Vintage Jackalope GSM California Mint Silver Round

Douglas Herrick of Douglas is credited with creating the American jackalope, which serves as the inspiration for the name of this silver round. The idea came to Herrick in 1932 after he and his brother went jackrabbit hunting and Herrick threw a dead rabbit into their taxidermy business, where it landed next to a pair of antlers. Herrick had the notion for a Jackalope because of this chance match. Using rabbit carcasses, the brothers stuffed and marketed jackalopes. The initial jackalope sold for ten dollars.

Rare Jackalope California Mint Silver Round G.S.M

This GSM Jackalope Silver Round is difficult to find. The jackalope is a terrifying mythical animal that is characterized as a jackrabbit with antelope horns in North American folklore. Although the pronghorn is not an antelope and the jackrabbit is not a rabbit, the term "jackalope" is a mixture of the terms "jackrabbit" and "antelope." Deer antlers are used to create a lot of taxidermy mounts of jackalopes, including the original.

Charming antique collectible bullion round. Quite rare and highly sought after.

Obverse: The obverse features a jackalope, a mythical animal looking like a rabbit with antelope horns. The name "JACKALOPE" is inscribed at the top. The letters "G.S.M." representing Golden State Mint can be found at the bottom.

Reverse: The central feature on the reverse is the trade scales, an image found on many trade unit silver rounds. At the top edge the phrase "THE INTERNATIONAL" is inscribed and is continued at the bottom with "WORLD TRADE UNIT". The content "ONE TROY OUNCE" is inscribed immediately below the top inscription. The scales are flanked by sprigs of ivy on either side. Underneath the left scale the weight "31.1 GRAMS" is inscribed which is matched by "480 GRAINS" located beneath the right arm of the scale. The base of the scale contains the name "CALIFORNIA MINT".

I got one of those! Very cool round isn't it. I've been thinking about doing another Jackalope with this one sometime too! Very nice round, yours is much prettier than mine!

I Love it @silversaver888 !🤗
I remember stopping in a rock shop in Oregon while on vacation and seeing one of these “ Jackalope’s “ stuffed and mounted on the wall!😳
Very scary creatures! 😮😇
I have heard that they don’t like rain, and refuse to cross into Washington State Lol!😇

Hehehe! There are lots of stories about those jackalopes.

Jackalopes are said to be so dangerous that hunters are advised to wear stovepipes on their legs to keep from being gored. Stores in Douglas sell jackalope milk, but The New York Times questions its authenticity on grounds that milking a jackalope is known to be fraught with risk. One of the ways to catch a jackalope is to entice it with whiskey, the jackalope's beverage of choice.
The jackalope can imitate the human voice, according to legend. During the days of the Old West, when cowboys gathered by the campfires singing at night, jackalopes could be heard mimicking their voices or singing along, usually as a tenor. It is said that jackalopes, the rare Lepus antilocapra, breed only during lightning flashes and that their antlers make the act difficult despite the hare's reputation for fertility.

The restaurant in my small town had a Jackalope on display in the early 80's! That may be one of the best rounds I've seen! But im partial to the weird stuff...

Millions years ago before the last few Ice ages there were enormous herds of Jackalopes all over the Pangean super continent. They aggregated in groups, discovered fire, invented the wheel, evolved a common language and a civilization... they had a great leader named Silver Jack... I think I'm getting carried away here. 🐰

Always, with love 🤗🌺❤️🥕

You know....when we lived in Colorado.......the Jack Rabbits were so unbelievably huge and would change color with the landscape. Snow white with snow.......anyway, I'm almost sure I saw one of those things with antlers back then! I would have to go to work at 4 AM and it was pitch dark at that time of night, especially in the winter. Those creatures would run the road with you, just in front of your car! You couldn't pass them as they were unpredictable as to what way they would run! So you just drove slowly until they found a way out of the snowpack roadway. I'm almost certain there was one with the antlers.........😁

I would love to have that round! Thanks for sharing sis! Love ya much!🤗💜😘😍🌹💕🌟. !LADY !LUV

Douglas Herrick of Douglas

Surely a typo.... Right?😂😂😂

A Jackalope huh, I'm sure Douglas came up with that name, looking at the carcass with a can of beer on hand.
The best names comes from a can of beer😂

Good gravy, there's silver to commemorate absolutely everything...even the nonexistent! 😆 I love this one because I learned of the fearsome jackelope when I was pretty young. I even have a pic of my kid self somewhere "riding" a giant (fiberglass) jackelope...I think it was taken at Wall Drug or someplace similar.

Comparing this one to the other vintage rounds you have listed, this one is far more fun!
