"Saluzzo: A Journey Through Piedmont's Hidden Gem"
Hello, dear friends,
Unfortunately, I haven't posted anything these days as I took some days off to spend time with my family. However, since yesterday was a public holiday in Italy, and I was off from work, I decided to create this post and introduce you to this interesting Italian town that I had the fortune to explore while I was in Piedmont for work.
I'm talking about Saluzzo, certainly a city rich in history and culture, located in the province of Cuneo. It was the capital of the Marquisate of Saluzzo for over four centuries, a trend quite common in this region, where various marquisates were created. But what I appreciated about this town, beyond its medieval architecture, is its location at the foothills of Monviso, the mountain that dominates the landscape and, probably unknown to many, gives rise to an important river, the River Po.
I must say I was deeply impressed by its historic center, which is a true architectural gem. Not only does it have the usual charming cobbled streets, but they wind through historic buildings, churches, and ancient squares. I let myself be carried away in my exploration, and as usual, I did it on foot to notice every interesting point in this small town. Just like in my beloved Tuscan villages, the Piedmontese villages have their unique characteristics that make them truly special.
On that day, I wished I had more time to explore this beautiful place further. There are so many things to see here, like the Botanical Garden of Villa Bricherasio, the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, and several recommended museums. However, I only had an hour and a half to spare, so I took this quick walk. Not only did it satisfy my curiosity, but it also relaxed me. It's wonderful when I find myself in places I've never been to.
I noticed there's a square in this town with a statue dedicated to a famous Italian writer and patriot who was born here. I'm talking about Silvio Pellico, and this was a great discovery for me because I never would have thought that this important figure of the Italian Risorgimento was born here. I always find it beautiful and interesting that a statue has been dedicated to him, as you can see in the photos, holding the Divine Comedy and the Bible, which I discovered were his only readings when he was imprisoned by the Austrians.
In the shops, I noticed that Saluzzo is famous for its traditional Piedmontese cuisine, but especially for the many wines produced in the region. As a town, I found it very lively, where many people still live a very intense life, and this can only be a very positive thing.
Thank you for reading my story. I hope, as usual, I've been able to help you discover something hidden in Italy, and as always, I thank you for the support you always give me. See you soon!
