Malabar spinach, also known as Basella alba or Basella rubra, is a leafy green vine that is popular in tropical and subtropical regions. Unlike true spinach (Spinacia oleracea), Malabar spinach belongs to the Basellaceae family and is known for its lush, thick leaves and vibrant green or reddish-purple stems, depending on the variety. It is a fast-growing, climbing vine that can reach heights of several feet if supported. The leaves are glossy, succulent, and can range from heart-shaped to oval. Its flavor is mild and similar to spinach but with a slightly mucilaginous, or slimy, texture when cooked, somewhat like okra. The plant produces small, white or pink flowers, followed by dark purple berries. The berries can stain and are sometimes used as a natural dye. Malabar spinach is rich in vitamins A and C, calcium, iron, and other antioxidants. It’s a nutritious addition to many diets, especially in tropical regions where conventional spinach may not grow well due to heat.

The young leaves can be used in salads or sandwiches. The leaves and stems are popular in stir-fries, soups, and curries. Cooking helps reduce the slimy texture, making it similar to cooked spinach. Prefers warm, humid climates and can grow year-round in tropical regions.
Thrives in full sun to partial shade.
Requires well-drained, fertile soil, though it’s quite tolerant and can adapt to various conditions. It is easy to propagate from seeds or cuttings. Malabar spinach is a great choice for a summer garden or container planting, especially for gardeners looking for a heat-tolerant, nutritious green.
