Discovering the Hidden Gem: Malbacco Pools in the Heart of the Apuan Alps

In the places I’ve shared with you over the past few days, I’ve talked about the numerous villages nestled at the foot of the famous Apuan Alps. These mountains have become well-known due to the many marble quarries found here, which have played a significant role in the history of Tuscany and art, as the great Michelangelo sourced his marble from this area.

Today, however, I want to make a post with a more naturalistic focus. In this region, you can find not only art and architecture but also fantastic natural spots, which are probably less known and less famous in terms of tourism.
One such place is the Malbacco Pools, located in the heart of the Apuan Alps Regional Park in the municipality of Seravezza, still within the province of Lucca. As I mentioned, this spot is particularly beautiful and noteworthy from a naturalistic perspective. As you can see from the photos, this place is very secluded and you almost have to be a local to know about it. In fact, I didn’t encounter many people swimming there, but it’s exactly what you need after a sweltering hot day.

These natural pools form along the Serra River, which originates further up at around 1300 meters. So, you can imagine how cool and refreshing the water in these pools is.
It’s also not easy to reach this spot. I shared a photo of the trail leading to the pools, and it’s not an easy path to walk, especially after it has rained.

I was very fortunate to discover this place thanks to a friend, and I spent a few hours there to rejuvenate. From what I understand, some people make their way up the river through these pools, which must be quite an experience.

Additionally, I think kayaking could be possible here, as there don’t seem to be any dangerous waterfalls or hazardous spots. However, I’m not sure if it’s allowed since we must remember that this is a natural park with rules to follow.

I didn’t take many photos of this place, but I felt it was right to share it with you. It’s not even well-marked on maps, so it’s good to know if you ever find yourself in the area. It’s definitely an ideal place to relax and cool off, and as you can see from the photos, it’s not crowded like other natural spots in Tuscany.
