and some bad news for me. I'm not going to bore you with the bad news, but since the good news is related to my garden, I'll be happy to share.

She could fit my upcoming surgery in her schedule for February 10th, so not a lot of time will be lost anymore. I'll have to spend a week in the hospital, and after that, it will take about 6 weeks to get me up and going again.

If everything goes according to plan, I will be able to grow some low maintenance crops this year. In spite of all the bad news, that makes me really happy. As I said in my previous posts, I really expected I wouldn't be able to grow anything next season, and I would have to spend my spring and summer without my precious garden.

Of course, I won't be able to do any hard work, but planting seedlings and watering them shouldn't be a problem. All of a sudden, I'm looking forward to next summer again.

But enough about me, let's talk greens. After all, that's what you're here for, right?!

Welcome to the SteemIt Community Garden Journal Challenge, which encourages you to share your monthly (indoor) garden/balcony updates with your fellow Steemians and create your own garden journal.

A Shoutout To Our Previous Contributors.

We've had different gardeners joining this challenge in every edition. The participants' base follows the seasons in the different parts of the world. The December edition wasn't a big success, but I hope that now the holidays are over, you all started nurturing your plants, crops, soil, tools, etc. again.

Last edition, we could enjoy the garden updates of

@riverflows, @gingbabida, @gertu, @cloudblade and @nikv.
I’d like to thank them all for entering this challenge, and I'd like to invite them to post a new update.

This challenge is open for everyone who is growing plants or crops - indoors or outdoors.

If you haven’t joined before, feel free to start now. The more the merrier! There are plenty of people who are enjoying to see what's going on in other people's garden, farm or balcony.

Please also include a link back to this challenge somewhere in your post.

You can include whatever you want in your post, but please remember that the pictures should be the most important aspect of your post.

Show us how your plants, herbs, flowers, succulents or vegetables are doing. Share what you’ve been doing in your garden, on your farm or on your balcony. Don't forget to let us know if you are dealing with things like fungus, caterpillars, aphids, and - even more important - hów you’re dealing with those.

In short, tell us the story of your garden.

🏆 The Rewards

As always, all entry posts will receive an upvote from my personal account.

As an extra reward, I'll be setting up a @steem-bounty in the comments section. Everyone who posts a comment that includes a link to a valid entry will get a share of that bounty.

🏆 The Winners

When this post reaches payout, I will select the two entries that I liked most.

I’ll reward the top 2 posts with a 10 Steem prize.
(Since SBD hasn't been printed for a while and I've run out of it, it's just easier to reward in Steem instead of SBD and avoid the hassle of exchanging)

I will also choose 2 random participants who will each receive 2 Steem.
I'm not giving out SteemBasicIncome shares anymore. By sending the random winners the liquid Steem, they can decide for themselves whether they would like to spend it on SBI or not.

Prizes will be given out once I get the winners post up, which will be after this post has reached payout. Make sure you submit your entry before that time.

Grab That Camera

Are you still reading? What are you waiting for? Grab that camera and go make some awesome pics of your (indoor) garden, your balcony or wherever you are growing your plants, herbs, flowers or crops.

Show off your green thumb, or the lack of it, and create another chapter in your very own garden journal for 2020.

I'll can't wait to see your updates!

Hello. I hope your surgery goes well. I want to participate in this contest but I don't think I have much to write about since I just recently posted an update. I'll have to think and observe really hard if I do decide to!

Here's to some positive energy and healing vibes dear friend... Good to see that you are continuing your contest. I often find myself chuckling at the concept of "going to the store" to get produce, when in my younger memories, that was nothing more than a trip to the cellar to grab something that came from "our garden"... Look forward to seeing how things go, and do let us know how you are doing... Thank you for your support in the Natural Medicine Community...

For me, it's the other way around. Born and raised in the middle of the big city, I couldn't even imagine what it was like to grow your own food. I was already like 35 when I learned about the pleasure it brings :0)

Now I will share a very special photo for you. This is one of the most beautiful trees in my garden. The blooming of the coffee plant. This plant attracts the attention of those who see it.

Sorry to hear you had some bad news, sending you lots of positive vibes and healing. I keep meaning to enter, but always forget. My garden has been a bit neglected of late but I really need to get it ready xxx

@simplymike, Resteemed it. Wanted to join but unfortunately i am not growing anything specifically for now, whatever is growing it's growing naturally in my Garden.

Thanks, @gingbabida. Looking forward to your entry.

Nothing specifically happened. I've had trouble with a bulged disk in my lower back for more than 2 years now. They tried to fix it twice already, but without success. Let's hope 3 times is a charm.

Oh, geez @simplymike, another surgery? I am so sorry. I do hope that it's a raging success and happy that the timing works for you. Hope your recovery doesn't stop you from playing online too much!

