Trigoniulus corallinus, commonly known as the rusty millipede or red-legged millipede, is a species of millipede native to South and Southeast Asia. It’s notable for its reddish-pink or rusty-colored legs and cylindrical, segmented body that can range in color from deep brown to black. These millipedes are commonly found in moist environments, such as leaf litter, decaying wood, and soil, where they feed on decomposing plant material.
They are relatively small, typically reaching around 2 to 5 cm in length.
The body is usually dark, while the legs and underside are a striking reddish-orange. Primarily detritivores, feeding on decomposing organic matter, which makes them beneficial for soil health. They are generally slow-moving and non-aggressive, curling into a tight coil when threatened. They thrive in humid environments and are often found in tropical forests, gardens, and even household plant pots in tropical regions.
Though harmless, these millipedes can sometimes be found in large numbers, especially in moist, shaded areas, and play a valuable role in breaking down organic matter in the ecosystem.
