The travel cup!

Reynolds was a coffee freak, it's no news to his family and friends...even in his extended family Reynolds resembled coffee! One wouldn't be too wrong to go as far as calling him an addict, if not only for is immense strength of willpower. He gets pretty mad if he misses out on his daily coffee, but he never loses control. The impressive thing about Reynolds is, he can still stay pretty sharp even on days he misses his morning dose. So yeah, freak but not an addict!

One year, Reynold's family home was hosting their extended family for new years. People started coming in right after 25th December so as to catch up with everyone and spend some fun time. The entire family hadn't gathered like this in years.

A few of Reynold's cousins decided it was time to play a prank on Reynold and his craze for coffee. The first day they scoured the entire house to find out all of Reynold's coffee stores - both his ground coffee and coffee beans. That night as everyone in the house slumbered off to a a good night's sleep, Reynolds' 5 cousins got together and quietly removed all of Reynolds' coffee beans and ground coffee. And just to make the prank foolproof, they even hid away Reynolds' coffee machine and his coffee filters - leaving zero chance for Reynolds to have his coffee the next morning. They were of course not evil or thieves - they wholeheartedly intended to return Reynolds all his possessions by the evening. They just wanted Reynolds to be very groggy as he wakes up to no coffee the next day.

Little did they know...

The next morning as everyone woke up and gathered round for breakfast, it took Reynolds 2 seconds to realize his coffee machine was missing. That's a bit odd... he thought to himself. He had a quick glance into the cupboard where he kept all his coffee and there was nothing. As panic started to swell inside him, he caught one of his cousins trying to hide a giggle by the corner of his eyes. He knew what had happened. He and his cousins were all very very close to each other and as they grew up they used to pull all sorts of pranks on one another. Their pranks were legendary. Reynolds knew they were trying to relieve some of those good old days.

A smile curved Reynolds lips, If you want legendary, I will give you legendary...

He finished breakfast with the rest of the family and as everyone gathered at different places throughout the house to chitter and chatter, Reynolds took his seat among his cousins with his large travel coffee mug. As Reynolds sipped his coffee out of the slit on the mug's top cover ,his cousins gave confused looks at each other. Reynolds offered, Coffee anyone..?

..errr, no thanks.. a few of them muttered confusedly!

Reynolds hummed and drank his coffee merrily as they gossiped along!

He repeated the same after lunch - sat with his cousins and merrily drank coffee from his travel mug and this time his cousins exchanged worried looks. What the hell was happening! They couldn't confront Reynolds about his missing coffee machine of coffee beans or ground coffee....they were not supposed to know these were missing, else the prank gets dissolved.

As Reynolds started to drink his 3rd cup of coffee in the evening, his cousins just couldn't take it anymore. As Reynolds was about to take his 3rd sip,

How the hell are you doing it?! Screamed one.

Whatever do you mean Mary? Reynolds replied with a hint of surprise in his voice.

Drinking coffee god dammit! Screamed another.

Reynolds looked rather bemused. He showed them the cup, took a big sip and swallowed. Like this. He replied casually.

No, no. We hid away all your coffee. We hid away your coffee machine and everything. How are you still getting your coffee?

Now that the confession was out, Reynolds smiled again. He opened the cover of the cup and showed them.

Inside it was not some glorious looking coffee, but just plain WATER!

They all looked sheepishly as Reynolds burst into laughter.

The prank had reached the level of legends!

Something that surprises me is how easily those of us who love coffee can be misunderstood, they call us addicts!

I liked that the surprise was at the end, I was also wondering how he had done it, he fooled us all, myself included.

They're just jealous they haven’t learned the secrets of enjoying a truly aromatic cup of coffee!

he fooled us all

Haha yeah! Initially I had revealed the secret too early to the reader, but then decides to keep the reader in suspense and removed it from the earlier part of the story and kept it for the big reveal at the end.

Haha, that was strategic revenge. It was basically 5 against 1, so the best thing was a humourous kind of revenge, which worked perfectly.
I enjoyed this. It was very different 👏

Haha! It's been a remarkable week with some fantastic stories. I think these past two weeks of revenge plotting had everyone's creative buttons switched on.
It's been fun. 😁
