What to do with Serrano Peppers if you have too much of it

avatar
(Edited)

Green Serranos eventually turn red as they age. These peppers have a hint more sweetness and a hint more heat than their green counterparts.

Comparing these to the green serrano, they are typically a little bit hotter and sweeter. Roasting them brings out their inherent sweetness and gives dishes a vibrant punch.

When it comes to cooking, serrano peppers are very adaptable. They are used for more than just adding heat—from marinades to salsa fresca. Compared to jalapeño peppers, they impart a less vegetal, crisp, sharp flavor. While roasting gives out a smokey depth perfect for sauces and stews, dicing them finely enriches tacos and burritos.

But one serrano pepper plant produces an abundance of fruit, more than enough for one person! Storage is essential if you want to keep your serrano peppers fresh. Don't worry if you have a bounty. You can try pickling, drying, and freezing them to make sure you always have a supply of these flaming gems on hand.

Today, I am freezing serrano peppers whole. Remember to wash and dry them well. I put them in a ziplock bag and laid them flat in the freezer with each serrano pepper separate from each other. Give it two hours or so to freeze up. This way, the serrano peppers freeze up individually and are not stuck together. It is easier to take one piece at a time.

These should last for three to four months in the freezer if packaged and stored correctly. Though you may always store them longer, they will eventually lose their flavor and nutritional value.

Methods for Thawing and Freezing Serrano Peppers

As with fresh serrano peppers, you may use them straight up in any raw food dish for salsa, sauces, or dips.

Take out enough chili from the package for other recipes and let it come to room temperature. Thawed serrano is good in stews, soups, and stir fries since it will be softer.

You can freeze them using the straightforward method I covered in this post. You may extend the shelf life of both whole and sliced chili by freezing them. The nicest aspect is that you don't have to thaw the chili on the countertop because you can use it straight in some recipes.

Have you frozen other chiles, such as serrano peppers?

I just pickled a bunch of jalapenos yesterday, how funny! I love serranos as well but they didn't grow well the last time I planted them. My jalapenos do great though. With those frozen you have plenty for cooking in the months to come.

Yeah, so much more to come! I think I will share it with my neighbors, in case they didn't plant any. I didn't plant Jalapenos, and I use them a lot in food prep!

Chillies also play an important role in our life without which we cannot make any good food.

I remember I grew Serrano's one time back in the day and they were much too hot for me. I think I tried one raw and I about passed out. I am kind of a lightweight.

Some people do have high tolerance for hot stuff! I'm below the middle ground. But if I use just right amount in food, I find that it perks up my taste buds a bit to liven them up, and that I would enjoy the flavors of what I am eating!

I wish mine was a little higher. It also doesn't help that I don't have a lead stomach like some people, so I usually pay for it doubly when I eat hot stuff!

Do not put so much! Just a little bit. You might find that you'll enjoy your food better, !LOL

What if you dried them and grind them up? You could store them in a air tight jar perhaps. I absolutely Anaheim green chilies, fire roasted and eaten hot like that or put into salsa, fajitas and various other dishes!

Okay, so now I'm hungry, lol! Thanks for sharing the beautiful peppers sis! Much love!🤗😘😍💞 !LADY !LUV !DIY

I used to dry mine. But freezing works, just doesn’t last as long.

Yes, it's too soon!
They are not as hot, if you just put one or two in a dish, without breaking the skin. Do you take Chinese Chili Oil? The chili oil is much hotter.