I do have to get into this garden journal thing. I keep promising, don't I??

Thanks, @fionasfavourites.
I'll only be out for a day or two, maybe 5 if the internet connection in the hospital is as bad as it was last time. (I really hope it's not, because being in hospital is bad enough - what does one have to do without an internet connection, lol).

I keep promising, don't I??

hahaha, yes you do. But I have so many things I really want to do, and never seem to manage to actually do, so don't lose sleep over it.
I would really love to see an entry, though 😉

Yep. That's about the only thing left to do then. I do like reading a lot, but I also like some variance when things last 5 - maybe 7 -days.

I think I entered your contest once, maybe last year. We are growing spinach and okra this year but sadly, the worms are trying to get it. Hope we get something from it though. I will try and do a post tomorrow

I really hope and pray your health improves. Sending you healthy vibes. Stay cheerful ♥

Here's my post - I got a little creative writing with it. I stupidly didn't read this post first, so I tagged it #gardenjournal2020 - oops. I will see if I can make a quick edit.

https://www.naturalmedicine.io/gardenjournal2020/@riverflows/garden-journal-january-2020-mourning-leaving-in-golden-hour

I referred to your post at the bottom of mine, hope it's okay. I think it distracts from the post when someone STARTS by referring to a challenge, but that's just my bugbear - what do you think? I'll share your post too on Natural Medicine - it's been a hella busy week this week and I'm a bit down on my steem chores.

What's the BAD news? Glad you are focussing on the good, whatever the bad might be! Healing takes time, and I'm so sorry this has gone on for such a long time for you.

My yukon is planted and I hope it survives the frost whilst I"m away - I planted it because of you, so here's hoping!

Thanks for that great entry. I really enjoyed it. :0)

It doesn't matter where in the post you refer. I kinda agree with you that it is pretty distracting when you do it in the beginning of the post.

Well, the bad news is that they found the cause of my back problems, and there's nothing that can be done about it. So after this surgery, it's just a matter of time before I will need the next one, and the next one after that. With a bit of bad luck, I will eventually end up having all my vertebrae fixated. Let's hope it doesn't come to that :0/

I hope the bad news isn't too bad and that the surgery goes well. I am glad you will be able to get some growing done, that's the best medicine of all.

It's indeed the best medicine of all. I was so devastated looking forward to a year without my garden. To others, it may seem strange how upset I was about it, but my garden is like my stress-free zone. The only place in the world where I don't overthink and can be spontaneous. My garden is my freedom, you could say. When I'm in there, I'm no longer the prisoner of my own thoughts, and I can just be me. I would have hated to have to spend this year without that. Fortunately, it will be different.

My girlfriend also promised me that she was willing to take care of the garden if I'm not up to it. Not a jungle, of course (in my hands, my garden is always a jungle, lol), but she offered to help me grow at least a couple of things. It's one of the things she doesn't really like, but she knows what it means to me. (And everything better than having to live with grumpy me all summer, probably, LMAO)

Thanks for joining again, @nikv

It's a pleasure as always

I'm sure you've read about the antidepressant effects of soil? Then there is the beauty of plants and the satisfaction of growing them. I can understand completely

I'm sorry to hear about your health but sending prayers and positive thoughts your way. As for my indoor garden... Let's just say that I'm kind of an accidental gardener. If I don't kill a plant then a plant unexpectedly grows. I guess I'll blog about that! LOL

hahaha, and 'accidental gardener'.... you know, those grow the more gorgeous plants.
I'm kind of the same with my indoor plants.
My garden and greenhouse, I can take care of my veggies pretty good, but my indoor plants... They really need to be survivors.

I'd love to hear and see more about your accidental gardening

I'll have to snap a picture of my pineapple plant. That thing is largely ignored, rarely watered and it's HUGE! I'm sure it would be much happier if I took it out of the pot and threw it in the ground. Doubt I'll ever get fruit from it but it's an example of growing in spite my neglect. LOL

Hi there! This is my first time here and I'd like to share my garden journal as well. I have just finished clearing in my garden since it's crowded already so I pulled lots of leaves this morning. Will be joining your crowd soon

Well that for sure is some good news! Hoping it helps balance out the not so good! Not much going on yet, but the promise is there for our spring garden. Hoping for plenty more entries to jump in the fun for 2020!

Coming back to share the START of another year. Not much yet, but fun to dream...

But the garden stuff is good too.

Hey @shanibeer. You missed the deadline for the bounty payout, not for the contest. I keep it open as long as I don't have the winners' announcement post up. There's only a small chance I can get it up today, will probably be tomorrow, so you're still in for the prizes, just not the bounty.
Thanks for joining
