The country of Palau is located in the western Pacific Ocean 1,000 miles southeast of Manila, Philippines. The most recent United Nations estimates place its population at over 22,000, and it is an archipelago of over 500 islands covering a total area of just 179 square miles. Spain, Germany, Japan, and ultimately the United States were among the nations who owned, conquered, or ruled the nation starting in the 16th century. Following World War II, the nation became a part of the Pacific Islands Trust Territory. As a result of an agreement to a Compact of Free Association with the US, Palau attained complete sovereignty in 1994.

Palau has been producing gold, silver, and copper-nickel coins under contracts with several mints across the world since 1992. Numerous exquisite series have been released in the past few years. Beginning in 1992 and lasting until 2017, the first was the Marine Life Protection series. The design, which included a variety of sea creatures, changed with every year. The gold rectangular and bills and the gold dollars were the only issues that weren't colorized. Mermaids were depicted on the obverse of the copper-nickel and gold coins. Neptune was a part of certain designs. Mermaids, Neptune, or a mix of the two could be seen on the obverse of the gold $200 and silver $5 coins.

2013 Palau Gold $1 Mandarinfish

This is the first Marine Life Protection series, with each year the design changed, and featuring various types of sea life. The series ran from 1992 until 2017.

OBVERSE:
Every issue was colored, with the exception of the gold dollars and the rectangular $10 and $20 bills. On the obverse of the copper-nickel and gold dollars were pictures of mermaids; some designs featured Neptune, similar to the gold dollar issue from 2013. The $1 denomination is seen on the obverse.


REVERSE:
One of the sea's most vibrant species is shown on this.9999 pure gold coin. A common fish in saltwater tanks, the mandarinfish is a small, vividly colored member of the dragonet family.



The coin is packaged in its original capsule and arrived in a gorgeous wood box.

Synchiropus splendidus, the mandarinfish or mandarin dragonet, is a small, brightly colored member of the dragonet family, which is popular in the saltwater aquarium trade. The mandarinfish is native to the Pacific, ranging approximately from the Ryukyu Islands south to Australia.
