A Sweet Wednesday!

I wasn't expecting this.

For those of you who know, I have planted a small portion of my backyard with squash and watermelon.

For a couple of days now, I kept looking at the watermelon fruit. It seemed ripe already. I've been debating whether it was time to pick it or not.

But the fruit was so small. It can't be ripe already. I could hold it in the palm of my hand. The vine itself was so small.

And so yesterday, I harvested the watermelon fruit.

I was delighted when I cut it up. It was dark red in color and almost over-ripe. It was so sweet!!!

You can't tell just by these photos because the slicing board I used was also small.

To give you a little perspective... this is the half of the watermelon in my standard-size dinner plate. 😲 Surprise, surprise!

It was a miniature watermelon, the size of a cantaloupe, with hardly any seeds in it. It's about 7 inches in diameter.

I didn't know it was a mini-watermelon. No wonder!!!

This plant is full of surprises. First, I thought that I planted it too late, because the vine is not growing. Then it developed a fruit, to my surprise. And to harvest a great fruit is a biggie by my book.

It was my first experience with miniature watermelon. I didn't realize that the seeds I bought were for a miniature watermelon.

A delightful mistake!

I'm glad you didn't wait for it to get bigger and lose it.

It looks so beautiful with it's deep red flesh.

I'm glad it turned out to be a good one.

I have never been a watermelon fan, but I do have to say, that does look tempting! I find watermelon to be flavorless. What was the taste of this one like? Very nice!🤗😘💖🌸 !LADY

I might have to try it. I just remember as a kid, I often wondered why anyone bothered with them; they didn't have much taste and you had to deal with all those seeds! Love ya back!🤗😘💞🌸

i have read about mini-watermelon's and I always wondered how they taste compared to the full size version..😇 Sounds like Liz needs to plant some of these next year @silversaver888, did it have the same amount of days to mature as a full size watermelon??

No, it was shorter! That is why I was wondering what was wrong. It's good I harvested it right away!
It was just about two months! I think that it will be an excellent plant for next year.
Here, I found this in the web

The vine is just 3 ft long and can be grown in a pot!

Haha! You got this I believe. Afterall, you'll still want to see what you plant blossom and yield fruit just like your watermelon did.

How juicy, red and delicious this watermelon looks, what a privilege to be able to plant one in your own backyard. It would make a fabulous fruit salad.

It never made it the fruit salad! This size was just enough for two dinners... fresh from the garden watermelon.
