History of Independence Day

The thirteen colonies under King George III started fighting the British in 1775 in an effort to gain their freedom. Congress secretly agreed to become independent of Great Britain on July 2, 1776. The final version of the Declaration of Independence was approved and published two days later, on July 4, 1776. The Declaration of Independence was read aloud for the first time in public on July 8, 1776, was first signed by delegates on August 2, 1776. John Adams wrote a letter to his wife Abigail on July 3, 1776, outlining the first details of the celebration of Independence Day. He spoke of "pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations"1 happening all over the country. But the term “Independence Day” was not used until 1791.

It's also important to remember that, before European settlers arrived, every tribe of Native Americans in the nation had its own nation and government.

Celebrating Independence Day

Independence Day is a patriotic holiday honoring the United States. People show support for their nation's history, culture, and people by attending public events.

On July 4, towns set off fireworks after dark, and houses and buildings fly the American flag outside. This day, which emphasizes the American spirit of political freedom, is spent with family enjoying picnics and barbecues. Parades and other major public celebrations are frequently planned on July 4th in big cities like New York and Washington, D.C.

Above all, Americans express gratitude and acknowledgement for the freedoms and rights that many of today's Americans battled for in their ancestors' lifetimes. One national landmark linked to Independence Day is the Statue of Liberty.

What a marvelous event!
